Chapter 166

Calliope glanced up at Zelda, a smirk playing on her lips. โ€œIโ€™m just wearing my own dress, Zelda. If she feels overshadowed, thatโ€™s not my problem. Why are you so worked up? If sheโ€™s better than me, a dress wonโ€™t change that, right?โ€ Her smile widened with a hint of mischief in her eyes. โ€œSo, by that logic, Lisette isnโ€™t all that impressive, right?โ€

โ€œYou!โ€ Zelda snapped, frustration in her voice. โ€œLisette is better than you in every way. Even if she doesnโ€™t dress as well, sheโ€™s still superior!โ€

โ€œOh really?โ€ Calliopeโ€™s smile turned icy. โ€œThen why are you worried? Afraid she might not measure up? What will you do if you find out sheโ€™s not as great as you think?โ€

Zeldaโ€™s face darkened. โ€œCalliope, you canโ€™t compare to Lisette. Youโ€™re nothing but trouble, a jinx. From the moment you were born, you nearly killed me, and youโ€™ve been a thorn in the Jewell familyโ€™s side ever since. How could you ever compare to Lisette? Sheโ€™s a blessing to us. Sheโ€™s talented and beautiful. Every time your brothers were in a pinch, she saved them! All you do is cause trouble. How could you ever measure up to her?โ€

โ€œIs that so? It was always her saving my brothers? Sheโ€™s so talented?โ€ Calliope regarded Zelda with a cold, detached gaze. It was her mother throwing these barbs, so it still stung.

Sheโ€™d always been good to them, but Lisette had taken credit for her efforts. Zelda didnโ€™t believe in her at all. Just because sheโ€™d had a difficult birth, she was branded as the familyโ€™s curse. It was laughable. What kind of mother would do that? Was it her fault she was born?

โ€œYes, Lisette outshines you in every way,โ€ Zelda insisted, her voice unyielding.

โ€œIf thatโ€™s true, why keep me around? Just make Lisette your only daughter.โ€ Calliopeโ€™s voice was calm as she crossed her arms, her eyes holding no trace of emotion. She stared at Zelda with a detached calm.

Zelda felt a flicker of unease under that steady gaze but pressed on. โ€œYes, with Lisette, thatโ€™s all we need!โ€

Calliopeโ€™s eyes darkened slightly. That was the last chance sheโ€™d give her. If Zelda didnโ€™t want it, so be it.

โ€œCallie!โ€

Portia and the others caught up with her then, frowning at Zelda.

Zelda cast a disdainful look at Calliope. โ€œNo matter how well you dress, youโ€™ll never match Lisette. Her talents, her everything, are beyond you.โ€ With that, she turned and left.

Calliope shrugged. โ€œLet her try.โ€

Portia shot a vexed glance at Zeldaโ€™s retreating figure. โ€œSheโ€™s so blind, canโ€™t see whoโ€™s good and whoโ€™s bad!โ€

Mavis said nothing but stepped forward, giving Calliopeโ€™s shoulder a gentle pat. โ€œDonโ€™t let it get to you.โ€

Archie glared after Zelda, his expression full of sympathy for Calliope.

Uriah, after a quick glance, asked, โ€œNeed me to do anything? If necessary, I can make sure this party doesnโ€™t happen.โ€

Calliope looked at Uriah in surprise. She suddenly realized Uriah might be there not just for Mavis, but possibly for Silas. Silas couldnโ€™t make it earlier because of other commitments, so maybe heโ€™d sent Uriah in his place. Those two were thick as thieves, so it was entirely possible. After all, she didnโ€™t know Uriah well enough for him to wreck someone elseโ€™s birthday party on her behalf.

When thinking of Silas, Calliopeโ€™s gaze softened. The disappointment and hurt from her familyโ€™s words didnโ€™t seem as sharp anymore.
