Chapter 379
โWhat do you mean, from the beginning?โ Calliope asked, her voice tinged with confusion.
โWhen did you start fancying Silas?โ Gideon sneered, crossing his arms. โWas it when you were still with me? Were you already into him then? Did both of you use me as a stepping stone?โ
The more Gideon thought about it, the angrier he got. He clutched his chest dramatically. โSo, Iโm the only fool here?โ
โWho said you were a stepping stone, Gideon? Are you out of your mind? Isnโt everything thatโs happening today because of your own choices? Are you really going to blame others?โ Calliope looked at Gideon, utterly exasperated.
He was spiraling, blaming everyone else for his own mess.
But honestly, she had to thank him. Without him, she wouldnโt have realized how great Silas was. Silas was handsome, wealthy, and so much kinder than Gideon. โYouโre saying this is my fault? No way! You two planned this from the start, didnโt you?
โCalliope, stop playing dumb. You started getting close to Silas right when you first came to my family estate, didnโt you? He only showed up at the estate when he knew youโd be thereโฆ You two had plenty of private conversations. Are you saying nothing was going on?โ
Gideon was devastated. He had thought he was the one who had cast aside Calliope, but now he realized it was the other way around. He was just a stepping stone for her! Calliope paused, replaying past events in her mind.
She often went to the Baker estate because of Gideon. She hadnโt thought much of it before, but now that Gideon mentioned it, she realized she always ran into Silas there. At the time, she didnโt think Silas was approachable. Instead, she found him intimidating. Maybe it was because everyone in the Baker family seemed to fear him, so she was wary of him too, even though Silas had never done anything to harm her.
Thinking back, Silas did have a few private conversations with her, but they werenโt anything suspicious. He seemed to just be giving her advice.
He warned her about Fleur, who always made her do chores. He told her she didnโt need to bend over backward to please Fleur. He said it only lowered her worth and made Fleur dislike her more.
At the time, she was angry, suspecting Silas of trying to sabotage her relationship with Gideon. She thought Silas didnโt like her. So, her impression of Silas had been less than favorable.
But when looking back, it seemed Silas genuinely wanted to help her.
Calliope couldnโt help but chuckle at the realization. She had misjudged Silas. From the start, he had been looking out for her. A warm feeling washed over her as she thought about it.
She glanced down at Gideon, sprawled on the floor. โGideon, I actually owe you thanks. Without you, I wouldnโt have realized how great Silas is. I wouldnโt have such a wonderful husband!โ
Gideon looked up, his face twitching with emotion. As he opened his mouth to speak, Calliope called out, โFleur?โ
Fleur and Yvette had been standing nearby, unnoticed until now.
Yvetteโs cheeks were flushed red. There was a clear handprint across her face. Probably, Fleur had slapped her.
Yvetteโs eyes were wet with unshed tears, glaring daggers at Gideon.
โMom?!โ
Gideon scrambled to his feet, panic overtaking him.
