Chapter 123

Her words hit me like a curveball. โ€œLindey, Iโ€™ve already resigned, and I have another interview today.โ€

โ€œWhat? That fast?โ€ Lindey looked genuinely shocked.

โ€œHonestly, I decided to leave the day Jace and I didnโ€™t get our marriage certificate,โ€ I said, meeting her gaze directly. โ€œWorking with Jace after everything would just beโ€ฆ weird. Even if he didnโ€™t want me to quit, I planned to leave after the amusement park project.โ€ I tried to keep my explanation simple.

Lindey shook her head. โ€œIt doesnโ€™t have to be like this, Rea. If itโ€™s awkward, you could transfer to another department or branch. Just put some space between you two.โ€

โ€œI understand youโ€™re worried I might struggle elsewhere, but I really want to see whatโ€™s out there,โ€ I said firmly.

Tears welled in Lindeyโ€™s eyes. She shook her head, whispering, โ€œHow did it end up like this? If you canโ€™t be my daughter-in-law, I can accept that, but now youโ€™re leaving our company too? Are you planning to cut ties with us completely?โ€

Seeing her so upset tightened my chest. After everything, it was hard not to feel something.

โ€œIโ€™ll still visit you and Matthew, I promise,โ€ I offered, hoping to reassure her.

Lindey wiped away her tears and gave me a serious look. โ€œRea, be honestโ€”are you seeing someone else? Is that why youโ€™re quitting? Are you worried he might have issues with your past with Jace?โ€

I couldnโ€™t help but laugh at the idea. Everyone seemed convinced Hayden and I were a couple, even though there was nothing between us.

โ€œIโ€™m not seeing anyone. And even if I were, no man would dictate my decisions. Youโ€™re overthinking this,โ€ I assured her.

โ€œThen promise me you wonโ€™t leave the company,โ€ Lindey said, hesitating before adding, โ€œAt least stay so I can see you whenever I miss you, just by picking up the phone.โ€ Her words held the warmth and affection of a mother.

But I couldnโ€™t promise that. โ€œEven if I leave the company, Iโ€™m not leaving town. Iโ€™ll still be around, and you can call me anytime.โ€

Lindey fell silent, and for a moment, I thought we were on the same page. Then she said, โ€œRea, thereโ€™s something I need to tell you, but Iโ€™m scared youโ€™ll be angry.โ€

Her words made my heart skip a beat. Whatever she was about to say, it wouldnโ€™t be easy to hear.

โ€œThen maybe itโ€™s better if you donโ€™t,โ€ I interrupted.

Lindey looked surprised by my bluntness, then smiled. โ€œBut I have to say it, because itโ€™s about your happiness.โ€ No wonder she was the chairmanโ€™s wifeโ€”she knew how to be both firm and gentle.

I gave her a faint smile. โ€œAlright, go ahead.โ€

โ€œMatthew is planning to have Wayne start his own business. Heโ€™s going to register a company in his name. Would you consider helping him?โ€ Lindey asked carefully, but I understood her true intention immediately. This wasnโ€™t just about helping Wayneโ€”it was about setting me up with him now that things with Jace had ended.

The whole thing reminded me of the saying, โ€œKeep the wealth within the family.โ€ It was clear they didnโ€™t want the girl theyโ€™d practically raised to end up with someone outside the family. If I wasnโ€™t marrying the younger son, then why not the older one?

โ€œLindey,โ€ I said directly, โ€œdo you really think if I ended up with Wayne, Jace would be able to handle it? How do you think the brothers would get along?โ€

Lindeyโ€™s lips trembled. โ€œBut I canโ€™t stand the thought of you leaving us, leaving me.โ€

โ€œThen Iโ€™d rather just be your goddaughter,โ€ I stated firmly.
