Chapter 477

โ€œYeah, Rea, Dad and Mom just wanted you two to live your lives without feeling like you were any different from everyone else,โ€ Wayne chimed in.

โ€œWe wanted you and Jace together because of the feelings you shared, not for any other reason,โ€ Lindey reiterated.

After all the years Iโ€™d spent living with them, I knew better than anyone how they treated me. And now, with everything laid out, it made sense. If I had known about the blood type earlier, I probably wouldโ€™ve been anxious all the time, constantly worried, and my life wouldnโ€™t have been nearly as carefree as it was.

But one question still nagged at me. โ€œLindey, Matthew, when my parents arranged for me and Jace to be engaged all those years ago, was it because of our blood types?โ€

Lindey glanced at Matthew, and after a few beats, he nodded. โ€œWhen we found out you both had the same rare blood typeโ€”what they call golden bloodโ€”it was a shock. But it also meant that if one of you was ever in danger, the other could save them.โ€

He paused before continuing. โ€œWe worried that if you both married other people, itโ€™d complicate things. So, half-jokingly, we thought, wouldnโ€™t it be easier if you two ended up together? That way, as a couple, youโ€™d always look out for each other.โ€

Matthew sighed. โ€œRea, weโ€™ve been carrying that concern every day, afraid something might happen to one of you.โ€

Wayne jumped in again. โ€œMy parents even lit a safety prayer candle for you two at Cloudscape Monastery. Itโ€™s been burning for decadesโ€”never went out.โ€

I knew about that candle. I always thought it was just something Matthew and Lindey did because they were the kind of people who had rituals for the whole family. I never guessed it was specifically for me and Jace.

Guilt hit me hard. I had doubted their love, over and over. How could I have been so clueless? โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Matthew, Lindey. Iโ€™ve been overthinking everything.โ€

Lindey gently cupped my face. โ€œYouโ€™ve done nothing wrong, sweetheart. If Matthew and I were in your shoes, weโ€™d feel the same way. And, more importantly, you saved Jaceโ€™s life. We should be thanking you.โ€

โ€œPlease donโ€™t say that,โ€ I replied, echoing what Iโ€™d told Jace earlier. โ€œIt wasnโ€™t just because it was him. I wouldโ€™ve done the same for anyone.โ€

Lindeyโ€™s eyes softened, though she didnโ€™t let it go. โ€œEven if youโ€™d help anyone, you wouldnโ€™t have risked your life like that unless it was Jace.โ€ Her words were heavy, like she understood the connection I once had with him, even if I didnโ€™t want to admit it.

I didnโ€™t feel like arguing. Let them believe whatever they wanted. I knew how I felt aboutโ€”Jaceโ€”and who I truly loved. That was enough.

Wayne, sensing the tension, cleared his throat. โ€œMom, Dad, Reaโ€ฆ letโ€™s head to the car. We can talk more there.โ€

Lindey quickly nodded. โ€œYes, letโ€™s go. I even made rice pudding for you, Rea, and brought it along. You can eat some on the way.โ€

I stopped her before she could pull me along. โ€œLindey, wait.โ€ I turned to Matthew, too. โ€œIโ€™m not going home with you. I need to see Hayden.โ€

โ€œIf you need to find him, thatโ€™s easy,โ€ Lindey offered, still smiling. โ€œWayne can go pick him up.โ€

Clearly, Wayne hadnโ€™t told them about Hayden and me, but he sure hadnโ€™t held back on everything else.

โ€œNo, Lindey,โ€ I said firmly. โ€œHayden misunderstood what happened when I gave Jace blood. Thatโ€™s why I rushed backโ€”I need to explain it to him. I canโ€™t come home with you right now.โ€

Lindey blinked, her expression shifting to shock. โ€œA misunderstanding? Haydenโ€ฆ oh, that boy!โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s probably just worried about you,โ€ Matthew cut in, shooting her a look.

Lindey hesitated for a second, then smiled tightly. โ€œI just meantโ€ฆ Hayden really cares about you.โ€

I knew she was picking her words carefully. I couldnโ€™t help but smirk a little. โ€œExactly. He cares about me, which is why I need to go see him. I havenโ€™t seen him in days.โ€

Matthew and Lindey both gave me awkward smiles, clearly disappointed but trying to hide it. I stepped back, creating a little space between us. โ€œGoodbye.โ€
