Chapter 371

โ€œTake the main seats,โ€ Ron waved for Hayden and me to sit. He didnโ€™t look like our deputy CEO; more like a man trying too hard to be relaxed. Honestly, if Hayden weren't the company's true power, I doubted Ron would be so chummy.

โ€œMr. Shane,โ€ I began, raising an eyebrow, โ€œyouโ€™re the boss. Weโ€™re employees. Isnโ€™t thisโ€ฆ excessive?โ€

Ron paused, glancing at Hayden before offering a casual smile. โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong with being friendly? Weโ€™re colleagues, like family.โ€

I chuckled. โ€œYes, but youโ€™re still the boss. This feelsโ€ฆ odd.โ€

โ€œMr. Shane, really, you donโ€™t need to be so polite. We wonโ€™t enjoy the meal like this,โ€ Hayden added.

Ron dismissed him with a wave. โ€œDonโ€™t overthink it. Thatโ€™s my styleโ€”no formalities, no drama. Right, Mr. Hart?โ€

โ€œPerhaps too informal,โ€ Hayden replied succinctly.

The contrast between them was amusing. Ron was excessively casual, while Hayden maintained a commanding presence, even though Ron was ostensibly in charge.

Ron chuckled, but his phone buzzed. He checked it, stood, and said, โ€œExcuse me. I need to fetch someone.โ€

I blinked. โ€œWaitโ€”did you invite someone else?โ€

โ€œYep. Someone youโ€™ve been wanting to meet.โ€ Ron winked, doing so with unmistakable intent, sending a jolt through me.

Before I could react, Hayden cleared his throat. โ€œFeeling alright, Mr. Shane? Need some eye drops?โ€

I bit my lip to stifle my laughter.

Ron caught on, shaking his head with a smile. โ€œNo need to get territorial.โ€

Hayden didnโ€™t flinch. โ€œWhen it comes to my girl, Iโ€™m not generous.โ€

Ron sighed dramatically, gave a thumbs-up, and left.

As soon as the door closed, I turned to Hayden. โ€œSo, dinner with a mystery guest?โ€

โ€œYes. And when the food arrives, order whatever you like,โ€ Hayden said casually, then poured me waterโ€”in a wine glass.

I wrinkled my nose. โ€œWhy water?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re still recovering. No alcohol,โ€ he stated matter-of-factly.

I pouted. โ€œAnd if I really want a drink?โ€

I wasnโ€™t serious; I just wanted to test him. He hesitated, then sighed. โ€œFine. A little, just to taste.โ€

I burst out laughing.

Hayden, puzzled, asked, โ€œWhatโ€™s so funny?โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t want me drinking, so why pretend to relent?โ€

He pressed his lips together, stood, and moved behind me. Leaning down, he picked up the glass and placed it before me. His arm brushed mine as his lips neared my ear. โ€œBecause I donโ€™t want you upset.โ€

His breath on my ear was too warm, and those wordsโ€ฆ deeply affecting. It had been a long time since someone treated me so well, spoiling me without hesitation.

I reached up, hooked my arm around his neck, and pulled him down for a soft kiss. Hayden remained still at first, so I deepened the kiss, teasing him slightly. And, of course, just as I was truly enjoying it, the door to the private room burst openโ€”
