Chapter 476

As soon as I got on the plane, I shut my eyes and zonked out. I didnโ€™t say a word to Wayne the whole flight. He mustโ€™ve known I wasnโ€™t in the mood, because he didnโ€™t bother trying to talk.

When we finally landed, I turned to him. โ€œIโ€™m going to see Hayden. Iโ€™ll grab a cab.โ€

He hesitated for a second. โ€œMy parents are here.โ€

I tensed up. โ€œYou told them?โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ he admitted, rubbing the back of his neck. โ€œTheyโ€™ve been freaking out about you. When you were out, they called, like, every ten minutes to check in, soโ€”โ€

I cut him off. โ€œI get it. Iโ€™ll let them see Iโ€™m alive and kicking so they can chill.โ€

We headed toward the exit together, and sure enough, I spotted Lindey and Matthew in the crowd, looking all worried.

โ€œRea!โ€ Lindey waved the moment she saw me.

I waved back and hurried over with Wayne. Lindey grabbed my hand right away, her eyes all emotional. โ€œOh, you silly girlโ€ฆ what do I even say to you?โ€

She looked like she wanted to call me reckless, but if I hadnโ€™t been, her precious son might not have made it. Instead, she pulled me into a hug. โ€œYouโ€™re our brave girl. A total blessing.โ€

Matthew gave a soft chuckle. โ€œAlright, sheโ€™s fine now. No need for the waterworks.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re right,โ€ Lindey said, dabbing her eyes. โ€œYou and Jace are both safe, and thatโ€™s all that matters.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re really sorry for everything,โ€ Matthew added quietly, resting his hand on my shoulder.

I could see the concern and gratitude in their eyes, but the second I thought about how weird it was that Jace and I had the same rare blood typeโ€”and all the doubts swirling in my headโ€”I couldnโ€™t feel close to them.

I knew I was spiraling again, just like when I thought Matthew mightโ€™ve been involved in my parentsโ€™ car crash, only to realize I was totally wrong. This time, though, I didnโ€™t want to jump to conclusions; I needed to ask them straight up.

โ€œMatthew, Lindeyโ€ฆ you both knew Jace and I had the same blood type, didnโ€™t you?โ€ I asked, watching their faces stiffen.

Matthew hesitated, then nodded.

โ€œAre you thinking we didnโ€™t tell you for some shady reason?โ€ Lindey asked, already catching onto where my thoughts were going.

They both knew what was up. I didnโ€™t dance around it. โ€œI want to know why you didnโ€™t tell me.โ€

โ€œRea, we didnโ€™t say anything because we didnโ€™t want you to overthink it,โ€ Lindey said quickly. โ€œWe were afraid youโ€™d think we wanted you and Jace together just so you could be his personal blood bank.โ€

There it was, exactly what had been gnawing at me.

โ€œBut not telling me made me overthink it even more,โ€ I said flatly.

Matthew sighed, looking guilty. โ€œWe underestimated you.โ€

He wasnโ€™t wrong. They had. I hadnโ€™t just saved their sonโ€”I almost lost my life doing it.

โ€œItโ€™s our fault, both mine and Matthewโ€™s,โ€ Lindey said. โ€œWe didnโ€™t want you two carrying that weight around. Your blood types are so rare, and we thought if you knew, youโ€™d always feel anxious, like itโ€™d hang over you, affecting everything.โ€
