Chapter 1009
โItโs fine. I can do it,โ Hayden said naturally as he picked up the basin and went to fetch warm water. The moment he stepped out, Lena turned to scold Keira.
โYou went through so much pain to give birth to his child. Why would you feel bad about letting him do something for you?โ
โItโs not that I feel badโI just feel embarrassed,โ Keira whispered in defense.
Lena rolled her eyes. โSo dramatic.โ
Keira shot her a glare. โJust wait until itโs your turn. When your husband has to handle your private matters, youโll understand how awkward it is.โ
The moment the words left Keiraโs mouth, she saw Lenaโs face turn red. Lena quickly hugged the baby and turned away. But Keira caught it. Something was off.
โWaitโฆwhy are you blushing?โ Keira asked suspiciously.
โI am not blushing,โ she denied immediately.
What Keira didnโt know was that her words had triggered the memory of Lenaโs ridiculous dreamโwhere she had been lying on the delivery bed, cursing Aaron while giving birth to his child. Just as she was trying to shake the thought, Hayden returned with the warm water and a pack of disinfecting wipes. He looked at Keira.
Keira sat there, frozen. She couldnโt bring herself to unbutton her clothes in front of him. They sat in awkward silence for a moment. Finally, Hayden reached out as if to help, and Keira snapped out of it.
โJust put everything here. Iโll do it myself,โ Keira blurted.
Lena turned back around just in time to see Keira struggling with her embarrassment. She scoffed. โHonestly, looking at how shy youโre acting, I canโt believe you even managed to get pregnant.โ
โShut up!โ Keira glared at her, completely mortified.
โFine, fine. Iโll step out,โ Lena said, amused. She carefully placed the baby back in the bassinet. โIโll be back in ten minutes. Or just press the call button when youโre done.โ
As soon as she left, Hayden and Keira both let out a small laugh. It wasnโt that they were actually being difficult about itโit was just that having a third person in the room made everything awkward.
Lena made her way to the nurseโs station, chatting with the sleepy night-shift nurse.
โDr. Lane, your friend is really generous,โ the nurse commented, clearly referring to the red envelopes.
โWhen a man welcomes a daughter, he should be willing to spend thousands of gold,โ Lena joked. โAnd since the hospital doesnโt allow cash gifts, if they did, I bet these envelopes would have been worth at least ten times more.โ She casually held up a hand to gesture a number.
The nurse, who had been drowsy just moments ago, immediately perked up. โThat much?! His wife is really lucky.โ
โLuck isnโt about money,โ Lena said thoughtfully. โA woman is truly lucky when her husband treats her well.โ She had seen firsthand how attentive and caring Hayden was toward Keira. He took care of everything himself, never letting others step in unless necessary.
โYouโre right,โ the nurse sighed wistfully. โI want to find a rich and caring husband too. Thatโs my New Yearโs wish!โ As she made her wish, she even clasped her hands together as if to seal the deal.
Lena watched her, then glanced at the window, where fireworks were occasionally lighting up the night sky. She smiled softly.
โDr. Lane, maybe you should get married this year too,โ the nurse teased.
Lena chuckled. โGotta find someone willing to marry me first.โ
โCome on! Itโs not that thereโs no oneโyou just set the bar too high,โ the nurse argued. โI know for a fact that several male doctors in this hospital have a crush on you. You should see the way they look at you.โ
โOh really?โ Lena smirked. โAlright, then. Make me a list. If thereโs someone decent, Iโll consider it.โ
โAre you serious? Iโll write it right now!โ The nurse instantly lost all traces of sleepiness.
Lena yawned. Now she was feeling a little drowsy. But before getting some rest, she had to make sure her goddaughter was fed first.
โGo ahead and make your list. Iโll check on my baby girl,โ she said as she stood up. She walked slowly back toward Keiraโs hospital room but didnโt enter immediately. Instead, she stood just outside the door. She didnโt want to walk in on something she shouldnโt see, but she couldnโt help overhearing what was being said inside.
She heard Haydenโs voice.
โBaby, should I be the one preparing the stuff for this in the future, or do you want to do it yourself?โ
There was a moment of silence. Then, Keira teasingly leaned toward him and whispered, โWhatโs wrong? Just touching me there already has you struggling?โ
