Chapter 456

I was sitting on the hotel balcony, staring out at the rain when Haydenโ€™s video call flashed on my screen. Thereโ€™s something about a foreign city that makes everything feel kind ofโ€ฆ lonely. Especially when itโ€™s pouring.

As I sat there, the conversation Iโ€™d overheard played on repeat in my head. And suddenly, Jaceโ€™s weird questions about Hayden made sense. Not to mention why Kylian had been acting so weird around him. Hayden wasnโ€™t just some regular guy. He was from that Hart family.

I thought he was just your average guy-next-door, and now it turns out he was some secret heir to a filthy rich, powerful family. Like, for real? What was this? Some undercover billionaire thing? Was he scared Iโ€™d stick around just because of his money?

A bitter laugh escaped me as I grabbed my phone, which had been buzzing nonstop at my feet. Haydenโ€™s face filled the screenโ€”handsome as ever. โ€œKiki, I can explain.โ€ He mustโ€™ve seen the call log. Of course, he knew I overheard everything.

โ€œExplain what?โ€ I curled my toes, pretending I didnโ€™t already know the whole deal.

โ€œI didnโ€™t mean to lie to you or hide anything,โ€ Hayden said, his voice full of sincerity.

I started tracing little circles on the window. โ€œEveryoneโ€™s got their reasons. You didnโ€™t have to tell meโ€”itโ€™s your call.โ€

โ€œKikiโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYou left me with Jace because you knew he had to work with your family, didnโ€™t you? He wouldnโ€™t dare mess with me because of you, right?โ€ I asked, half-whispering, not really expecting him to come clean.

โ€œItโ€™s not like thatโ€”โ€

โ€œSeriously, what kind of boyfriend lets their ex babysit their girlfriend?โ€ I muttered under my breath.

โ€œKikiโ€ฆโ€

โ€œRemember what I told you before? I hate being lied to.โ€ I blinked and realized Iโ€™d been doodling Haydenโ€™s name all over the fogged-up window. Oops.

โ€œI know, I wanted to tell youโ€ฆ but the timing never felt right,โ€ Hayden said, tension thick in his voice.

โ€œOh, so you were just waiting for the perfect moment, huh? Like, maybe after you officially rejoined the Hart family? Or were you never gonna say anything unless I overheard it today?โ€ The bitterness in my tone was undeniable.

Silence. Then finally, he answered. โ€œI never intended to rejoin the Hart family. Thatโ€™s why I didnโ€™t mention it.โ€

I blinked, totally thrown. Why didnโ€™t he want to go back to his family? But instead of asking, I forced myself to stay calm. โ€œItโ€™s fine, Hayden. You didnโ€™t have to tell me. Like you said, weโ€™re together, but weโ€™re still our own people.โ€

I knew I was twisting his words, but I couldnโ€™t stop. My heart felt all over the place.

He went quiet again before shifting gears. โ€œHave you been able to see Steve?โ€

I sighed, pushing my frustration aside. โ€œNo, Jace says heโ€™s still working on it.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll have someone set it up so you can see him tomorrow,โ€ Hayden said, catching me off guard.

I let out a dry laugh. Of course, with his connections, he could just make that happen. โ€œGuess itโ€™s handy having you around, after all.โ€

โ€œKikiโ€ฆ thereโ€™s something off about Steveโ€™s situation. When you meet him tomorrow as his โ€˜attorney,โ€™ there are some things you need to ask,โ€ Haydenโ€™s tone turned serious, pulling my attention back.

โ€œWhat do I need to ask?โ€

โ€œGet him to explain everything about the issues with Danilo and why he wouldnโ€™t cooperate. See if Steveโ€™s got any proof, and ask if anyoneโ€™s threatened him or tried to bribe him recently.โ€

My stomach flipped at his words. โ€œYou think Daniloโ€™s death is part of some setup?โ€

โ€œWe canโ€™t rule it out. Steve was a top contender for the championship. If something happened to him, itโ€™d clear the way for other competitors.โ€ Haydenโ€™s logic was sharp, and suddenly, it all started clicking.

โ€œMaybe someone tried to bribe him to throw a match, and when he wouldnโ€™t play along, they framed him,โ€ I said, my thoughts lining up with his.

โ€œExactly. Thatโ€™s why itโ€™s so important you get him to talk. The more we know, the easier itโ€™ll be to expose whoeverโ€™s behind this and clear his name.โ€
