Chapter 391
โWell, originally Mr. Myers had sifted through the Baker family, and after much deliberation, he finally settled on Gideon,โ Damien remarked, taking a sip of his coffee.
Back then, Mr. Myers had high hopes for Gideon. The Baker family wasnโt exactly brimming with talent; most members of Mr. Myers' generation didnโt quite cut it. The younger ones were either too young or not quite up to the task.
โGideon seemed to be the best of the bunch,โ Damien continued, glancing at Calliope out of the corner of his eye.
โIs there something you want to say?โ Calliope asked, sensing there was more on his mind.
โWell, there seemed to be another reason Mr. Myers chose Gideon,โ Damien recalled.
โWhat reason?โ Calliope asked, intrigued. โWhat made him think Gideon was a good pick?โ
Honestly, she once thought Gideon was promising too. But the more time she spent with him, the more she realized he wasnโt all that. Love had blinded her at first, but now she saw things clearlyโGideon wasnโt much to write home about.
He was often a complainer, and many times she found herself sorting out his messes. Thinking about it now gave her an overwhelming sense of frustration.
โIt seemed Mr. Myers had you in mind,โ Damien said after a moment of thought. โHe wasnโt particularly impressed with Gideon, but he seemed to want to give him a chance because of you.โ
โBut Gideon never seemed to believe Mr. Myers intended to mentor him,โ Damien added. โHe was given plenty of opportunities, but he never seized them.โ
Even as an outsider, Damien found it frustrating to watch. If he had been given such chances, heโd have clung to them for dear life. But Gideon, like a fool, let them slip by, choosing to wallow in self-pity instead.
Calliope gave Damien a surprised look. โFor me?โ
โThatโs my guess,โ Damien clarified. โMr. Myers never explicitly said so, but I remember him mentioning that if Gideon were to take over the Baker family, your position would improve as well.โ
โIt seemed he always wanted you to have a better life,โ Damien said, looking at Calliope. He suspected Mr. Myers had long been fond of her, but given her relationship with his nephew, he couldnโt exactly make a move.
Calliope chuckled softly. She doubted it was true. It was no secret that Silas had someone else in his heart.
โYou donโt believe me, do you?โ Damien frowned.
โItโs not that,โ she replied.
โYes, it is. You can ask Mr. Myers yourself. I think Iโm right about this!โ Damien insisted with conviction.
โAlright,โ Calliope said with a smile, standing up after finishing her meal.
โAre you heading out, maโam?โ Damien asked.
โYes,โ Calliope nodded. โI have a few people to meet today. Oh, and Damien, could you take care of Million for me?โ
โWhere should I take him?โ Damien inquired.
โTo the old Baker estate. Let Million keep Eamon company for a few days. If you have time, join them for a game of chess.โ
Calliope knew Silas often had Damien play chess with Eamon. They got along well, and Million played chess too. It would be entertaining.
โAnd what about you? Should someone accompany you?โ Damien asked. โMr. Myers instructed us to look after you, to stay close by because heโs worried about your safety.โ
Calliope chuckled at Damienโs earnestness.
โEven though we might not be much help if thereโs trouble, and you can probably handle yourself just fineโฆ having someone with you is better. We can carry your bags when you shop, and drive you wherever you need to goโฆโ
