Chapter 275
All the guests at the banquet couldnโt help but feel that Calliope was taking a critical risk. Everyone was holding their breath for her, especially since Yara had mentioned sheโd ensure Calliopeโs safety, but she couldnโt promise she wouldnโt get hurt.
โThatโs terrifying! Those alligators look vicious!โ
โYeah. Iโve read the news about alligators attacking and even eating people. Their death roll is no joke!โ
โSheโs standing on the edge now. If something goes wrong, she can still get out in time. But if she goes further down those steps, sheโs just asking for trouble!โ
โDonโt go down there! Iโm scared just watching!โ
โSeriously, my palms are sweating!โ
Someone was streaming the whole thing live, and viewers were tuning in by the hundreds. The hashtag #CalliopeDaresTheGatorPit was already trending.
Uriah was standing nearby, also on edge, contemplating whether he should ask Silas to say something to Calliope. But Silas seemed surprisingly unfazed by his wifeโs predicament. When Uriah asked, Silas only told him to wait and see.
โCallie better not be in danger.โ Uriah glanced at Yara and added, โNot only should she be safe, but she shouldnโt get so much as a scratch! Hey, Yara, are you listening? If anything happens to her, youโll have to answer to me.โ
โYou fancy her?โ Yara asked, lighting a cigarette as a mischievous smile played on her lips.
โWho said I fancy her?โ Uriah rolled his eyes. โSheโs Mavisโs best friend. Mavis will never forgive me if anything happens to her!โ
โOh, you care about Mavis, huh?โ
โSheโs like my own. I found her when she was just a kid!โ
Uriah huffed, signaling with his hand. He had taken Mavis under his wing when she was three, raising her like a daughter despite their small age difference. He played both mom and dad, teaching her everything he knew. Though she feared him, he was powerless against her. After all these years, how could he not be attached?
โYeah, everyone in Capitalton knows about you and Mavis.โ Yara raised an eyebrow. โBut are you that afraid of her? Iโve heard some amusing stories about you two lately.โ
โIf you know I donโt want to hear it, then zip it.โ Uriahโs voice was icy, his handsome face tinged with coldness.
Yara shrugged, grinning. โYour stories are entertaining. Donโt worry, I wonโt spill the beans. I quite like Mavis too. Itโs no wonder you have a crush on her.โ
โI donโt have a crush on her.โ Uriah frowned.
โNo crush?โ Yara nodded. โThen whyโd you raise her and teach her everything you know?โ
โShut up.โ
Yara shrugged again, taking a drag from her cigarette as she turned her gaze back to Calliope.
In the alligator pit, Calliope had reached the last few steps. She didnโt go further down. Instead, she stood there, watching the gators floating with their eyes just above the water. The evening lights werenโt very bright, and the water was a dark, inky black. People would miss the alligatorsโ eyes if they didnโt look closely. Once they did, they would find them glaringly apparent. The surface of the water was dotted with the gatorsโ glowing eyes and their rough, scaly skin.
