Chapter 167
Lisette was undoubtedly the eveningโs star, so even though Calliope made quite the entrance, Zelda quickly helped shift the spotlight back to Lisette.
Since it was Lisetteโs birthday party, naturally, there were plenty of people who had come bearing gifts.
Monty and Zelda stood by Lisetteโs side, helping her receive presents.
Calliope and her friends found a corner to sit in for a while. She watched Lisette from afar, a thoughtful look in her eyes.
Meanwhile, Portia and Archie were chattering away about something, and Mavis was off socializing with a group of people, led by Uriah.
While observing the scene, Calliope suddenly felt two shadows looming over her. She glanced up to see Valerian and Ulysses approaching, both looking rather displeased.
โWhat do you want?โ Calliope asked coolly, raising an eyebrow.
โDid you do it on purpose, giving Lisette that dress? You knew youโd outshine her,โ Ulysses accused angrily.
โI gave it to her, and sheโs not happy? Then she can give it back. I didnโt have to give it to her,โ Calliope replied nonchalantly. โItโs my dress. I can wear whatever I please. Why are you being so unreasonable?โ
โCalliope, youโre being difficult. Itโs Lisetteโs birthday. Why steal her thunder?โ Ulysses fumed.
โCalliope, youโre really overstepping. You celebrated your birthday yesterday. Do you really need to be the center of attention again today?โ Valerian added, clearly annoyed.
Upon overhearing that, Portia couldnโt hold back. She stood up in a huff.
โWhat, no one else can look good just because itโs Lisetteโs birthday? Oh, is that so? So, should everyone who looks better than Lisette go home?โ she shouted, drawing the roomโs attention.
Everyone began whispering amongst themselves, intrigued by the commotion.
โDonโt twist our words!โ Valerian snapped, getting more frustrated with Calliope by the second.
โIโm not twisting anything. Isnโt that exactly what you meant?โ Portia retorted defiantly.
โWeโre talking about Calliope, not everyone else!โ Ulysses interjected, exasperated.
โOh, itโs about Callie? Why? Is Lisette so insecure that sheโs afraid Callie will outshine her?โ Portia continued loudly. โItโs not like Callieโs trying to steal the show. Even in a potato sack, sheโd outshine Lisette. Itโs not Callieโs fault that Lisette doesnโt have the same presence.โ
People around them couldnโt help but nod in agreement. Instinctively, they glanced between Calliope and Lisette, comparing the two.
Those who had attended past birthday parties couldnโt help but remember how Calliope had always been understated yet striking. Even in less fitting and glamorous attire, she had an inner beauty that fancy clothes couldnโt overshadow.
Tonight, Calliope had truly captivated everyone, reminding them of her unique charm. Even when she stayed under the radar, her presence was unforgettable.
