Chapter 441

โ€œLenaโ€”โ€ I started. But before I could say more, she cut me off. โ€œDo you think I can still catch Nate if I chase after him now?โ€

She definitely shouldnโ€™t, even if she had a shot. She couldnโ€™t go back to work yet, but she also couldnโ€™t just leave Kehlmark while the investigation was ongoing.

โ€œDonโ€™t overthink it. Tanyaโ€™s just lashing out, like a cornered animal.โ€ Lena paused, then added, โ€œHonestly, we should be the ones recommending her for a psych evaluation.โ€

Her attempt to lighten the mood didnโ€™t work for me. She flicked her fingers against my forehead, reading my mind. โ€œStop. This isnโ€™t your fault.โ€

How could it not be? Tanyaโ€™s whole problem with Lena was totally because of me. Plus, Iโ€™m the one who called Lena in when Tanyaโ€™s condition got worse. If I hadnโ€™t called her, Lena might not have even been the one to do the surgery.

โ€œFault or not, I still have to deal with her,โ€ I said, already moving toward Tanyaโ€™s room.

Lena grabbed my arm. โ€œIf you go in now, sheโ€™ll think sheโ€™s winning. You know sheโ€™ll make even crazier demands.โ€

โ€œLet her. I wanna see how far she thinks she can push this.โ€ I could feel the anger rising in my chest. Tanya was like one of those snakes you try to help, and it bites you anyway.

Lena knew me well enough to recognize that look. โ€œFine, but keep your head on straight. Donโ€™t let her get to you.โ€

โ€œAnd you?โ€ I asked.

โ€œIโ€™m heading to the directorโ€™s office to explain everything.โ€

I swallowed down the burning in my throat. โ€œWeโ€™ll catch up later.โ€

โ€œKeep it together. Justโ€ฆ donโ€™t do anything dumb. If you lose it, youโ€™re playing right into her hands,โ€ Lena warned.

I nodded. โ€œI wonโ€™t. Sheโ€™s leaving empty-handed.โ€

We split up at the doors, Lena heading for the directorโ€™s office while I made my way to the OB-GYN wing. Right as I walked in, I ran smack into Brad.

He stopped dead when he saw me, his usual cocky smirk nowhere to be found. Looks like Wayne had a little talk with him. At least now he knew better than to mess with me.

โ€œSo polite today,โ€ I teased, flipping the script.

โ€œDonโ€™t start,โ€ Brad shot back.

Watching him try to dodge me like I was some kind of curse, I crooked my finger at him. โ€œCome here. Iโ€™ve got a question for you.โ€

Brad swallowed nervously. โ€œI was out of line before, okay? It wonโ€™t happen again. Can we just let it go?โ€

It was actually kind of cute, seeing him so nervous. I stepped closer, and he immediately sidestepped, like he was ready to make a run for it.

โ€œStop right there. If you try to run, Iโ€™m calling Wayne and telling him youโ€™re up to no good again,โ€ I warned, watching his eyes widen in panic.

โ€œYouโ€™re so full of it,โ€ he muttered, finally losing his cool.

I grinned. โ€œGuess I learned from the best.โ€

Brad gave me a wary look, keeping his distance like I might pull something at any second. His reaction made me laugh. I leaned in just to mess with him. โ€œWhat? Youโ€™re that scared of me?โ€

We both knew it wasnโ€™t me he was afraid ofโ€”it was Wayne. That only made me more curious. I gestured for him to come closer. โ€œSo, spill. What did Wayne do to you that turned you from a big bad wolf into a little puppy?โ€
