Chapter 473

+25 BONUS

Iโ€™d only really taken a good look around this hospital room twiceโ€”once when I was searching for Hayden, and now, while trying to figure out what to pack. Wayne crouched in front of me, his voice soft. โ€œRea, how are you feeling? Any discomfort?โ€

I was about to shake my head when a knock interrupted us. Jace walked in with the doctor. โ€œLet the doctor check you over. If anything happens on the plane, itโ€™ll be hard to deal with,โ€ Jace said, his gaze briefly flicking to Wayne. I noticed the slight crease in his brow.

As the doctor moved closer, Wayne stood up and stepped aside, naturally giving him room. The doctor listened to my heartbeat, took my blood pressure, and ran through a full exam. โ€œYouโ€™re recovering well,โ€ he finally said. โ€œEverything looks normal.โ€

โ€œThank you, doctor,โ€ Jace said, sounding genuinely grateful.

Wayne chimed in, โ€œIโ€™ll walk the doctor out. I need to pack, too. Jace, stay and talk to Rea.โ€

The door clicked shut behind them, and just like that, it was me and Jace. Alone. Neither of us said a word. We just sat there, wrapped in silence. I stared into space, lost in thought, while Jaceโ€™s eyes stayed fixed on me.

After what felt like forever, he finally broke the quiet. โ€œIโ€™m sorry.โ€

I turned to him, knowing my eyes were distant, glazed over with everything that had happened. Jace sat down next to me. โ€œIf it werenโ€™t for me, you wouldnโ€™t have come to Houston. You wouldnโ€™t have been in danger.โ€

โ€œYou wouldnโ€™t have had to give so much blood to save meโ€ฆand Hayden wouldnโ€™t have misunderstood.โ€ I blinked, then lowered my eyes to the second button on his shirt. โ€œThereโ€™s no need to apologize. Isnโ€™t there that saying? Everything happens for a reason.โ€

Maybe this was fate.

โ€œRea,โ€ Jace said softly, โ€œwhy did you do it? Risk your life to save me?โ€

I didnโ€™t look up, just gave a small, bitter smile. โ€œBecause if I didnโ€™t, youโ€™d be dead.โ€

โ€œBut what about your life? Why didnโ€™t you think about yourself? I know what happenedโ€”if you hadnโ€™t given that last 200cc of blood, you wouldnโ€™t have collapsed.โ€

I flashed back to that moment, when Iโ€™d watched my blood fill the bag for him. I smiled again, but it didnโ€™t reach my eyes. โ€œIf youโ€™re gonna help someone, you might as well go all the way. Iโ€™d already given you so much, might as well finish it.โ€

โ€œIf I stopped halfway and you didnโ€™t make it, what was the point of the 600cc Iโ€™d already given?โ€

As soon as the words left my mouth, a thought crept in. I slowly lifted my eyes to meet his. โ€œDonโ€™t overthink it. Even if it hadnโ€™t been you that dayโ€”if it was a strangerโ€”I wouldโ€™ve done the same.โ€

Jaceโ€™s eyes narrowed a bit. โ€œReally? Even for a stranger?โ€

โ€œYes!โ€ I said, a little too quickly, a little too firmly.

I saw itโ€”the flash of disappointment in his eyes. I knew exactly why.

โ€œDonโ€™t feel guilty,โ€ I said, hoping to stop whatever spiral he was about to fall into. โ€œI saved you because we share the same blood type. Maybe thatโ€™s why Iโ€™m in your lifeโ€”to help when you need it. And we grew up together, shared meals, lived under the same roof. How could I just let you die?โ€

Jaceโ€™s lips curved into a sad smile. โ€œSince we split up, youโ€™ve built so many walls around yourself. You wonโ€™t even give me a sliver of hope anymore.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not possible between us now. If I let you hang on to hope, Iโ€™d be just as bad as you were back then.โ€

I didnโ€™t pull any punches. He needed to hear it. Only then could he understand that the hurt he felt now? Thatโ€™s what Iโ€™d gone through. I deserve it,โ€ Jace muttered, his voice rough. โ€œIโ€™ve already wronged you so many times, and now! I owe you a debt of blood. I donโ€™t know how Iโ€™ll ever repay it.โ€

I glanced at the bandages on his head. โ€œYou donโ€™t owe me for that. If you hadnโ€™t shielded me during the crash, maybe youโ€™d be the one giving me blood.โ€

Jace let out a dry chuckle. โ€œGuess weโ€™re destined to be connected by blood.โ€

I didnโ€™t reply, and his smile faded, turning stiff. Silence fell between us, and for a long while, neither of us spoke.

Finally, he broke the quiet again. โ€œReaโ€ฆโ€

I looked over at him and saw his eyes, red and raw. โ€œIf you and Haydenโ€ฆI mean, ifโ€ฆโ€ He was struggling, tripping over his words. โ€œIf you two donโ€™t work out, if you break up because of all thisโ€ฆwould you ever give me another chance?โ€
