Chapter 97
โWho got on your nerves today?โ Uriah asked, lounging casually on the corner of Silasโs desk, a steaming mug of coffee in hand. โCome on, Mr. Myers, who would dare upset the great you?โ he teased, grinning.
Silas shot him a glance, not in the mood for banter.
โWas it Calliope who ticked you off?โ Uriahโs eyes sparkled with mischief, enjoying the situation too much. โI told you that sheโs not into you. Even if you do the noble thing and marry her, she wonโt thank you for this. Youโre just asking for trouble!โ
โWhy donโt you get lost and stop bothering me?โ Silas retorted, giving Uriah a light kick.
Uriah brushed off his pants, unruffled. โIโm just trying to help. Maybe if you spill the beans, I can offer some advice?โ
Silas looked up at Uriah, words hanging on the tip of his tongue, but ultimately, he shook his head. โYou havenโt even had your first kiss yet. What advice could you give me?โ
โWow, that stings, man!โ Uriah feigned hurt. โWords like arrows, huh?โ
Silas chuckled softly. โYou werenโt being nice, either.โ
โIโm just speaking the truth. Mavis told me Calliopeโs got her heart set on Gideon, your nephew. Marrying you might be her way of acting out. Women are stubborn creatures when it comes to love. Sheโs been after Gideon for years. Why would she give up so easily? And even if she claims to have moved on, thereโs always that lingering bitterness.โ
โLoveโs a cruel beast, you know. Thatโs why Iโm smarter than you. I donโt fall for any woman. Theyโre more trouble than theyโre worth!โ Uriah said smugly, โI steer clear of drama.โ
Silas smirked, โMavis is a woman.โ
โSheโs different. Sheโs my apprentice,โ Uriah clarified. โItโs purely a mentorโstudent relationship.โ
โOh, mentorโstudent, huh? Does Mavis see it that way, too?โ
โOf course,โ Uriah replied confidently. โWeโre as innocent as they come. Donโt get any funny ideas.โ
โSure.โ Silas leaned back, a sly smile on his lips. โBut what if Mavisโs feelings arenโt so innocent? What if she confessed that she liked you?โ
Uriah frowned. โThat would never happen.โ
โBut if it did?โ
โThen Iโd nip that nonsense in the bud.โ
โYou wouldnโt fall for Mavis?โ Silas asked, clearly entertained by the conversation.
โNot a chance,โ Uriah said sternly. โI donโt need the hassle of romance. Women become complications, and I donโt need any vulnerabilities. You know the life I lead, so no, never.โ
With that, Uriah hopped off the desk.
โEnough about me. Letโs focus on your predicament. Sheโs already your wife. Got any plans to win her over?โ
โAny suggestions?โ Silas asked, deep in thought.
โFlowers?โ Uriah offered somewhat sheepishly.
Silas gave him a long, penetrating look. โWhy am I even asking you, Mr. No Experience? Get out of here!โ
โHey, Iโm just trying to help! You heartless jerk,โ Uriah laughed, waving off Silasโs dismissal as he headed out.
With Uriah gone, Wynton entered to discuss business with Silas.
Silasโs intense gaze lingered on him for a moment too long.
โMr. Myers, is there something on your mind?โ Wynton asked, nervously scratching his head. Silasโs look made him uneasy, despite having checked the calendar to ensure today was supposedly a lucky day.
