Chapter 189
The crowd whispered, yet no one dared to step in and help.
A few people in the group recognized Calliope and began to murmur.
โIsnโt that the heiress of the Jewell family? It looks like sheโs being scammed!โ
โThatโs rough. Could this couple be doing it on purpose? They must be trying to scam her!โ
โBy the way, I saw Ms. Lisette with the three Jewell brothers here earlier. They seemed to be just watching the show.โ
With a glance toward Lisette and her brothers, the onlookers confirmed their presence and felt less inclined to intervene. No one wanted to cross the Jewell family. If they werenโt stepping in, why should anyone else?
Portia, however, found the situation amusingly absurd.
โCall the cops? You two must be con artists! Callie tried to help you, and now you want to report her? You deserve whatever misery youโre in. Donโt go too far, lady. Be honest, did Callie do anything to you?โ
Calliope observed the pair calmly. She hadnโt expected her attempt to help would get twisted like this. She scrutinized the woman, curiosity in her eyes.
She wasnโt worried about the police being called. After all, she had only kicked the man lightly, enough to make a scene but not to cause harm.
The woman glanced at her husband and then at Calliope, launching into a tirade.
โIt was you! You hit me and my husband! My husband is hurt, and you owe us money!โ
โListen, you hag, Iโll give you a chance. Pay us thirty grand, and weโll let this slide without calling the cops!โ the man threatened.
Calliope smirked, โThirty grand? Thatโs all?โ
โOh, so youโre loaded, huh? How much are you willing to pay?โ The man sneered, thinking Calliope was a fool.
He was bluffing, assuming the crowd wouldnโt get involved. Heโd pulled this stunt many times before.
โAt least a million, right? Anything less, and youโre not thinking big enough for a scam!โ Calliope mused, resting her chin on her hand.
The manโs eyes gleamed, โSeriously? You can pay a million?โ
โOf course, a million in Monopoly money. I can have someone bring it to you now,โ Calliope replied with a sly grin.
โWhat did you say?โ The man questioned, unsure if he heard correctly.
โA million in Monopoly money,โ Calliope retorted, her eyes glinting with disdain.
โYou witch, you think you can fool me?โ The manโs earlier smugness evaporated into anger, and he lunged at Calliope.
Portia burst into laughter, and the crowd, initially confused, joined in.
โA million in Monopoly money, brilliant!โ
โThis Ms. Jewell is quite something!โ
โSheโs got guts, not scared at all.โ
โBut if this man and woman keep pushing her, she might be in over her head,โ someone remarked, their gaze drifting toward Ulysses and his brothers, who watched the scene unfold, frowning but silent.
After a moment, Lisette said, โCallie might make him angrier. She shouldnโt have done that!โ
