Chapter 44

โ€œMessed up? How bad can it be?โ€ I thought.

Staying calm, I asked, โ€œOkay, slow down. Whatโ€™s going on?โ€

Demi explained that the parkโ€™s lighting didnโ€™t match the design specifications. The problem stemmed either from faulty lights or a flawed installation.

โ€œLook, you know who to call to fix it. Even if I were there, thatโ€™s all Iโ€™d do,โ€ I replied, maintaining a calm tone.

โ€œKeira, please come back. I canโ€™t handle this alone. And I donโ€™t know whatโ€™s gotten into Mr. Johnston lately. Heโ€™s been coming to the amusement park every day, and every time he leaves, there are more problems. Iโ€™m about to lose my mind,โ€ Demiโ€™s voice cracked.

Considering Jaceโ€™s message, I wondered if he was deliberately creating problems for Demi to pressure me. After all these years, he knew me wellโ€”my soft heart and inability to bear seeing others suffer because of me.

โ€œHandle it for now,โ€ I said, still hesitant to return.

It wasnโ€™t heartlessness; I wanted Demi to step up and take on more responsibility. Growth comes from learning and overcoming challenges. I was considering leaving the company, creating a promotion opportunity for her. She needed to be ready.

โ€œKeira, I canโ€™t deal with this by myself. The lighting is the heart of the whole amusement park,โ€ Demi pleaded.

After a momentโ€™s thought, I said, โ€œSend me a detailed report. When youโ€™re on-site, call me. Itโ€™d be best to turn on all the lights at night so I can see whatโ€™s going on.โ€

Demi seemed to understand I wasnโ€™t coming back. โ€œKeira, I know you donโ€™t want to face Mr. Johnston right now. If it wasnโ€™t absolutely necessary, I wouldnโ€™t be asking.โ€

She paused. โ€œIโ€™ve got your back.โ€

Those words warmed my heart, though a hint of sadness lingered.

โ€œJust follow my instructions for now,โ€ I said, hanging up. I then opened my email to review the amusement parkโ€™s lighting design plans and renderings.

That night, Demi video-called. โ€œKeira, Iโ€™m at the site. All the lights are on. How do you want to check it out?โ€

I could only see parts of the lighting on the video. โ€œHead to the highest point in the park. I need to see the overall effect first. Then, get aerial shots of each attractionโ€™s lighting, especially the areas we had issues with.โ€

โ€œOkay, hold on,โ€ Demi said. The video wobbled, and I heard her running.

She suddenly stopped. โ€œMr. Johnston, what brings you here?โ€

Jaceโ€™s cool voice cut through, โ€œWhy are you running?โ€

My grip tightened, my heart racing. Even with the scars he left, a decade of feelings couldnโ€™t vanish overnight. Jace, even his voice, still affected me.

I wondered if Demi would mention she was talking to me. What would Jace say? Would he grab the phone?

โ€œI need to find a high spot to shoot some videos,โ€ Demi told Jace.

Jace paused, then simply said, โ€œOkay.โ€ I heard his footsteps fade.

โ€œKeira, I didnโ€™t tell him it was you. I was worried he might want to talk to you. I figured you wouldnโ€™t want that,โ€ Demi said thoughtfully.

I chuckled self-deprecatingly. โ€œYou nailed it.โ€

โ€œHehe, I knew youโ€™d think that way. Iโ€™d feel the same in your shoes,โ€ Demi said as she continued running and boarded the Ferris wheel.

Demi had taken video from the highest point. The amusement park was lit, but the base color was entirely different from the design plan. Originally, the lights were to be a gradient of blue, like the ocean at night turning into dawn. Now, it was a solid, deep blue. The color was rich, but lacked soul.

โ€œDemi, this is the overall view. Any idea if itโ€™s a construction issue or a problem with the lighting supplier?โ€ I asked. โ€œHave you talked to both parties? What did they say?โ€

โ€œThe construction team insists they followed the specs, and the manufacturer says the lights meet our requirements. No oneโ€™s admitting fault, so Iโ€™m totally clueless,โ€ Demi said, frustrated.

โ€œKeira, please come back. I canโ€™t handle this alone, and I know you donโ€™t want this kind of mess for something youโ€™ve put so much effort into,โ€ Demi pleaded.

โ€œOkay, Iโ€™ll come back,โ€ I agreed without hesitation.

After ending the call, I booked a flight. Soon after, Demi sent detailed aerial footage; the problems were serious.

Early the next morning, I packed for my nine oโ€™clock flight.

โ€œKeira, youโ€™re up so early. Yoga again?โ€ Macy asked.

For the past few days, Iโ€™d been practicing yoga in the yard, and Macy always warned me not to hurt myself.

โ€œNo, Iโ€™m leaving,โ€ I said, approaching her.

Macy was stunned. โ€œBut you said youโ€™d stay longer.โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s a problem with a project I need to handle. Once itโ€™s sorted out, I might come back to visit,โ€ I said, making no promises. Iโ€™d be leaving Jaceโ€™s company, but still needed to work.

โ€œGo ahead, everyone leaves eventually. Except for me, who canโ€™t go anywhere,โ€ she said, her words striking me.

A bold idea sparked. โ€œWhy donโ€™t you come with me?โ€

โ€œYou want to take me with you?โ€ Macy was surprised.

โ€œYeah, come see the bustling city of Seavora,โ€ I said, genuinely excited. Sheโ€™d started feeling like a grandmother to me.

Macy shook her head. โ€œI canโ€™t go. Iโ€™m too old, my legs are weak, and Iโ€™d only slow you down.โ€

โ€œYou wouldnโ€™t be a burden, Macy. Please, just for a few days,โ€ I begged, clutching her arm.

She gave me a soft look. โ€œThanks for thinking of me, but Iโ€™m staying here. If you ever have time, come back and visit.โ€

Her words stung my eyes. I hugged her tight. โ€œMacy, Iโ€™ll miss you.โ€

โ€œMiss me? You should be thinking about Hayden. Heโ€™s such a good guy, and you drove him away,โ€ Macy said, breaking my sentimentality.

โ€œDid Hayden leave because I rejected him? Because I donโ€™t like him that way?โ€

Before I could answer, Macy patted my hand. โ€œKeira, Hayden is a good guy. Think it over.โ€

โ€œAlright,โ€ I agreed.
