Chapter 258

โ€œExcuse me, could you two let me through, please?โ€ I asked, trying to sound casual.

Jace remained motionless, his gaze fixed on me. Tanya glanced at me before silently stepping aside, her grip on Jaceโ€™s arm suggesting she thought I might snatch him away.

โ€œRea, come on, letโ€™s eat,โ€ Lindey called as I entered the private room, her smile warm and inviting.

I slid into my seat, feigning ignorance. โ€œWhy is it just the two of us?โ€

โ€œIt was always meant to be just us. Someone else decided to crash the party, completely clueless,โ€ she replied, her disdain for Tanyaโ€”and probably Jaceโ€”obvious.

I chuckled softly. โ€œIf you keep this up, itโ€™ll strain things with Jace.โ€

I wasnโ€™t being noble; Matthew and Lindey had always been good to me, and I genuinely wanted their family to get along.

โ€œThis is on him,โ€ Lindey said firmly.

Having said my piece, I let it go and enjoyed the delicious food.

โ€œWhat took you so long in the restroom?โ€ Lindey asked.

โ€œI ran into Hayden,โ€ I admitted honestly.

Lindey paused, then teased, โ€œWhat, did he follow you to make sure no one snatched you up?โ€

โ€œNo, heโ€™s here for lunch with his boss,โ€ I replied vaguely.

Lindey moved the best dishes closer. โ€œRea, Haydenโ€™s a great guy. Heโ€™s got character and good looks. If youโ€™re with him, Matthew and I would be happy. Itโ€™s justโ€ฆโ€

She trailed off. โ€œYouโ€™re worried he doesnโ€™t come from a wealthy family, right?โ€

โ€œExactly. Itโ€™s not about him personally. We just donโ€™t want you to struggle. Life can be really tough when moneyโ€™s tight,โ€ she sighed.

I understood; RiverwaveCorp wasnโ€™t a legacy company; she and Matthew built it from scratch. Theyโ€™d endured hardship in the early days, though they rarely spoke of it. Jace had described their struggles before their success. Back then, the entire familyโ€”Jace, his parents, his brother Wayne, and his grandmotherโ€”relied on Matthewโ€™s single income, barely making ends meet. They lived in a tiny two-bedroom house; his parents had one bedroom, and he and Wayne shared the other with their grandmother. Lindey managed the household while Matthew worked tirelessly.

Eventually, Lindey found work, taking on whatever she could to keep the family afloat, enduring her own hardships.
