Chapter 331

If they unplugged the oxygen machine, she would be gone forever.

โ€œYou should go be with her, for her last moments,โ€ I whispered.

โ€œI know, Iโ€™m going,โ€ Wade replied, looking up. โ€œSorry for bothering you.โ€

โ€œI still hope for a miracle,โ€ I said.

He didnโ€™t respond, turning and walking away. I stared after him, feeling something differentโ€”unlike last night.

โ€œWhat are you staring at? Iโ€™ve been calling, but you didnโ€™t answer,โ€ Hayden said, approaching and taking the flowers from me.

I wasnโ€™t sure how to tell Hayden about Wade, especially since I hadnโ€™t mentioned our encounter last night. Wadeโ€™s story was so complicated. Mostly, a strange sadness settled over me, Wadeโ€™s words echoing: โ€œShe might not make it much longer.โ€

โ€œHey, what do you think it means when two unrelated people look alike?โ€ I asked.

โ€œPeople share genes. With so many people, similar genes are normal,โ€ Hayden replied, matter-of-factly.

Thinking of Wade and why heโ€™d followed me, I asked, โ€œDo you think youโ€™ll ever look for traces of me in someone else? Someone who looks like me?โ€

โ€œWhy would I do that?โ€ he retorted.

I met his gaze. โ€œI donโ€™t know, just a hypothetical.โ€

โ€œTo me, you are unique.โ€

He always made me feel special.

I smiled. โ€œOkay, okay. I was just asking. Donโ€™t overthink it.โ€

Hayden softened, tucking a stray strand of hair behind my ear. โ€œIโ€™m serious. Iโ€™d never look for your shadow in someone else. Youโ€™re one of a kind.โ€

I laughed at his sweetness. โ€œAlright, got it. Letโ€™s go.โ€

As we walked, hand in hand, he asked, โ€œWhat made you ask that?โ€

โ€œI saw a picture. Thereโ€™s a girl who looks remarkably like me,โ€ I paused, the image vivid in my mind. โ€œLike, ninety percent.โ€

Initially, I was shocked, but the more I considered it, the stranger it becameโ€”she really did resemble me.

โ€œThat similar?โ€ Hayden sounded surprised.

โ€œYeah, so Iโ€™m worried you mightโ€ฆโ€ I teased, โ€œโ€ฆmix us up one day.โ€

But Hayden didnโ€™t laugh or defend himself. Instead, he asked, โ€œWhere did you see this?โ€

โ€œOn a guyโ€™s phone.โ€

โ€œA guyโ€™s phone?โ€

โ€œYeah, a postgraduate student,โ€ I said casually, explaining about Wade.

Hayden fell silent.

Sensing something was wrong, I tilted my head and gently scratched his palm. โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong? Youโ€™re not jealous again, are you?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ he said, but his averted gaze contradicted him.

I huffed. โ€œThen why arenโ€™t you saying anything? You totally areโ€”โ€

โ€œKiki,โ€ Hayden interrupted, stopping in his tracks. โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you tell me about this yesterday?โ€

โ€œIt was minor. I didnโ€™t think it was a big deal,โ€ I shrugged. โ€œPlus, I thought he was Lenaโ€™s secret admirer.โ€ I explained, then added, half-jokingly, โ€œDonโ€™t be so petty. I know your jealousy shows you care, but sometimes it feels like Iโ€™m in a cage. Itโ€™s uncomfortable.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not being petty. Iโ€™m worried,โ€ he retorted, his voice serious. โ€œWhat if heโ€™s up to something bad? If you donโ€™t tell me, I canโ€™t protect you. What if something happens to you?โ€

Okay, maybe I was overthinking.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ I said softly. โ€œIโ€™ll tell you next time, I promise.โ€ Reaching up, I ruffled his hair with a smile. โ€œNow, stop being mad.โ€

He smiled faintly, the tension easing. I playfully scratched his palm again. โ€œYou know, youโ€™re really cute when you smile.โ€

With that, I tugged him along. But glancing ahead, I froze. Three familiar faces stood nearby, their eyes fixed on us.
