Chapter 136

โ€œGideon, now that youโ€™ve brought her over, why donโ€™t you introduce her to everyone properly?โ€ Fleur said with a frown, turning to Verity. โ€œHonestly, Verity, I think youโ€™re being a bit harsh. When it comes to marriage, itโ€™s all about finding someone you truly love. Things like family background and looks arenโ€™t the most important. Itโ€™s the character, personality, and love you share that matter.โ€

โ€œFleur, you werenโ€™t singing the same tune when it came to Callie, were you? You even said Gideon should find someone with better credentials, a better family, better looks, higher educationโ€ฆ And now, this girl? How can you judge her character when you havenโ€™t even known her yet? She seems a bit immature to me, not to mention lacking in manners. She came to the boyfriendโ€™s house without bringing a single gift, and she didnโ€™t even bother to say hello. She just hid behind Gideon. Poor guy, heโ€™ll have to be both a husband and a babysitter! Donโ€™t get mad at me, Iโ€™m just an aunt who cares about Gideon, thatโ€™s all.โ€

Fleurโ€™s expression darkened instantly.

Silas gently placed a peeled grape into Calliopeโ€™s mouth, letting his fingers linger for a moment on her soft lips. He grinned slightly as Calliope leaned against him like a content kitten.

She had been quietly accepting Silasโ€™s attention, but now she finally looked up lazily and spoke, โ€œVerity, could you leave me out of this, please?โ€

Verity was shocked by Calliopeโ€™s unexpected response.

Silasโ€™s gaze turned icy as he looked at Verity.

Verity quickly forced a laugh, โ€œSorry, Callie, no offense meant. I didnโ€™t mean to compare you two. Thereโ€™s really no comparison.โ€ Then, she turned to Fleur, โ€œGideonโ€™s taste is just like yours, Fleur. Not exactly top-notch.โ€

โ€œVerity, havenโ€™t you said enough?โ€ Fleur was fuming, barely holding back from exploding.

Finally, Eamon, who had been silent, interrupted, โ€œOkay, weโ€™ve got guests today. Do you seriously want to make a scene and embarrass everyone?โ€

Verity stuck her tongue out at Eamon. โ€œSorry, Dad, you know me. I speak my mind with no ill intentions. Just stating the truth!โ€

โ€œHa, youโ€™re full of mischief, but you claim to have no ill intentions,โ€ Fleur scoffed.

โ€œCome on, Fleur, have I ever harmed you? If I had, would you still be sitting here all fine and dandy?โ€ Verity rolled her eyes.

โ€œEnough,โ€ Eamon said, glancing sternly at them before turning to Yvette. โ€œArenโ€™t you going to introduce yourself? Didnโ€™t your parents teach you to greet the elders?โ€

Eamonโ€™s words almost amused Calliope. She knew he wasnโ€™t fond of Yvette either, and was giving her a hard time to protect Calliope and settle some scores.

Yvette hadnโ€™t expected her visit to the Baker family to start off so rocky. She already felt out of place, looking like the entire world was against her.

But she mustered up her courage. She wasnโ€™t Mrs. Baker yet, and until then, she had to be compliant. Once she was married, sheโ€™d have her place in the Baker family and wouldnโ€™t have to endure this.

โ€œEamon, hello, Iโ€™m Yvette, Gideonโ€™s girlfriend.โ€

Yvette stepped forward, trying her best to greet everyone warmly, even addressing the younger ones like Calista and Dahlia Baker politely.

However, Calista and Dahlia ignored her, turning to chat with Calliope instead.

โ€œCallie, have you played the new game KING released?โ€ Calista asked eagerly, completely disregarding Yvetteโ€™s greeting.

Yvette felt humiliated, casting a dark look at Calliope.
