Chapter 332

It seemed they had been watching for a while, meaning theyโ€™d seen our affectionate moments. Great. Their expressions weren't pleasant. Since weโ€™d bumped into them, avoiding a greeting was impossible. Hayden and I approached, saying hello to Lindey, Matthew, and Wayne.

Lindey smiled first. โ€œRea, Hayden, what are you two doing here?โ€

I glanced at Hayden. โ€œVisiting a friend.โ€ I kept it vague, omitting Yuna. Hayden fiercely protected his sister's privacy; if Matthew or Lindey knew she was in the hospital, theyโ€™d want to visit, and explaining that to Yuna would be complicated. It was best to keep it under wraps.

I turned to Matthew, who leaned on Lindey, looking pale and unwell. โ€œWhat happened to Matthew?โ€

โ€œHeโ€™sโ€”โ€ Lindey began, but Matthew interrupted. โ€œJust high blood pressure, nothing serious.โ€

Lindeyโ€™s look screamed โ€œliar,โ€ but she didnโ€™t press him. He was clearly hiding something, as I was with my recent distance. We werenโ€™t as close as before. I remembered how, previously, even a minor cold had Matthew texting me for help.

โ€œRea, need any help?โ€ Wayne offered.

โ€œNo, weโ€™re good,โ€ I replied with a polite smile.

An uncomfortable silence fell until Hayden intervened, smoothing things over. โ€œMr. Johnston, perhaps we could accompany you to the doctor?โ€

It was a thoughtful gesture, reflecting well on me.

Matthew waved it off. โ€œNo need. You two handle your business.โ€

Lindey added, โ€œRea, come see Matthew again later.โ€

โ€œAlright. Hayden and I will go now.โ€

Hayden nodded politely, and we left, hand in hand.

We hadnโ€™t gone far when I heard Lindey sigh. โ€œSheโ€™s really grown distant.โ€

โ€œStop overthinking,โ€ Matthew muttered.

A lump formed in my throat. Hayden must have noticed; he squeezed my hand, reassuring me.

We were spending the day with Yuna for her pre-surgery exams. A heart donor had been found, and despite the exhausting tests, Yuna was radiant, liberated. Her mood was infectious; Hayden and I couldnโ€™t help but smile more.

Of course, fate intervened; we ran into Matthew again while Yuna was having her heart checked. My little white lie was exposed, but nobody seemed to mind, given the circumstances.

Leaving after Yunaโ€™s check-up, she asked, โ€œKeira, were those your relatives?โ€

โ€œMy foster parents,โ€ I said, giving Matthew and Lindey new identities in Yunaโ€™s eyes.

โ€œAnd that tall guyโ€”their son?โ€ Yuna pressed.

I smirked. โ€œThink heโ€™s cute? Interested?โ€

Yuna shook her head. โ€œNo, but he kept staring. His expression wasโ€ฆ weird.โ€

I laughed. โ€œYouโ€™re so nosy! You were watching him closely, huh?โ€

โ€œI have to keep an eye on Hayden,โ€ Yuna said with a playful grin. โ€œWhat if another guy tries to steal you?โ€

She was adorable.

Hayden gently tapped her head. โ€œAnd what would you do? Think you could stop him?โ€

โ€œOf course,โ€ Yuna puffed out her chest. โ€œIโ€™d tell him Keiraโ€™s my brotherโ€™s girl, and heโ€™d need my approval first.โ€

Hayden and I burst out laughing. Yuna, pleased, looked proud. But her face soon grew serious again.

โ€œKeira, do your foster parents have other kids?โ€ she asked.
