Chapter 1009

โ€œItโ€™s fine. I can do it,โ€ Hayden said naturally as he picked up the basin and went to fetch warm water. The moment he stepped out, Lena turned to scold Keira.

โ€œYou went through so much pain to give birth to his child. Why would you feel bad about letting him do something for you?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not that I feel badโ€”I just feel embarrassed,โ€ Keira whispered in defense.

Lena rolled her eyes. โ€œSo dramatic.โ€

Keira shot her a glare. โ€œJust wait until itโ€™s your turn. When your husband has to handle your private matters, youโ€™ll understand how awkward it is.โ€

The moment the words left Keiraโ€™s mouth, she saw Lenaโ€™s face turn red. Lena quickly hugged the baby and turned away. But Keira caught it. Something was off.

โ€œWaitโ€ฆwhy are you blushing?โ€ Keira asked suspiciously.

โ€œI am not blushing,โ€ she denied immediately.

What Keira didnโ€™t know was that her words had triggered the memory of Lenaโ€™s ridiculous dreamโ€”where she had been lying on the delivery bed, cursing Aaron while giving birth to his child. Just as she was trying to shake the thought, Hayden returned with the warm water and a pack of disinfecting wipes. He looked at Keira.

Keira sat there, frozen. She couldnโ€™t bring herself to unbutton her clothes in front of him. They sat in awkward silence for a moment. Finally, Hayden reached out as if to help, and Keira snapped out of it.

โ€œJust put everything here. Iโ€™ll do it myself,โ€ Keira blurted.

Lena turned back around just in time to see Keira struggling with her embarrassment. She scoffed. โ€œHonestly, looking at how shy youโ€™re acting, I canโ€™t believe you even managed to get pregnant.โ€

โ€œShut up!โ€ Keira glared at her, completely mortified.

โ€œFine, fine. Iโ€™ll step out,โ€ Lena said, amused. She carefully placed the baby back in the bassinet. โ€œIโ€™ll be back in ten minutes. Or just press the call button when youโ€™re done.โ€

As soon as she left, Hayden and Keira both let out a small laugh. It wasnโ€™t that they were actually being difficult about itโ€”it was just that having a third person in the room made everything awkward.

Lena made her way to the nurseโ€™s station, chatting with the sleepy night-shift nurse.

โ€œDr. Lane, your friend is really generous,โ€ the nurse commented, clearly referring to the red envelopes.

โ€œWhen a man welcomes a daughter, he should be willing to spend thousands of gold,โ€ Lena joked. โ€œAnd since the hospital doesnโ€™t allow cash gifts, if they did, I bet these envelopes would have been worth at least ten times more.โ€ She casually held up a hand to gesture a number.

The nurse, who had been drowsy just moments ago, immediately perked up. โ€œThat much?! His wife is really lucky.โ€

โ€œLuck isnโ€™t about money,โ€ Lena said thoughtfully. โ€œA woman is truly lucky when her husband treats her well.โ€ She had seen firsthand how attentive and caring Hayden was toward Keira. He took care of everything himself, never letting others step in unless necessary.

โ€œYouโ€™re right,โ€ the nurse sighed wistfully. โ€œI want to find a rich and caring husband too. Thatโ€™s my New Yearโ€™s wish!โ€ As she made her wish, she even clasped her hands together as if to seal the deal.

Lena watched her, then glanced at the window, where fireworks were occasionally lighting up the night sky. She smiled softly.

โ€œDr. Lane, maybe you should get married this year too,โ€ the nurse teased.

Lena chuckled. โ€œGotta find someone willing to marry me first.โ€

โ€œCome on! Itโ€™s not that thereโ€™s no oneโ€”you just set the bar too high,โ€ the nurse argued. โ€œI know for a fact that several male doctors in this hospital have a crush on you. You should see the way they look at you.โ€

โ€œOh really?โ€ Lena smirked. โ€œAlright, then. Make me a list. If thereโ€™s someone decent, Iโ€™ll consider it.โ€

โ€œAre you serious? Iโ€™ll write it right now!โ€ The nurse instantly lost all traces of sleepiness.

Lena yawned. Now she was feeling a little drowsy. But before getting some rest, she had to make sure her goddaughter was fed first.

โ€œGo ahead and make your list. Iโ€™ll check on my baby girl,โ€ she said as she stood up. She walked slowly back toward Keiraโ€™s hospital room but didnโ€™t enter immediately. Instead, she stood just outside the door. She didnโ€™t want to walk in on something she shouldnโ€™t see, but she couldnโ€™t help overhearing what was being said inside.

She heard Haydenโ€™s voice.

โ€œBaby, should I be the one preparing the stuff for this in the future, or do you want to do it yourself?โ€

There was a moment of silence. Then, Keira teasingly leaned toward him and whispered, โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong? Just touching me there already has you struggling?โ€
