Chapter 450

My heart skipped a beat. โ€œWhat happened?โ€

Jaceโ€™s face darkened. โ€œHe got into a fight.โ€

A fight overseas, right before a major competition? That didnโ€™t sound like Steve. โ€œDid he ask you to come?โ€

Jace hesitated. โ€œHeโ€™s been detained.โ€

I blinked, stunned. โ€œThat serious?โ€

โ€œYeah, and if things donโ€™t go well, he could be facing long-term imprisonment.โ€ His words knocked the wind out of me for a second.

Seeing the worry on my face, Jace added, โ€œI donโ€™t know all the details yet. One of his teammates called. Iโ€™m heading over to figure things out.โ€

I nodded slightly. โ€œLet me know if anythingโ€”โ€

โ€œDo you want to come with me?โ€ Jace cut in, eyes locked on mine.

I wasnโ€™t expecting that. My mouth opened, but before I could answer, Jace continued, โ€œHis teammate said Steveโ€™s not doing well. Heโ€™s been really agitated. If youโ€™re there, maybe you could calm him down.โ€

Steve wasnโ€™t just a friendโ€”he was family. Someone whoโ€™d always had my back. Now he was in trouble, far from home, and of course, I wanted to help.

But going with Jace? That was a different story. I didnโ€™t want to do anything that could upset Hayden. There was a time when Jace didnโ€™t care about my feelings and hurt me by being with someone else. I couldnโ€™t do the same to Hayden.

โ€œYou go ahead. Iโ€™ll come later, after I pack,โ€ I said, turning down Jaceโ€™s offer.

โ€œYou can buy whatever you need when we get there,โ€ he replied, clearly missing the point.

Iโ€™d mentioned packing as a polite excuse, hoping heโ€™d take the hint. But instead, he pushed, making it obvious he wanted us to travel together.

I couldnโ€™t do that.

I was about to respond when Jace suddenly pulled out a red booklet from his bag. โ€œI brought your passport.โ€

I had totally forgotten about that. Before we broke up, Jace and I had taken a trip abroad, and my passport ended up in his bag. When things fell apart, I took everything else, but the passport slipped my mind.

I reached out to take it, but he didnโ€™t let go right away.

We stood there, locked in tense silence, until Jace finally spoke, his voice low. โ€œSo, we canโ€™t even go on a trip together anymore?โ€

I looked down, then back up at him with a soft smile. โ€œItโ€™s not that I canโ€™tโ€”itโ€™s that I donโ€™t want Hayden to overthink things. As his girlfriend, itโ€™s my responsibility to make sure he feels secure.โ€

My words hit him hard, and after a moment, he let go of the passport, his smile bitter. โ€œYou really care about him, huh?โ€

Obviously.

Jaceโ€™s expression soured even more. โ€œFunny, when we were together, you never cared this much about me.โ€

Was this his way of dredging up old grudges?

โ€œDid I?โ€ I asked, giving him a half-smile.

Jaceโ€™s eyes darkened. โ€œRea, you always thought I didnโ€™t care about you. But how much did you really care about me?โ€

That came out of nowhere. When didnโ€™t I care about him? Was this about Steve? Was there something between Steve and me that bothered him back then?

I didnโ€™t ask. There was no point. Weโ€™d gone our separate ways, and digging up the past wouldnโ€™t change anything.

โ€œIโ€™ll pack and head over soon. Weโ€™ll be in touch,โ€ I said, ending the conversation and walking away with my passport.

Hayden had told me to take some time off, but I still decided to swing by the office.

When I knocked on his door, he was deep in work, not even looking up as he said, โ€œCome in.โ€

I stood there for a moment, just watching him work. He was completely absorbed, totally lost in whatever he was doing. If anyone wanted to know what โ€œfocusedโ€ looked like, they only had to see Hayden in action.

Eventually, he reached for something on his desk, just out of his reach. I stepped forward and handed it to him.

โ€œThanks,โ€ he said, then paused, sensing something was off. He finally looked up.
