Chapter 448
So, Tanya wanted to drag me down with her, huh? Classic. This was the same woman who used her husbandโs death to climb the ladder, so of course sheโd try to use someone else. She wasnโt bluffing. I knew sheโd do exactly what she said. Iโd have to keep my guard up around her.
I leaned in, locking eyes with her. โAlright, letโs see who crashes and burns first.โ Then, with a swift kick to her hand, I turned and strode out.
As I reached the door, I couldnโt help thinking about the baby she caused to be born early with all her drama, so I said, โOh, and Tanya? If youโve got even a shred of decency left, maybe take a look at the kid you brought into this world. At least let him know who his mom really is.โ
She froze, and I turned away, leaving without another word. I headed straight to Lenaโs break room to wait for her. Ten minutes later, she finally showed up.
โYouโre still here?โ she grinned. โDidnโt think youโd actually wait for me.โ
I gave her a look. โCut the act. What did your director say?โ
Lena shrugged, grabbing a cup and filling it with water. โNothing major. Just told me to file a report and cooperate with the investigation.โ She took a sip, then smirked. โSo, howโd your little face-off with Tanya go?โ
I didnโt answer right away, still thinking about Rettaโs involvement. โWhy do you think Tanyaโs after you, anyway?โ
Lena handed me a cup. โSheโs just a mad dog biting anyone who gets close.โ
Yeah, sure. Lena was totally trying to make it seem like it wasnโt my fault.
โOkay, but why you?โ I pushed, wanting her to dig a little deeper.
Lena sipped her water. โSheโs using me to get at you?โ
โAnd maybe thereโs another reason too?โ I nudged.
Lena frowned, realizing something wasnโt right. โAlright, what are you getting at? Or did Tanya say something?โ
โTanyaโs gunning to wreck your career. Sure, it might be part of her revenge on me, but doesnโt it seemโฆ I donโt knowโฆ a little too indirect?โ
She put her cup down on the table. โAlright, just spill. What do you know?โ
I hesitated for a second. โI saw Tanyaโs call history. She had a late-night call with Retta.โ
It hit Lena instantly. Last night, while she and Nate were having their moment, Retta mustโve been next door fuming. Thatโs probably when she reached out to Tanya and cooked up this whole scheme.

Lena blinked, then burst into laughter. Wait, why was she laughing? Shouldnโt she be mad?
I picked up the pen from the table and tapped her with it. โWhatโs so funny?โ
โItโs just hilarious how even smart women lose their minds over a guy. Seriously,โ she said, shaking her head.
โRettaโs already made her move. How are you so chill? Shouldnโt you be freaking out?โ
Lena drummed her fingers on the table. โSheโs going to try hitting me professionally first, then sheโll go after Nate. Textbook strategy.โ
I thought about Retta walking off with Nate earlier. โSheโs definitely in the perfect position to pull that off. And letโs be real, Nate can be a bit clueless sometimes; Rettaโs tricks might actually work on him.โ
Lena stayed calm, her smile never fading. โRetta didnโt expect this trip home to be such a disaster. She probably regrets not locking Nate down earlier. Thatโs why sheโs desperate enough to team up with Tanya.โ
I had to hand it to herโLena always had nerves of steel, even when things got messy. But Retta was targeting her, and she needed a plan to deal with it. But this was her fight now. โSo, whatโs your plan? Rettaโs already playing dirty.โ
Lena gave me a sly grin, a wink to top it off. โIโm just gonna let her bury herself.โ
I paused, catching on. โWait, youโre thinking ofโฆ chasing Nate down?โ
Lena pointed at me with her thumb, all confident. โYou know me too well, Keira. Weโve been through too much for you not to.โ
Lena took a long sip of water, her eyes gleaming with determination. โRetta thinks by keeping Nate close, sheโll pull the strings. Well, letโs see what happens when I donโt just get closeโI take the whole damn spotlight.โ
