Chapter 307

โ€œThis is an airport terminal. There are people everywhere, including children,โ€ I reminded Hayden.

He hummed. โ€œI know.โ€

โ€œThen why are you stillโ€ฆโ€ My face flushed.

โ€œPlease,โ€ he said softly but firmly.

I assumed heโ€™d noticed Jace and was acting out of jealousy, perhaps wanting to send a message. Taking a deep breath, I braced myself for his kiss amidst the bustling terminal.

But instead of his lips, something slipped into my hand. I opened my eyes and saw a small pouch.

โ€œWhatโ€™s this?โ€ I asked, utterly confused.

Hayden nodded towards it, urging me to look. I opened the pouch and found two bank cards and a couple of documents: his army discharge certificate and a blood donation record.

โ€œWhat does this mean?โ€ I asked, still bewildered.

Hayden showed me the discharge certificate. โ€œThis proves Iโ€™ve been through a lot and emerged strongerโ€”more dependable than any insurance. And this,โ€ he said, holding up the blood donation record, โ€œshows I have a compassionate heart. These cards? They hold everything I have to give.โ€

I thought of dramatic novel scenes where the hero relinquishes everything to prove his love. But this wasnโ€™t just about money; Hayden was giving me his trust, his beliefs, himself.

Looking at the blood donation record, I felt a pang in my chest. โ€œHayden, why are you giving me all this?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s my promise to you. This is more real than any love insurance,โ€ he said, making me wonder if he knew about the love insurance Jace and I had purchased years ago. But that was irrelevant. What mattered was his willingness to give me everything.

โ€œIโ€™ll keep these,โ€ I said, holding the documents. โ€œBut you should keep the cards.โ€ I wouldnโ€™t take his money. I wasnโ€™t someone who chased after money; if I were, I would have stayed with Jace.

Hayden didnโ€™t reclaim the cards. He looked sheepish. โ€œThis money probably isnโ€™t enough to cover Yunaโ€™s surgery.โ€

I blinked, then laughed. โ€œOh, so youโ€™re asking me to chip in?โ€

He took my hand. โ€œKiki, Iโ€™m sorry.โ€

I laughed harder, a genuine, bright laugh.

Hayden looked confused. โ€œWhy are you laughing? Do you think Iโ€™m adorably broke?โ€

That made me laugh even more. He was actually using phrases like that now?

I nodded, still giggling. โ€œYes, adorably broke.โ€

โ€œKikiโ€ฆโ€

โ€œHayden,โ€ I said, sobering. โ€œDid you know I used to think you had a secret identity?โ€

โ€œA secret identity?โ€ He looked puzzled. โ€œWhat kind of secret identity?โ€

โ€œYou know that big boss at our company? The one whose last name is Hart? I thought maybe that was you,โ€ I admitted.

Hayden raised an eyebrow. โ€œAnd now youโ€™re sure Iโ€™m not?โ€

I nodded. โ€œRight, considering youโ€™re so broke you canโ€™t even cover Yunaโ€™s surgery, thereโ€™s no way youโ€™re secretly the big boss funding Ron.โ€

Hayden fell silent.

โ€œBut our big boss is kind of strange,โ€ I continued, filling the silence. โ€œIt felt like he was favoring me. Now that I see how Ron treats you, I get it. He probably just values talent, which is why he was good to me. I guess I was overthinking things.โ€

Hayden remained silent. I shook his arm lightly. โ€œWhy arenโ€™t you saying anything?โ€

โ€œKiki,โ€ he said softly, โ€œdo you really hate it when people lie to you?โ€
