Chapter 331
If they unplugged the oxygen machine, she would be gone forever.
โYou should go be with her, for her last moments,โ I whispered.
โI know, Iโm going,โ Wade replied, looking up. โSorry for bothering you.โ
โI still hope for a miracle,โ I said.
He didnโt respond, turning and walking away. I stared after him, feeling something differentโunlike last night.
โWhat are you staring at? Iโve been calling, but you didnโt answer,โ Hayden said, approaching and taking the flowers from me.
I wasnโt sure how to tell Hayden about Wade, especially since I hadnโt mentioned our encounter last night. Wadeโs story was so complicated. Mostly, a strange sadness settled over me, Wadeโs words echoing: โShe might not make it much longer.โ
โHey, what do you think it means when two unrelated people look alike?โ I asked.
โPeople share genes. With so many people, similar genes are normal,โ Hayden replied, matter-of-factly.
Thinking of Wade and why heโd followed me, I asked, โDo you think youโll ever look for traces of me in someone else? Someone who looks like me?โ
โWhy would I do that?โ he retorted.
I met his gaze. โI donโt know, just a hypothetical.โ
โTo me, you are unique.โ
He always made me feel special.
I smiled. โOkay, okay. I was just asking. Donโt overthink it.โ
Hayden softened, tucking a stray strand of hair behind my ear. โIโm serious. Iโd never look for your shadow in someone else. Youโre one of a kind.โ
I laughed at his sweetness. โAlright, got it. Letโs go.โ
As we walked, hand in hand, he asked, โWhat made you ask that?โ
โI saw a picture. Thereโs a girl who looks remarkably like me,โ I paused, the image vivid in my mind. โLike, ninety percent.โ
Initially, I was shocked, but the more I considered it, the stranger it becameโshe really did resemble me.
โThat similar?โ Hayden sounded surprised.
โYeah, so Iโm worried you mightโฆโ I teased, โโฆmix us up one day.โ
But Hayden didnโt laugh or defend himself. Instead, he asked, โWhere did you see this?โ
โOn a guyโs phone.โ
โA guyโs phone?โ
โYeah, a postgraduate student,โ I said casually, explaining about Wade.
Hayden fell silent.
Sensing something was wrong, I tilted my head and gently scratched his palm. โWhatโs wrong? Youโre not jealous again, are you?โ
โNo,โ he said, but his averted gaze contradicted him.
I huffed. โThen why arenโt you saying anything? You totally areโโ
โKiki,โ Hayden interrupted, stopping in his tracks. โWhy didnโt you tell me about this yesterday?โ
โIt was minor. I didnโt think it was a big deal,โ I shrugged. โPlus, I thought he was Lenaโs secret admirer.โ I explained, then added, half-jokingly, โDonโt be so petty. I know your jealousy shows you care, but sometimes it feels like Iโm in a cage. Itโs uncomfortable.โ
โIโm not being petty. Iโm worried,โ he retorted, his voice serious. โWhat if heโs up to something bad? If you donโt tell me, I canโt protect you. What if something happens to you?โ
Okay, maybe I was overthinking.
โIโm sorry,โ I said softly. โIโll tell you next time, I promise.โ Reaching up, I ruffled his hair with a smile. โNow, stop being mad.โ
He smiled faintly, the tension easing. I playfully scratched his palm again. โYou know, youโre really cute when you smile.โ
With that, I tugged him along. But glancing ahead, I froze. Three familiar faces stood nearby, their eyes fixed on us.
