Chapter 225
Lisette pushed Horatioโs wheelchair over to where Valerian was standing.
โValerian, how did Callie get in there?โ
Confusion was etched on her face. What was Calliopeโs deal with Upton? She couldnโt actually be here for Upton, Lisette assumed.
โThey said sheโs Uptonโs guest,โ Horatio replied, still trying to wrap his head around it.
Calliope, a guest of Upton? How?
Someone like Upton wasnโt exactly the kind of person Calliope would have access to. Unlessโฆ was this somehow connected to Silas? It wasnโt impossible.
โDoes that mean we canโt go in?โ Lisette asked, frowning.
โLetโs wait a bit,โ Valerian said. โMr. Thorne will have to come out sooner or later. When he does, weโll get a chance to talk to him.โ
Lisette nodded. โThat makes sense. Donโt worry, Horatio, Mr. Thorne must know where the Miracle Doctor is. If he came here, that probably means sheโs in Capitalton. Your legs will be alright!โ
โOkay,โ Horatio gave a small nod.
Meanwhile, inside the hospital room, as soon as Calliope stepped in, Baber came barreling toward her.
โMommy! Youโre finally here! I missed you so much!โ
โBaber, look at you! Youโve gotten even bigger! And still as adorable as ever.โ
She tousled his hair and scooped him up into her arms.
At only four years old, Baber was the definition of cuteโrosy cheeks, and a face that looked like a mini version of Uptonโs. But unlike Uptonโs cold and distant demeanor, Baber was all warmth and sunshine.
โThatโs just because you havenโt seen me in a long time, so you think Iโm taller!โ Baber huffed, puffing out his little cheeks in mock annoyance. โYou didnโt miss me at all, did you?โ
โOf course I did!โ Calliope tweaked his nose playfully. โIโve just been busy, and Iโve also been looking for a way to help you get better.โ
โReally?โ Baber tilted his head.
โYeah.โ She set him down and walked over to the couch, her gaze landing on Upton, who had just finished leaving a voice message. He lowered his phone and met her eyes.
โYou came. I know you werenโt thrilled about using your medical skills anymore all these years, but the doctors canโt do anything for Baber. Thatโs why I brought him to you.โ
Upton, his features strikingly charming yet cold, uttered as he gazed at Calliope, โYou once told me that if things got serious for Baber, I could come to you for help.โ
โI know.โ Calliope nodded. โThatโs why I came as soon as I heard you were here.โ
She didnโt waste any more time. She sat Baber down and took his wrist, checking his pulse.
โAlright, let me see your tongue.โ
Baber obediently stuck it out.
โHis pulse is weak. His condition has gotten worse,โ Calliope stated. โIโve been studying some old medical texts over the years. Thereโs a treatment that might work, but itโs risky.โ
Upton asked, โA permanent solution?โ
โIf it succeeds, yes. But if it fails, the best-case scenario is that heโll be left with a disability. The worst is he might not survive,โ Calliope replied.
Upton raised his gaze. โYou told me beforeโif we donโt try, he wonโt live past seven.โ
Calliope answered, โThatโs still true.โ
โHow certain are you?โ
โEighty percent,โ Calliope said after a moment of consideration.
Upton turned to Baber. โBaber, you heard what Calliope said. What do you want to do?โ
โIโve already lived longer than expected. I want to trust Mommy. I want to try.โ
Baber rested his chin on his hands as he looked at Calliope. โMommy, donโt feel stressed, okay? I want to give it a try. Even if something happens to me, itโs not your fault.โ
