Chapter 335

โ€œKeira, youโ€™re really clingy with Hayden,โ€ Yuna teased, a playful smirk on her face. I felt awkward, but she added, โ€œBut I really like it.โ€

โ€œYou little brat,โ€ I retorted, feigning a glare. She giggled.

I left her hospital room and looked down the hall. It was empty. Hayden must have found a quieter place to take his call. I headed toward the stairwell.

As I approached, I overheard Haydenโ€™s voice: โ€œThe shopโ€™s gone, but the mechanics should still be around. Track them downโ€ฆ Yes, itโ€™s necessary. I need to give Keira an answer, and clear my dadโ€™s name.โ€

My chest tightened. Iโ€™d been considering reopening the investigation into the brake failure that caused the accident. I hadnโ€™t told Hayden, but it seemed heโ€™d already started his own inquiry.

His call ended, but before I could approach, his phone rang again. I paused. The stairwell door was ajar, and I saw Hayden holding a cigarette. โ€œYeah, Iโ€™m back. Sheโ€™s hereโ€ฆ What, canโ€™t handle things without us? Relax. Donโ€™t come; itโ€™d blow the coverโ€ฆ Yeah, Iโ€™m still working on the code.โ€

I knew he was talking to Ron. The way Hayden spoke made it clear who was truly in charge: Hayden. A rich guy with the last name โ€˜Hartโ€™โ€ฆ I felt deceived. But Hayden swore he wouldnโ€™t lie to me. Why would he keep this from me?

As he finished his calls, Hayden saw me waiting. He approached, his voice gentle. โ€œWhat are you doing out here?โ€

โ€œI was looking for you,โ€ I lied, โ€œbut I couldnโ€™t find you.โ€

โ€œI was on the phone,โ€ he said, his eyes searching mine. โ€œHowโ€™s Mr. Johnston?โ€

โ€œLung cancer,โ€ I replied, the words catching in my throat. We both knew what that meant. Money couldn't change the outcome. A colleague, only thirty-three, had died from it in less than a hundred days.

Even though Matthew wasnโ€™t my father, heโ€™d treated me like his own for a decade. I wasnโ€™t ready to lose him.

Hayden sensed my distress and pulled me into a hug. โ€œMedicineโ€™s come a long way. Thereโ€™s still hope. Cancer treatments have improved.โ€

Chapter 305

I rested my head on his shoulder. โ€œIโ€™m so scared of losing people right nowโ€ฆ It feels like they just keep slipping away.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s lifeโ€”loss and renewal,โ€ Hayden murmured, stroking my hair.

โ€œNow I get why youโ€™ve been scared for Yunaโ€™s surgery. Iโ€™mโ€ฆ Iโ€™m feeling the same fear.โ€ My voice faltered. I didnโ€™t need to say more. Hayden understood.

He kissed my head. โ€œSheโ€™s strong, and we love her. Sheโ€™ll make it through.โ€

I hoped so, more than anything. I closed my eyes and prayed silently.

As we stood there, a soft cough caught my attention. I opened my eyes and saw Lena nearby. She winked at me. โ€œMr. Hart, Professor Neumann is looking for you.โ€

Hayden released me, but I held his hand for a moment. Nate was probably about to confirm Yunaโ€™s surgery details. Hayden didnโ€™t need me to say anything. He gave me a reassuring look before leaving to find Nate.

Lena approached, her expression serious, a stark contrast to her usual joking demeanor. โ€œYunaโ€™s surgery might not happenโ€ฆโ€
