Chapter 267

Calliope glanced at Yara, giving her a nod. โ€œSure, letโ€™s do it.โ€

Uriah leaned closer to Calliope, whispering, โ€œDo you even know how to play cards? Do you want me to step in for you? Yaraโ€™s got connections to some big-time players, like a real poker king.โ€

โ€œA poker king, huh?โ€ Calliope mused. โ€œIโ€™ve crossed paths with a few big names over at the Neon Casino myself.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ve been to Neon Casino?โ€ Uriah was shocked. He always pictured Calliope as this innocent lamb, but she was turning out to be anything but that. She could smoke, down whiskey like it was water, and despite all the drinks, not a hint of drunkenness. She could play the banjo like she was ready for Carnegie Hall, and sheโ€™d beaten Ronin at chess.

No one could be good at everything. Calliope couldnโ€™t be a card shark, too, could she? Uriah felt a whirl of mixed emotions and couldnโ€™t help but text Silas.

[Silas, be honest. Is there anything your wife canโ€™t do?]

Silas: [Not much, really.]

Uriah: [Come on. Everyone has their limits. She canโ€™t be some kind of prodigy at everything, right?]

Silas: [Well, surprise, she kind of is.]

Uriah was at a loss for words.

Calliope and her entourage followed Yara to the card room. Yaraโ€™s card room was indeed huge, accommodating several tables. She chose the one in the center.

She looked at Calliope. โ€œWhat game do you play?โ€

โ€œAnythingโ€™s fine,โ€ Calliope replied indifferently.

โ€œAre you sure? You can pick what youโ€™re good at. And Iโ€™ll pick my favorite if youโ€™re up for anything.โ€ Yara raised an eyebrow as Calliope calmly pulled out a chair and sat down.

โ€œSeriously, anything works. Whatever you enjoy,โ€ Calliope said casually. โ€œItโ€™s all the same to me.โ€

โ€œAlright, then Iโ€™ll go with my favorite.โ€ Yara named a game and looked at Calliope. โ€œBut hey, we canโ€™t just play for fun, right? How about we spice things up with some stakes? It makes it more thrilling. Donโ€™t you think so?โ€

โ€œSure thing,โ€ Calliope smirked. โ€œMoney?โ€

โ€œMoney? That seems dull, not exciting,โ€ Yara pondered, glancing at Calliope. โ€œIโ€™ve noticed that bracelet youโ€™re wearing looks pretty valuable. How about that?โ€

โ€œSure,โ€ Calliope said, glancing at her wrist.

The bracelet, worth a fortune, was slipped off and placed on the table.

โ€œAnyone who knows their stuff would recognize this bracelet is worth a small fortune.โ€ She looked up at Yara. โ€œSo, Ms. Xander, what do you have to put on the line?โ€

Yara considered her options.

Calliope continued, โ€œI noticed earlier, Ms. Xander, you have a painting on your wall. Itโ€™s quite intriguing and seems to be on par with my bracelet in terms of value. How about we bet on that?โ€

โ€œYou think youโ€™re going to win?โ€ Yara was surprised by Calliopeโ€™s confidence.

โ€œPretty sure,โ€ Calliope toyed with her bracelet, her gaze casual but with certainty that suggested victory was already hers.

Uriah was starting to worry. Calliopeโ€™s bracelet looked incredibly valuable, though he had no idea where it came from. But Yara was serious about her wagers. If Calliope put something up as a bet, losing meant it was gone.

Not even Silas could smooth things over if Calliope lost.
