Chapter 457

My chest tightened. โ€œAlright, what time tomorrow?โ€ I asked.

โ€œNot sure yet. Just keep your phone close,โ€ Hayden paused, then, more casually, โ€œHave you eaten?โ€

โ€œYeah, I ate with Jace,โ€ I replied, totally innocent, no hidden meaning behind it. There wasnโ€™t any reason for him to think otherwise. After all, heโ€™s the one who had Jace looking after me. Sure enough, Hayden didnโ€™t make a big deal of it. He just moved on. โ€œWhat did Jace say about Steve?โ€

โ€œHe said heโ€™s working on getting me in to see him, but nothing beyond that,โ€ I replied, keeping it simple.

โ€œJace knows Steveโ€™s teammates pretty well. He might be able to get some leads from them,โ€ Hayden added. I didnโ€™t say anything, and he didnโ€™t push it.

Silence settled between us. It felt strangeโ€”this had never happened during our calls before. I broke it, glancing out the window. โ€œItโ€™s raining here. Like, really hard.โ€

โ€œI can hear it,โ€ Hayden said, and thatโ€™s when I realized Iโ€™d had my phone facing up the whole time. He wasnโ€™t even looking at the rain or me, just the hotel ceiling.

โ€œHold on, let me show you.โ€ I tilted the phone toward the window.

โ€œIโ€™d rather see you,โ€ Hayden said softly, his voice direct.

I stayed quiet for a second before I teased, โ€œWell, you made me mad, so as your punishment, you donโ€™t get to see me until Iโ€™m back.โ€

There was another pause before he replied, โ€œYeahโ€ฆ I deserve that.โ€

Was it really a punishment? Maybe. I mean, he loved me, and when you love someone, even a day apart can feel like forever. Hayden didnโ€™t hang up. He just stayed on the line, listening to the rain with me. We didnโ€™t talk after that. Almost an hour passed, and my body started feeling stiff from sitting too long. I stretched out on the bed to relax. When I picked up my phone, I noticed the call was still going. He hadnโ€™t hung upโ€”and now the camera was facing him.

โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you end the call?โ€ I asked.

โ€œI didnโ€™t want to. Even if I canโ€™t see you, hearing your voice is enough,โ€ Hayden said, hitting me with that effortless rizz.

But I wasnโ€™t in the mood to get all soft. โ€œWell, Iโ€™m hanging up now. No more listening either.โ€

โ€œAre you tired?โ€ Hayden asked, gently.

โ€œNot really tired, justโ€ฆ exhausted,โ€ I said as I stretched out again. โ€œGoodnight.โ€

I ended the video call, but almost immediately, my phone buzzed again. Of course, it was Hayden. I unlocked it and saw the message: [Kiki, sleep well.]

I didnโ€™t bother replying. Instead, I locked my phone and shut my eyes. Not long after, it buzzed again. I figured it was another message from Hayden, so I ignored it.

The next morning, when I woke up and checked the time, I finally looked at the texts. The one Iโ€™d ignored wasnโ€™t from Haydenโ€”it was from Cedric: [Meet me tomorrow at 3 PM at your parentsโ€™ grave.]

My heart skipped a beat. I wasnโ€™t even in Kehlmarkโ€”how was I supposed to meet him? I quickly typed back: [Sorry, Officer Sawyer, Iโ€™m out of the country right now. Can we reschedule?]

No immediate response. My eyelid twitched as this weird feeling of unease settled over me. I couldnโ€™t send someone else to meet him. I couldnโ€™t blow it off, either. So, I tried again: [Iโ€™ll reach out as soon as Iโ€™m back. Is that okay?]

This time, the โ€œtypingโ€ indicator popped up almost immediately.
