Chapter 449

I caught on quick. โ€œAnd when you walk out, the directorโ€™s gonna freak. Youโ€™re Seavoraโ€™s top OB-GYNโ€”theyโ€™ll be begging you to stay.โ€

โ€œExactly. Iโ€™m hitting two birds with one stone. By the end of this mess, I might even snag the deputy director spot.โ€

Lenaโ€™s ambition wasnโ€™t off the chartsโ€”she was just gunning for deputy director.

I couldnโ€™t help but laugh. โ€œWhen life throws mud, you make a whole garden out of it.โ€

Lena shot a look at my phone and tilted her head toward it. โ€œUse that VIP status of yours and book me a flight.โ€

Classic Lena. She made a move, and the world would scramble to catch up.

I pulled out my phone and had her ticket booked before she even finished her water. Then I drove her home so she could pack.

As we pulled up to the airport, I raised an eyebrow. โ€œDidnโ€™t the director tell you to stay for the investigation?โ€

She just laughed. โ€œAnd youโ€™re only asking now? Does it even matter?โ€

I laughed too. โ€œSo, this was the plan all along?โ€

โ€œDuh. The whole surgeryโ€™s recordedโ€”thereโ€™s footage, plus all my conversations with the family. They can investigate all they want; they donโ€™t need me for anything. So, why should I stay?โ€

She had a point. Sticking around would just give her haters more to gossip about.

โ€œYouโ€™re not going to tell Nate youโ€™re coming? Heโ€™s gonna flip when you show up.โ€

She chuckled. โ€œSurprise inspection. Who knows what he and Retta have been up to behind my back?โ€

That caught me off guard. โ€œWait, you donโ€™t trust him?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not about trust,โ€ she said, pausing for a second. โ€œItโ€™s about human nature. No guyโ€™s immune to temptation.โ€

Thatโ€™s Lena for you. She might not have been through every heartbreak herself, but sheโ€™d seen enough on the job to know how people can be.

โ€œWell, good luck,โ€ I said, pulling her in for a hug before watching her head toward the gate.

As her plane took off, I headed for the exit, feeling a mix of pride and worry for my bestie.

And then, just my luck, I walked straight into Jace. Literally. There was no avoiding itโ€”he was right there, suitcase in hand.

He looked like he was heading out of town. Despite everything, we werenโ€™t enemies, so I went for casual. โ€œWhere are you off to?โ€

โ€œHouston.โ€

The city name made me pause for a secondโ€”was RiverwaveCorp expanding in the U.S. too? But then I brushed it off. Whatever. It wasnโ€™t my problem anymore.

โ€œOh,โ€ I replied, keeping it light.

He stared, clearly waiting for me to ask more. โ€œYouโ€™re not curious why?โ€

I shrugged. โ€œNot really.โ€

His expression darkened. โ€œSo you just donโ€™t care about me at all anymore, huh?โ€

Funny how when we were together, my questions annoyed him. Now, when I wasnโ€™t asking, he couldnโ€™t stand it.

Thatโ€™s just human nature, I guess.

I didnโ€™t bite. โ€œWhat timeโ€™s your flight?โ€

He ignored the question. โ€œIโ€™m going to see Steve.โ€

Steve? Right. His competition was coming up in Houston.

But it wasnโ€™t for another week. I figured Jace was just going early to help Steve prep, so I gave him a polite nod.

Then he dropped a bomb.

โ€œSteveโ€™s in trouble.โ€
