Chapter 274

โ€œShe beat Ronin in chess?โ€ Horatio couldnโ€™t believe his ears.

They would sometimes play with Lisette, but theyโ€™d never thought of inviting Calliope to join their games of chess, poker, or bridge. Theyโ€™d always assumed she wasnโ€™t interested, or worse, that she couldnโ€™t play.

But it turned out Calliope was quite the dark horse, and she knew her way around a deck of cards too. During Thanksgiving or those lazy Sunday afternoons when everyone gathered for games, no one ever thought to invite her. They figured she wasnโ€™t the sociable type.

They were wrong.

โ€œShe must have gotten lucky,โ€ Valerian muttered, grasping for a reason.

It was the only explanation he could come up with. How else could she have beaten Yara so easily?

The three brothers clicked into the livestream, unable to resist witnessing this.

The stream was already buzzing with viewers, all talking about how impressive Calliope was and questioning why the Jewell family seemed to overlook such talent.

The brothers felt a sting of embarrassment. It was like the universe was rubbing their noses in it.

โ€œShe was never this skilled before, was she?โ€ Ulysses said, his face turning shades of disbelief. โ€œEven if she won those games, sheโ€™s biting off more than she can chew with this alligator pit stunt!โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s just asking for trouble,โ€ Valerian grumbled, furrowing his brow. โ€œWe wonโ€™t rescue her if she gets hurt!โ€

As the brothers debated, Yara opened the gate to the alligator pit.

โ€œAre you sure you want to do this?โ€ Yara asked. โ€œYou can still back out.โ€

โ€œAbsolutely,โ€ Calliope replied confidently, stepping onto the stairs leading down.

Yara shut the heavy iron gate behind her.

A crowd gathered around the pit with their eyes glued to Calliope.

โ€œDonโ€™t go down there!โ€ someone shouted.

โ€œYeah. Just stay on the steps. Yara didnโ€™t say you had to reach the pit edge!โ€

โ€œExactly. Those alligators might come out if you get too close. Theyโ€™re already looking restless.โ€

โ€œIt is nerveโ€“racking just to watch from here!โ€

โ€œCalliopeโ€™s got guts, thatโ€™s for sure!โ€

โ€œDo you think sheโ€™ll get hurt?โ€

โ€œFifteen minutes, and hold on. Itโ€™s not long, but itโ€™ll feel like an eternity.โ€

The crowd was a mix of concern, fear, and a hint of morbid curiosity.

Standing beside Yara, Uriah couldnโ€™t help but question her, โ€œIsnโ€™t this a bit too much for a young girl? Sheโ€™s unlike you, tearing alligators apart with your bare hands!โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s not worthy of Silas if she canโ€™t handle this,โ€ Yara said matterโ€“ofโ€“factly. โ€œRelax. She wonโ€™t die. Worst case, she might leave with a few scratches or a missing limb.โ€

Uriah winced. โ€œA missing limb?โ€

โ€œLook out. One of the alligators is coming up!โ€

โ€œThat thing is huge!โ€

โ€œYeah, it looks starving. Yara, how many alligators are in there? And when was the last time they were fed?โ€

โ€œOh, just fifty or sixty. They havenโ€™t eaten in about two weeks,โ€ Yara replied casually.

The crowd exchanged wideโ€“eyed glances. Yara was a piece of work.

In the livestream, the Jewell brothers watched on, skeptical of Calliopeโ€™s chances.

Valerian shook his head. โ€œSheโ€™s trying to steal the spotlight, but sheโ€™s gonna get herself killed doing it.โ€

Ulysses nodded in agreement. โ€œSheโ€™s nothing like Lisette, whoโ€™s always so levelโ€“headed and thinks things through.โ€
