Chapter 247
Wincing in pain, Lisette turned on Baber angrily, spat through gritted teeth, โYou little brat!โ
Baber, however, was unfazed. He pressed firmly on her injured arm, his childish voice carrying an unexpectedly authoritative tone. โThatโs what you get for hurting Callie! Go on. Try it again! I dare you!โ
โLet go of me, you little monster!โ Lisette cried out, sweat beading on her forehead as the pain intensified. She gasped sharply, tears and snot mixing as she struggled to break free. But with one of the bodyguards restraining her other arm, she was completely trapped.
By then, the commotion had drawn the nursesโ attention, who hurried over.
Baber glanced at his bodyguard, a silent command passing between them.
Catching on immediately, the bodyguard released Lisetteโs wrist. Her grip on the glass tumbler loosened involuntarily, and the cup slipped from her grasp.
Baber darted out of the way just in time. The glass hit the metal bed railing with a sharp crack, shattering into dozens of pieces.
Without missing a beat, Baber let out a loud, gut-wrenching wail and crouched down, clutching his tiny hands to his chest.
โWaah! I just wanted to ask why you kidnapped me, and you, you tried to kill me!โ He sobbed dramatically, his little body shaking.
The timing was impeccable. As the nurses rushed in, they saw a little, helpless child curled up on the floor, weeping uncontrollably.
Meanwhile, Lisette was left panting, her face streaked with tears. But unlike Baber, she still had shards of broken glass clutched in her trembling fingers.
The nursesโ expressions hardened as they turned toward her.
โMs. Jewell,โ one of them said, voice laced with disapproval. โBaber wanted to ask you a question. How could you attempt to harm a child?โ
The bodyguard, ever the loyal accomplice, stepped in with a look of righteous indignation. โHeโs just a kid. He was scared and confused! He wanted answers! And youโyou tried to hurt him!โ
โYou can be cold-hearted,โ he continued, shaking his head, โbut this? It is downright evil.โ
Lisetteโs eyes were bloodshot as she stared in disbelief at the unfolding scene. These twoโthis absurd little duoโpainted her as the villain!
โAre you kidding me?โ she snapped, pointing a trembling finger at Baber. โHeโs the one hurting me!โ
Baber blinked up at her with wide, tear-filled eyes. โMe? A helpless kid? You think I could hurt you?โ His lower lip trembled. โWow, I must be strong then. Tell me, Ms. Jewell, exactly how did I hurt you?โ
His tiny frame, his sweet, cherubic voiceโyet somehow, every word carried an edge, a sharpness that made him all the more infuriating.
One of the nurses clutched her chest, looking at him with pure sympathy. โOh, sweetheart, how could anyone accuse you of something so awful?โ
โYeah,โ another whispered. โGrown woman picking on a kid. Disgusting.โ
A murmur rippled through the small crowd gathering at the doorway.
โSeriously, bullying a child? Have some shame!โ
Lisette was seething. โYou deliberately pressed on my injured arm! You knew what you were doing!โ
Baber sniffled, his little nose scrunching up as he wiped his eyes. โSo, youโre saying I, a tiny, defenseless boy, intentionally hurt you? Or maybeโฆโ
He paused, his voice growing softer, sadder. โMaybe you hurt yourself so you could blame me? I know you want to bully me because I have no mommy.โ
Lisetteโs breath hitched.
โThatโs not what I said!โ she shouted, feeling the weight of the judging stares around her.
Baber lowered his gaze, his voice trembling. โItโs okay. You donโt have to admit it. No one would believe me anyway.โ
He took a deep breath as if steeling himself, then turned to the bodyguard. โLetโs go. I shouldnโt have bothered her. I must be so annoying. Thatโs why she hates me. Thatโs why I donโt have a mommy.โ
His last words were barely a whisper, but they struck like a hammer to the hearts of everyone present.
A collective gasp rippled through the room. One of the nurses even wiped at her eyes.
โPoor thing,โ someone murmured.
Still sitting there with the broken glass in her hand, Lisette could only gape at the absurdity of it all. โThis ratโฆ. This devilish little actorโฆโ
He had just turned the entire damn hospital against her.
