Chapter 441
โLenaโโ I started. But before I could say more, she cut me off. โDo you think I can still catch Nate if I chase after him now?โ
She definitely shouldnโt, even if she had a shot. She couldnโt go back to work yet, but she also couldnโt just leave Kehlmark while the investigation was ongoing.
โDonโt overthink it. Tanyaโs just lashing out, like a cornered animal.โ Lena paused, then added, โHonestly, we should be the ones recommending her for a psych evaluation.โ
Her attempt to lighten the mood didnโt work for me. She flicked her fingers against my forehead, reading my mind. โStop. This isnโt your fault.โ
How could it not be? Tanyaโs whole problem with Lena was totally because of me. Plus, Iโm the one who called Lena in when Tanyaโs condition got worse. If I hadnโt called her, Lena might not have even been the one to do the surgery.
โFault or not, I still have to deal with her,โ I said, already moving toward Tanyaโs room.
Lena grabbed my arm. โIf you go in now, sheโll think sheโs winning. You know sheโll make even crazier demands.โ
โLet her. I wanna see how far she thinks she can push this.โ I could feel the anger rising in my chest. Tanya was like one of those snakes you try to help, and it bites you anyway.
Lena knew me well enough to recognize that look. โFine, but keep your head on straight. Donโt let her get to you.โ
โAnd you?โ I asked.
โIโm heading to the directorโs office to explain everything.โ
I swallowed down the burning in my throat. โWeโll catch up later.โ
โKeep it together. Justโฆ donโt do anything dumb. If you lose it, youโre playing right into her hands,โ Lena warned.
I nodded. โI wonโt. Sheโs leaving empty-handed.โ
We split up at the doors, Lena heading for the directorโs office while I made my way to the OB-GYN wing. Right as I walked in, I ran smack into Brad.
He stopped dead when he saw me, his usual cocky smirk nowhere to be found. Looks like Wayne had a little talk with him. At least now he knew better than to mess with me.
โSo polite today,โ I teased, flipping the script.
โDonโt start,โ Brad shot back.
Watching him try to dodge me like I was some kind of curse, I crooked my finger at him. โCome here. Iโve got a question for you.โ
Brad swallowed nervously. โI was out of line before, okay? It wonโt happen again. Can we just let it go?โ
It was actually kind of cute, seeing him so nervous. I stepped closer, and he immediately sidestepped, like he was ready to make a run for it.
โStop right there. If you try to run, Iโm calling Wayne and telling him youโre up to no good again,โ I warned, watching his eyes widen in panic.
โYouโre so full of it,โ he muttered, finally losing his cool.
I grinned. โGuess I learned from the best.โ
Brad gave me a wary look, keeping his distance like I might pull something at any second. His reaction made me laugh. I leaned in just to mess with him. โWhat? Youโre that scared of me?โ
We both knew it wasnโt me he was afraid ofโit was Wayne. That only made me more curious. I gestured for him to come closer. โSo, spill. What did Wayne do to you that turned you from a big bad wolf into a little puppy?โ
