Chapter 430

The baby was born prematurelyโ€”seven and a half months. He lay in the incubator, nearly translucent. Just looking at him made my heart ache. Lena couldnโ€™t say if the baby would make it. It was all up to fate now.

Tanya didnโ€™t actually succeed in jumping, but her baby sure paid the price. And she didnโ€™t get out unscathed either. Her uterus ruptured, she bled out like crazy, and they had to do an emergency hysterectomy just to keep her alive. Barely. She was lucky to be alive.

Honestly, I didnโ€™t care about her anymore. But the babyโ€ฆ that poor kid. Desmondโ€™s parents didnโ€™t even acknowledge him, and now he was fatherless. With Tanya as his mom? Yeah, the future wasnโ€™t looking too bright. If she cared even a little, she wouldnโ€™t have kept putting him at risk with her wild decisions.

When Hayden showed up at the hospital to get me, he lookedโ€ฆ furious. Lena bumped me with her shoulder. โ€œUh-oh, your manโ€™s pissed.โ€

Yeah, I saw it. โ€œYouโ€™re still tangled up in this Jace mess,โ€ Lena muttered. โ€œOf course heโ€™s upset.โ€

I opened my mouth to explain, but Hayden was already at my side, staring at me in total silence. It felt like the air between us had thickened, dropping the temperature a good ten degrees. Hayden, who was always calm and chill, now looked at me like he didnโ€™t even know what to say. Iโ€™d never seen him like this before.

And okay, I knew itโ€”I was fine, but today couldโ€™ve gone bad. Really bad. I couldโ€™ve been the one in that hospital bed.

I stepped closer. โ€œIโ€™m okay. Nothing happened.โ€

Still, nothing from him. I reached for his hand. โ€œI swear, Iโ€™m done with their drama. For good this time.โ€ Lena cleared her throat, stepping in with her usual sass. โ€œHey, Hayden? Your girlโ€™s had a day. Maybe ditch the silent treatment and give her a hug, yeah?โ€

Hayden didnโ€™t pull me in like she suggested. Instead, he turned to Lena. โ€œYou sure sheโ€™s okay?โ€

โ€œPositive. Iโ€™d stake my whole career on it,โ€ Lena winked at me. She always had my backโ€”my best friend through and through.

Hayden just stared at her, then finally turned back to me. โ€œThis is the last time.โ€

โ€œYes, sir!โ€ I teased, grinning as I wrapped my arms around him. He rested his hand gently on my head, and all the tension finally melted away. Relief, fear, and this raw vulnerability that made my eyes sting.

Suddenly, I felt everything. I pressed my face into his chest, letting his warmth surround me. Way tooโ€ฆ

โ€œIโ€™ll leave you guys to it,โ€ Lena said, steppingโ€ฆ

But then she stopped, her expression turning serious. โ€œActually, thereโ€™s something you both should know.โ€

Still wrapped up in Hayden, I glanced at her. โ€œWhatโ€™s up?โ€

She shoved her hands into her pockets. โ€œNateโ€™s leaving.โ€

I blinked, totally thrown. โ€œWait, what?โ€

Lena shrugged, trying to play it off like it was no big deal. โ€œYep. Heโ€™s moving away.โ€

โ€œBut what about you guys?โ€ I asked, not getting how she could be so chill. They just started dating!

โ€œIโ€™ll be fine,โ€ Lena said, managing a small smile. โ€œYou know me.โ€

โ€œLena, youโ€™re in a relationship now.โ€

โ€œYeah, and work is work. Theyโ€™re separate,โ€ she said, her tone all matter-of-fact, but I could tell this was harder than she let on. Long-distance wasnโ€™t easy for anyone.

โ€œWhenโ€™s he leaving?โ€ Hayden asked, cutting into the conversation.

โ€œDay after tomorrow, early. So if youโ€™ve got any concerns about Yunaโ€™s recovery, better talk to him soon,โ€ Lena reminded us.

Hayden and I exchanged a look, both of us feeling the weight of that news. Then he turned back to Lena. โ€œTomorrow night, we want to take you and Professor Neumann out to dinner.โ€

I quickly added, โ€œAs friends, of course.โ€
