Chapter 242

Calliope was at a loss.

โ€œWhat are you talking about? Iโ€™m not blind, okay? And sure, I listen to my mommy, but that doesnโ€™t mean I just make things up! It is what it is!โ€

Baber huffed, โ€œThat woman was trying to hurt me! Daddy, you have to punish her!โ€

Upton nodded, turning toward the door. He glanced at Valerian. โ€œDo you think my son is an idiot? He doesnโ€™t even know who heโ€™s looking at?โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s just a kid,โ€ Horatio interjected, frowning. โ€œItโ€™s not surprising if he made a mistake.โ€

โ€œIs that so?โ€ Uptonโ€™s gaze drifted to Lisette. โ€œWhat about you? Are you really saying you didnโ€™t take my son?โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t!โ€ Lisette stammered, feeling a cold dread settle in her stomach under Uptonโ€™s piercing stare.

โ€œYou didnโ€™t?โ€ Upton chuckled darkly. โ€œBecause your people already admitted it. You still want to lie? Fine. Letโ€™s go confront them.โ€

Fagan led the way as the group moved to another empty hospital room. Inside, two men were tied up, guards keeping a close watch on them.

As soon as they saw Fagan and the others enter, their faces turned pale.

โ€œWe didnโ€™t mean to! That woman made us do it!โ€

โ€œIt was Lisette! She paid us to take the kid!โ€

โ€œWe had no idea who he was! We were just following orders!โ€

โ€œPlease, let us go!โ€

โ€œMr. Myers, weโ€™re sorry!โ€

The two men spilled everythingโ€“offering bank transfers, call logs, whatever proof they had. It was all Lisetteโ€™s doing.

Lisetteโ€™s breath caught in her throat. She hadnโ€™t expected them to break so easily. Panic surged through her as she realized she was exposed.

โ€œMr. Thorne, Iโ€™m sorryโ€ฆ Yes, I took Baber, but I wasnโ€™t going to hurt him! I just wanted to scare Calliope! Thatโ€™s all! And Baberโ€™s fine, isnโ€™t he? I apologize!โ€

โ€œSo, you admit it?โ€ Uptonโ€™s lips curled into a smirk. He took a step forward, then, without warning, kicked her.

Lisetteโ€™s body crumpled to the floor. She clutched her stomach, pain radiating through her ribs.

โ€œMr. Thorneโ€ฆ Iโ€™m sorry, I really am! But I never meant to hurt Baber! I just wanted to scare Calliope! If you want to blame someone, blame her! If it werenโ€™t for Calliope, I wouldnโ€™t have done this!โ€

Lisette lifted her face, feeling a pang of agony.

โ€œItโ€™s her fault! She didnโ€™t watch Baber properly! Even if I hadnโ€™t taken him, someone else could have!โ€

โ€œOh? So I should be grateful to you? For proving Callie isnโ€™t capable of protecting Baber?โ€

Lisetteโ€™s eyes lit up with hope. โ€œYes! I was helping you!โ€

Upton crouched down in front of her, his expression cold and unforgiving.

โ€œCallie is like a sister to me. You really think Iโ€™d blame her? You underestimate how much she means to me.โ€

His lips curled into a cruel smile. โ€œAnd if I did want to test her, it sure as hell wouldnโ€™t be you doing it. You dared to touch my son and tried to hurt Callie. You went after the two people I care about most.โ€

His hand shot out, wrapping around Lisetteโ€™s throat. Then his fingers tightened ever so slightly, his face a picture of devilish allure. โ€œYou want to die?โ€

Lisette choked, unable to speak, her gaze, imbued with despair, met Uptonโ€™s. She was staring into the eyes of a monster. Sheer dread filled her heart; she was going to die.

โ€œLet her go!โ€
