Chapter 44
โMessed up? How bad can it be?โ I thought.
Staying calm, I asked, โOkay, slow down. Whatโs going on?โ
Demi explained that the parkโs lighting didnโt match the design specifications. The problem stemmed either from faulty lights or a flawed installation.
โLook, you know who to call to fix it. Even if I were there, thatโs all Iโd do,โ I replied, maintaining a calm tone.
โKeira, please come back. I canโt handle this alone. And I donโt know whatโs gotten into Mr. Johnston lately. Heโs been coming to the amusement park every day, and every time he leaves, there are more problems. Iโm about to lose my mind,โ Demiโs voice cracked.
Considering Jaceโs message, I wondered if he was deliberately creating problems for Demi to pressure me. After all these years, he knew me wellโmy soft heart and inability to bear seeing others suffer because of me.
โHandle it for now,โ I said, still hesitant to return.
It wasnโt heartlessness; I wanted Demi to step up and take on more responsibility. Growth comes from learning and overcoming challenges. I was considering leaving the company, creating a promotion opportunity for her. She needed to be ready.
โKeira, I canโt deal with this by myself. The lighting is the heart of the whole amusement park,โ Demi pleaded.
After a momentโs thought, I said, โSend me a detailed report. When youโre on-site, call me. Itโd be best to turn on all the lights at night so I can see whatโs going on.โ
Demi seemed to understand I wasnโt coming back. โKeira, I know you donโt want to face Mr. Johnston right now. If it wasnโt absolutely necessary, I wouldnโt be asking.โ
She paused. โIโve got your back.โ
Those words warmed my heart, though a hint of sadness lingered.
โJust follow my instructions for now,โ I said, hanging up. I then opened my email to review the amusement parkโs lighting design plans and renderings.
That night, Demi video-called. โKeira, Iโm at the site. All the lights are on. How do you want to check it out?โ
I could only see parts of the lighting on the video. โHead to the highest point in the park. I need to see the overall effect first. Then, get aerial shots of each attractionโs lighting, especially the areas we had issues with.โ
โOkay, hold on,โ Demi said. The video wobbled, and I heard her running.
She suddenly stopped. โMr. Johnston, what brings you here?โ
Jaceโs cool voice cut through, โWhy are you running?โ
My grip tightened, my heart racing. Even with the scars he left, a decade of feelings couldnโt vanish overnight. Jace, even his voice, still affected me.
I wondered if Demi would mention she was talking to me. What would Jace say? Would he grab the phone?
โI need to find a high spot to shoot some videos,โ Demi told Jace.
Jace paused, then simply said, โOkay.โ I heard his footsteps fade.
โKeira, I didnโt tell him it was you. I was worried he might want to talk to you. I figured you wouldnโt want that,โ Demi said thoughtfully.
I chuckled self-deprecatingly. โYou nailed it.โ
โHehe, I knew youโd think that way. Iโd feel the same in your shoes,โ Demi said as she continued running and boarded the Ferris wheel.
Demi had taken video from the highest point. The amusement park was lit, but the base color was entirely different from the design plan. Originally, the lights were to be a gradient of blue, like the ocean at night turning into dawn. Now, it was a solid, deep blue. The color was rich, but lacked soul.
โDemi, this is the overall view. Any idea if itโs a construction issue or a problem with the lighting supplier?โ I asked. โHave you talked to both parties? What did they say?โ
โThe construction team insists they followed the specs, and the manufacturer says the lights meet our requirements. No oneโs admitting fault, so Iโm totally clueless,โ Demi said, frustrated.
โKeira, please come back. I canโt handle this alone, and I know you donโt want this kind of mess for something youโve put so much effort into,โ Demi pleaded.
โOkay, Iโll come back,โ I agreed without hesitation.
After ending the call, I booked a flight. Soon after, Demi sent detailed aerial footage; the problems were serious.
Early the next morning, I packed for my nine oโclock flight.
โKeira, youโre up so early. Yoga again?โ Macy asked.
For the past few days, Iโd been practicing yoga in the yard, and Macy always warned me not to hurt myself.
โNo, Iโm leaving,โ I said, approaching her.
Macy was stunned. โBut you said youโd stay longer.โ
โThereโs a problem with a project I need to handle. Once itโs sorted out, I might come back to visit,โ I said, making no promises. Iโd be leaving Jaceโs company, but still needed to work.
โGo ahead, everyone leaves eventually. Except for me, who canโt go anywhere,โ she said, her words striking me.
A bold idea sparked. โWhy donโt you come with me?โ
โYou want to take me with you?โ Macy was surprised.
โYeah, come see the bustling city of Seavora,โ I said, genuinely excited. Sheโd started feeling like a grandmother to me.
Macy shook her head. โI canโt go. Iโm too old, my legs are weak, and Iโd only slow you down.โ
โYou wouldnโt be a burden, Macy. Please, just for a few days,โ I begged, clutching her arm.
She gave me a soft look. โThanks for thinking of me, but Iโm staying here. If you ever have time, come back and visit.โ
Her words stung my eyes. I hugged her tight. โMacy, Iโll miss you.โ
โMiss me? You should be thinking about Hayden. Heโs such a good guy, and you drove him away,โ Macy said, breaking my sentimentality.
โDid Hayden leave because I rejected him? Because I donโt like him that way?โ
Before I could answer, Macy patted my hand. โKeira, Hayden is a good guy. Think it over.โ
โAlright,โ I agreed.
