Chapter 123
Her words hit me like a curveball. โLindey, Iโve already resigned, and I have another interview today.โ
โWhat? That fast?โ Lindey looked genuinely shocked.
โHonestly, I decided to leave the day Jace and I didnโt get our marriage certificate,โ I said, meeting her gaze directly. โWorking with Jace after everything would just beโฆ weird. Even if he didnโt want me to quit, I planned to leave after the amusement park project.โ I tried to keep my explanation simple.
Lindey shook her head. โIt doesnโt have to be like this, Rea. If itโs awkward, you could transfer to another department or branch. Just put some space between you two.โ
โI understand youโre worried I might struggle elsewhere, but I really want to see whatโs out there,โ I said firmly.
Tears welled in Lindeyโs eyes. She shook her head, whispering, โHow did it end up like this? If you canโt be my daughter-in-law, I can accept that, but now youโre leaving our company too? Are you planning to cut ties with us completely?โ
Seeing her so upset tightened my chest. After everything, it was hard not to feel something.
โIโll still visit you and Matthew, I promise,โ I offered, hoping to reassure her.
Lindey wiped away her tears and gave me a serious look. โRea, be honestโare you seeing someone else? Is that why youโre quitting? Are you worried he might have issues with your past with Jace?โ
I couldnโt help but laugh at the idea. Everyone seemed convinced Hayden and I were a couple, even though there was nothing between us.
โIโm not seeing anyone. And even if I were, no man would dictate my decisions. Youโre overthinking this,โ I assured her.
โThen promise me you wonโt leave the company,โ Lindey said, hesitating before adding, โAt least stay so I can see you whenever I miss you, just by picking up the phone.โ Her words held the warmth and affection of a mother.
But I couldnโt promise that. โEven if I leave the company, Iโm not leaving town. Iโll still be around, and you can call me anytime.โ
Lindey fell silent, and for a moment, I thought we were on the same page. Then she said, โRea, thereโs something I need to tell you, but Iโm scared youโll be angry.โ
Her words made my heart skip a beat. Whatever she was about to say, it wouldnโt be easy to hear.
โThen maybe itโs better if you donโt,โ I interrupted.
Lindey looked surprised by my bluntness, then smiled. โBut I have to say it, because itโs about your happiness.โ No wonder she was the chairmanโs wifeโshe knew how to be both firm and gentle.
I gave her a faint smile. โAlright, go ahead.โ
โMatthew is planning to have Wayne start his own business. Heโs going to register a company in his name. Would you consider helping him?โ Lindey asked carefully, but I understood her true intention immediately. This wasnโt just about helping Wayneโit was about setting me up with him now that things with Jace had ended.
The whole thing reminded me of the saying, โKeep the wealth within the family.โ It was clear they didnโt want the girl theyโd practically raised to end up with someone outside the family. If I wasnโt marrying the younger son, then why not the older one?
โLindey,โ I said directly, โdo you really think if I ended up with Wayne, Jace would be able to handle it? How do you think the brothers would get along?โ
Lindeyโs lips trembled. โBut I canโt stand the thought of you leaving us, leaving me.โ
โThen Iโd rather just be your goddaughter,โ I stated firmly.
