“I don’t have a daughter like her!” Zelda wiped her face, her voice bursting with anger. “From now on, Lisette, you’re my only daughter. I’ll never acknowledge her again!”

There was a glint of something sharp in her eyes, a finality that couldn’t be mistaken.

She was determined to sever all ties with Calliope. She had doubts from the beginning about having this daughter, and after all these years, Calliope had only let her down.

This time, Zelda’s fury was beyond measure. She made up her mind to announce at the birthday party that the Jewell family would cut off all relations with Calliope.

Zelda wanted the whole world to know she didn’t have such a daughter. Lisette was more than enough for her.

Calliope looked at Silas, surprised by his sudden appearance. She wondered how he even knew she was there. But then again, with his influence in Capitalton, there wasn’t much someone like Silas couldn’t find out.

Silas looked at her intently, his gaze a mix of warmth and concern. He ruffled her hair, a gesture filled with affection and worry. “Why did they come to see you?”

He had planned to surprise her but hadn’t expected to witness such a scene. Zelda and Valerian showing up at the diner to make a scene was beyond infuriating.

Calliope explained briefly, her eyes meeting Silas’s.

Zelda’s harsh words echoed in her mind–a mother and a brother condemning her, saying he’d regret marrying her. Truth be told, her reputation wasn’t great around here.

Yet, Silas stood by her.

“Did you believe what they said?” Calliope asked, her eyes searching his flawless face.

“Why would I?” Silas replied firmly. “I know exactly who you are, better than anyone else. Whether your reputation is good or bad, it doesn’t matter. You’re Mrs. Myers, my wife, my woman.”

“But… even my mother says I’m no good. Doesn’t it ever make you doubt or waver?” Calliope’s eyes glistened like stars in a dark sky.

“That’s because she’s not deserving,” Silas said softly. “Are you upset?”

Calliope shook her head. She hadn’t been, but how Silas treated her, compared to how they did, stirred something inside her.

“Even if the whole world turns its back on you, I’ll still be here.” Silas gently brushed her cheek. “You’re the best, the most beautiful and extraordinary to me. No one compares.”

“Really?” Calliope looked into his deep eyes, feeling like she was gazing into an abyss.

He was so sincere, so earnest, it was hard not to believe him.

“Really,” Silas affirmed. “My wife is the most amazing person in the world.”

Calliope’s lips curled into a smile. Whether his words were true or not, she chose to believe them.

“You haven’t told me why you came looking for me.”

“I wanted to give you a present,” Silas said with a hint of mystery. “It’s here now. Want to see it?”

“What kind of present?” Calliope asked, intrigued by Silas’s surprise visit to the diner.

“You’ll see. Do you have some time now?” Silas inquired, his eyes twinkling.
