Chapter 330
He didnโt flinch. Just stood there, staring.
โDo you know me?โ I asked, without a smile.
โNo.โ
I gave him a once-over. He wasnโt immediately striking, but the more I looked, the more attractive he seemed. Heโd traded his hoodie for a light blue T-shirt, looking clean and relaxed. Casual, but it suited him.
โSo, we just keep bumping into each other for fun, huh?โ I retorted, disbelieving his denial.
โWe donโt know each other,โ he said, then added, โbut you look a lot like someone I know.โ
I laughed. That line was ancient.
Seeing my amusement, he blushed. โIโm serious. I can show you.โ
Before I could respond, he produced his phone and showed me a picture. My breath hitched. A girl with a bright smile and her hair in a perfect bun stared back at me. She was my double, eerily similar. The only difference was a small beauty mark by her eye, which I lacked.
I stared at the photo for a long moment before meeting his gaze. โShe does look like me. But I swear, I donโt know her.โ
โI know,โ he said, pocketing his phone, looking almost sad.
โThen why are you following me?โ I asked, glancing at his sneakers. He didnโt seem like a creepy stalker, more like a gym teacher or maybe a grad student.
He remained silent.
I decided to be direct. โDude, this is stalking. I could call the cops.โ
His eyes widened. โIโI donโt mean any harm. I swear.โ
โLook, even if youโre not trying to be creepy, following a girl around? Not okay. Itโs sketchy, and it makes me feel unsafe. You understand that, right?โ My tone hardened, like I was addressing a colleague making a mistake.
He hung his head. โYeah. Iโm sorry.โ
I sighed. โLook, you donโt seem like a bad guy. But yesterday and today? Not okay. Donโt do it again.โ It was a warning.
He didnโt argue, and I started to walk away.
โWait,โ he called.
I paused, turning back.
โMy nameโs Wade Smith. Iโm a PhD student,โ he said, showing me his student ID.
My eyes flicked to the school name: Kelhmark Royal Academy. Whoa. That was the elite school in Kelhmark.
Suddenly, he wasnโt just some random guy. Yesterday, his hasty departure had hinted at something different. Now, my instincts were confirmed.
โKRA was my dream,โ I admitted, laughing slightly, returning his ID. โDidnโt get in though. Guess it wasnโt meant to be.โ
It was true. I hadnโt gone to KRA because of Jace. He hadnโt wanted to, and I, being a lovesick fool, had followed his lead instead of pursuing my own plans. Neither of us ended up there.
Thinking about it, I rolled my eyes at my past foolishness.
Wadeโs expression shifted, becoming serious. โThe girl in the photoโฆ sheโs really sick. She might not make it much longer.โ
I blinked, surprised. โIs she your girlfriend?โ
He swallowed, his jaw tightening. โNo. Sheโs my advisor.โ
She sounded brilliant, but something terrible had happened.
โWhat happened to her?โ I asked gently, unsure if I should.
His face crumpled, as if he were holding back tears. โIt wasnโt an illness. She was inโฆ in a car crash. About a year ago.โ
A heavy silence followed. His words were fragmented, but I understood. I saw his sadness and blurted out, โWas the accident your fault?โ
His head dropped lower, and after a long pause, he whispered, โYeah.โ
Suddenly, everything clickedโthe sadness, his gaze. He saw his advisor in me, or at least, who she used to be.
I didnโt know what to say, so I asked, โSheโs not going to wake up, is she?โ He wouldnโt be talking like this if there were any hope.
Wade shook his head, his voice breaking. โNo. Sheโs only alive because of the machines.โ
A knot formed in my chest.
