Chapter 306

โ€œYes, this is Keira. Whoโ€™s calling?โ€ I asked, my eyes drifting back to Jace. He didnโ€™t seem to notice, heading toward a nearby heater.

โ€œIโ€™m from Amour Eternel Assurance, agent number A8338. Four years ago, you and Mr. Johnston purchased a love insurance policy. The policy term has expired, and we need to verify some information.โ€

A chill ran down my spine. I glanced instinctively at Hayden. He had been holding me close, but the moment I took the call, he stepped back, giving me space. Hayden was always so considerate, ensuring I felt safe and supported, yet never stifled.

โ€œCould you please confirm if you and Mr. Johnston are currently in a relationship or married?โ€ the agent asked.

My eyes flicked back to Jace. He was on his own call, a deep frown furrowing his brow.

โ€œMs. Kay, are you still there?โ€ the agent pressed, likely wondering about my silence.

I swallowed hard. โ€œYes, Iโ€™m here. Weโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWeโ€™ve already broken up,โ€ I was about to say when Jace, who hadnโ€™t even glanced at me, suddenly looked up and locked eyes with me. We held each other's gaze across the room, the words catching in my throat.

โ€œMs. Kay?โ€ the agent repeated.

Without thinking, I blurted, โ€œWhy donโ€™t you ask him?โ€

โ€œWe did. Another colleague is speaking with him now.โ€ I realized Jace was receiving the same call. Talk about a small world.

I swallowed, clearing my throat. โ€œWe broke up.โ€

โ€œAre you sure?โ€ The question felt accusatory.

I glanced away from Jace, at Hayden, then down at the ring on my finger. โ€œYes. Iโ€™m already married.โ€

The agent was silent. โ€œAlright, Ms. Kay. If Mr. Johnstonโ€™s response matches yours, your love insurance will be invalidated.โ€

โ€œOkay!โ€ I said, ready to end the call.

But he continued, โ€œMs. Kay, I wish you a lifetime of love and happiness. You and your spouse might consider a marriage insurance policy. Itโ€™s available in one-year terms, with greater benefits the longer your marriage lastsโ€”โ€

โ€œThanks, but weโ€™re not interested,โ€ I interrupted.

โ€œMs. Kayโ€ฆโ€ He persisted.

I cut him off. โ€œCan your insurance guarantee love and marriage will last?โ€ The answer, of course, was no. Jace and I were living proof.

I hung up amidst the awkward silence. Jace had also ended his call, but he was still looking at me, just staring. I quickly averted my gaze and walked over to Hayden.
