Chapter 259

Iโ€™d failed miserably as a daughter. I knew my parents died in a car accident, but I knew nothing about what happened that day.

Lindeyโ€™s expression shifted, and she gently grasped my wrist. โ€œRea, we agreed not to talk about this. Itโ€™s in the past.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not a kid anymore. I can handle it. Please, tell me,โ€ I said, squeezing her hand.

Her hand trembled. โ€œItโ€™s over. Why bring it up?โ€

I was quiet for a few seconds. โ€œLindey, they were my parents. My only family.โ€ My parents, orphans themselves, left me one too.

Perhaps my words reached her. After a long pause, Lindey finally spoke. โ€œWhen Matthew and I reached the crash site, your mother was gone. Your father was barely alive. He grasped Matthewโ€™s hand and could only say your nameโ€ฆโ€

Lindey choked up, and a lump formed in my throat. It felt like ripping open an old wound; now I understood her reluctance. She didnโ€™t want to hurt me.

โ€œWe knew he was worried about you, that he was asking us to care for you,โ€ Lindey murmured.

Seeing her upset made me feel worse, but I pushed past the ache in my heart. โ€œWhat exactly happened? Was it a collision, or something else?โ€

Lindey sighed. โ€œTheir car rear-ended a large tanker truck.โ€

A memory of a crash scene from a phone video flashed in my mind. My heart clenched. โ€œWas there a brake issue?โ€

Lindeyโ€™s lips parted. โ€œIโ€™m not sure. The driver died instantly, and the car was totaled. We donโ€™t know the cause.โ€

โ€œDoes Matthew know?โ€ I asked, remembering his upset reaction last time.

โ€œThisโ€ฆโ€ Lindey hesitated.

โ€œLindey, please,โ€ I pleaded, my voice cracking.

She touched my face. โ€œRea, theyโ€™re gone. Whatโ€™s the point of this?โ€

Her reluctance fueled my anxiety. โ€œIs there something youโ€™re not telling me?โ€

Seeing my distress, she sighed. โ€œIt seemedโ€ฆ there was a brake issue.โ€

โ€œDidnโ€™t the driver check them?โ€ I asked, struggling for calm.

Lindey squeezed my hand. โ€œRea, the driver also died.โ€

With the driver gone, determining fault was impossible. And Haydenโ€™s father was my dadโ€™s driverโ€ฆ

โ€œRea, please, letโ€™s not talk about this anymore. Come, eat something,โ€ Lindey said, trying to change the subject.

But how could I eat? My stomach was in knots. I remembered Haydenโ€™s investigation into his fatherโ€™s death, meaning it couldnโ€™t have been his fatherโ€™s fault. Perhaps it involved the contract my dad was about to sign. I glanced at Lindey and decided to risk it. โ€œDo you know if my parents planned to start a business before the accident?โ€

She was about to give me food when her hand shook, and the dish slipped. I saw goosebumps spread across her arms. Something was wrong. My heart sank, a chill creeping up my spine. โ€œLindeyโ€ฆโ€
