Chapter 122
The awkwardness hung heavy, but honestly, it was probably for the best that Hayden knew. He grabbed his phone from the table and left. The moment he was gone, Demi practically squealed, declaring it all over.
I didn't give it much thought. I never intended a relationship with Hayden, so his anger or misunderstanding didn't bother me. He was merely a passing acquaintance. I had zero interest in another relationship. It wasn't a vow against love, just a lack of emotional energy.
After breakfast, I planned to drop Demi off at work before my job interview. I'd only submitted my resume yesterday, so the interview invitation this morning was a surprise. The speed was unexpected, but a quick job offer sounded appealing.
Reaching the parking lot, I saw Wayne's car. He stepped out, opening the back door for Lindey. They were here to see me.
"Hi, Lindey," I greeted her.
Lindey grasped my hand, tears immediately welling. Her reaction stunned me. I glanced at Wayne for help; he quickly offered her a tissue. "Mom, you're frightening Rea. Just say what you need to sayโno need for the tears."
Lindey dabbed at her eyes. "Rea, let's go home and talk."
I looked to Wayne for explanation. He sighed. "My mom tried calling, but couldn't get through. You didn't respond to her messages either. She was so worried she didn't sleep, and insisted I bring her to find you. She already knows what Jace did."
I suspected as much.
"Lindey, let's sit down in the restaurant. You haven't had breakfast. We can talk while we eat," I suggested, hesitant to go to the Johnston residence.
Lindey shook her head. "I don't have an appetite."
"Then let's talk," I insisted gently, and she agreed.
I turned to Wayne. "Why don't you take Demi to the amusement park? I'll stay and talk with your mom, then take her home."
Wayne looked at Lindey, then at me, nodding. "Thank you."
As Demi left with Wayne, I led Lindey back into the restaurant. She refused my offer to order breakfast, but I insisted, getting her usual favorites.
"Rea, I know what Jace did. You were right to hit himโhe deserved it," Lindey said, causing me to look down at my hands.
"It's my fault for not raising him better. He's made so many mistakes and hurt you," Lindey continued, shaking her head, burdened by guilt.
I bit my lip. "Lindey, this isn't your fault. Jace made his choicesโhe's an adult."
I wasn't sure of Lindey's intentions, but suspected she aimed to manipulate my emotions, perhaps to convince me to forgive Jace. Whether I forgave him mattered little, but I worried she hoped for a reconciliation.
Lindey nodded slightly. "You're right. Don't let this weigh on you."
"Lindey, you're overthinking it. I did nothing wrong," I said calmly but firmly, catching her off guard.
After a moment, she nodded. "Yes, yes, it's all Jace's fault."
I remained quiet, but she continued, "Rea, about your resignationโMatthew doesn't agree either. Jace will apologize and ask you to return."
