Chapter 387

I glimpsed Retta; her face was tight with jealousy, fists clenched. Envy radiated from her, mirroring the tightness in my chest. Before I could think, I blurted, "Professor Roane."

Retta snapped to attention. Her voice, icy and robotic, announced, "The patient will be moved to recovery in thirty minutes." She turned and walked away, frustration practically palpable.

I nudged Hayden, whispering, "She's jealous."

Relieved about Yuna, Hayden squeezed my hand. "Yeah, Professor Neumann handled that perfectly."

Wait, what?

I blinked, looking between Nate, still embracing Lena, and Hayden, who simply nodded knowingly. It hit me thenโ€”Nate's public display of affection wasn't just about Lena; it was a pointed message to Retta, who clearly harbored feelings for him, establishing boundaries while reassuring Lena. Hayden didn't need to explain; sometimes men understand each other in ways we miss.

"Mr. Hart," Nate began, resuming his professional demeanor, "during the operation, your sister lost significant blood. We performed two transfusions. She'll be in recovery for close observation; the first seventy-eight hours are critical for monitoring rejection. A nurse will provide constant care."

That's the professionalism one expects from an expert. Though prepared for the risks, Nate's words still tightened our stomachs. "What if rejection happens?" I asked, my voice shaky.

"We have a detailed plan," Nate said, calm and confident. "Don't worryโ€”we're prepared."

His composure eased our anxieties.

"Thank you, Professor Neumann," Hayden said gratefully.

Nate turned, meeting Lena's gaze with a soft smile. "You're Lena's friends. No need for formality."

Lena, usually bold and fiery, was suddenly subdued beside Nate. Love's softening power was striking.

I teased, "Lena, why don't you help Professor Neumann rest? We'll wait in recovery."

Lena smiled, a gentler smile. "He doesn't get to rest. The real work starts now with post-op care." She lightly nudged Nate. "Go on, get back to it. We'll catch up at dinner."

Nate nodded. As Lena left, she winked playfully.

Hayden and I, alone, glanced at the OR, then at each other. Hours of anxious waiting had drained us; only we truly understood the exhaustion. Finally, we could breathe.

"Come here," I said, opening my arms.

Hayden embraced me tightlyโ€”far more affectionately than Nate had embraced Lena. His hug was warm and intense, releasing the tension of the past six hours. He kissed my head, comforting me and finding his own release. I held him close, feeling the tension in my chest ease.

"Alright, let's go wait for Yuna," I said quietly, pulling back.

But somethingโ€”or someoneโ€”caught my eye. Wade.

What the hell? He was still here? Had he been waiting this entire time? Was he seriously trying to replace Narelle?

The thought enraged me.
