Chapter 97

โ€œWho got on your nerves today?โ€ Uriah asked, lounging casually on the corner of Silasโ€™s desk, a steaming mug of coffee in hand. โ€œCome on, Mr. Myers, who would dare upset the great you?โ€ he teased, grinning.

Silas shot him a glance, not in the mood for banter.

โ€œWas it Calliope who ticked you off?โ€ Uriahโ€™s eyes sparkled with mischief, enjoying the situation too much. โ€œI told you that sheโ€™s not into you. Even if you do the noble thing and marry her, she wonโ€™t thank you for this. Youโ€™re just asking for trouble!โ€

โ€œWhy donโ€™t you get lost and stop bothering me?โ€ Silas retorted, giving Uriah a light kick.

Uriah brushed off his pants, unruffled. โ€œIโ€™m just trying to help. Maybe if you spill the beans, I can offer some advice?โ€

Silas looked up at Uriah, words hanging on the tip of his tongue, but ultimately, he shook his head. โ€œYou havenโ€™t even had your first kiss yet. What advice could you give me?โ€

โ€œWow, that stings, man!โ€ Uriah feigned hurt. โ€œWords like arrows, huh?โ€

Silas chuckled softly. โ€œYou werenโ€™t being nice, either.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m just speaking the truth. Mavis told me Calliopeโ€™s got her heart set on Gideon, your nephew. Marrying you might be her way of acting out. Women are stubborn creatures when it comes to love. Sheโ€™s been after Gideon for years. Why would she give up so easily? And even if she claims to have moved on, thereโ€™s always that lingering bitterness.โ€

โ€œLoveโ€™s a cruel beast, you know. Thatโ€™s why Iโ€™m smarter than you. I donโ€™t fall for any woman. Theyโ€™re more trouble than theyโ€™re worth!โ€ Uriah said smugly, โ€œI steer clear of drama.โ€

Silas smirked, โ€œMavis is a woman.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s different. Sheโ€™s my apprentice,โ€ Uriah clarified. โ€œItโ€™s purely a mentorโ€“student relationship.โ€

โ€œOh, mentorโ€“student, huh? Does Mavis see it that way, too?โ€

โ€œOf course,โ€ Uriah replied confidently. โ€œWeโ€™re as innocent as they come. Donโ€™t get any funny ideas.โ€

โ€œSure.โ€ Silas leaned back, a sly smile on his lips. โ€œBut what if Mavisโ€™s feelings arenโ€™t so innocent? What if she confessed that she liked you?โ€

Uriah frowned. โ€œThat would never happen.โ€

โ€œBut if it did?โ€

โ€œThen Iโ€™d nip that nonsense in the bud.โ€

โ€œYou wouldnโ€™t fall for Mavis?โ€ Silas asked, clearly entertained by the conversation.

โ€œNot a chance,โ€ Uriah said sternly. โ€œI donโ€™t need the hassle of romance. Women become complications, and I donโ€™t need any vulnerabilities. You know the life I lead, so no, never.โ€

With that, Uriah hopped off the desk.

โ€œEnough about me. Letโ€™s focus on your predicament. Sheโ€™s already your wife. Got any plans to win her over?โ€

โ€œAny suggestions?โ€ Silas asked, deep in thought.

โ€œFlowers?โ€ Uriah offered somewhat sheepishly.

Silas gave him a long, penetrating look. โ€œWhy am I even asking you, Mr. No Experience? Get out of here!โ€

โ€œHey, Iโ€™m just trying to help! You heartless jerk,โ€ Uriah laughed, waving off Silasโ€™s dismissal as he headed out.

With Uriah gone, Wynton entered to discuss business with Silas.

Silasโ€™s intense gaze lingered on him for a moment too long.

โ€œMr. Myers, is there something on your mind?โ€ Wynton asked, nervously scratching his head. Silasโ€™s look made him uneasy, despite having checked the calendar to ensure today was supposedly a lucky day.
