Chapter 484

Hmph! He didnโ€™t want me anymore, but he was still playing these games. Clearly, he still had feelings for me. Maybe Lena was rightโ€”I needed to play my cards right.

โ€œMr. Shane, Iโ€™ve got plans tonight, but letโ€™s do dinner tomorrow,โ€ I offered, keeping it casual.

Ronโ€™s face lit up. โ€œGreat! Sounds perfect. Hayden, you in for tomorrow?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m busy,โ€ Hayden replied, ice-cold, shutting it down.

Ron looked like he might argue, but I jumped in. โ€œMr. Shane, Iโ€™m taking you somewhere tomorrow that youโ€™ve never been.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€ Ron raised a brow. โ€œSomeplace I havenโ€™t been? Has Hayden?โ€

He never missed a chance to rope Hayden in. I knew whyโ€”Ron was terrified of crossing him, knowing Hayden was the true heir to the Hart family empire.

Just then, the elevator arrived, and Hayden strode out without a glance at Ron.

Ron glanced between us, looking like he wanted to say something, but switched gears quickly. โ€œMs. Kay, I might not survive until tomorrow at this rate,โ€ he joked, hurrying after Hayden.

I couldnโ€™t help but smirk, my sour mood lifted a bit.

When I got home, I immediately called Steve on video. As the screen connected, I heard Jace in the background. โ€œSteve, hurry up. Everyoneโ€™s waiting.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s Keira,โ€ Steve said, and everything on his end went silent. Steveโ€™s playful smile faded into something more serious. His first words were, โ€œIโ€™ve heard everything.โ€

I gave a small smile. โ€œIโ€™m fine, really. Back at work, everythingโ€™s normal.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s my fault. I put you through this,โ€ Steve said, guilt heavy in his voice.

โ€œIf you say that, youโ€™re treating me like a stranger.โ€ I paused, then added, โ€œCongrats on clearing your name.โ€

Steve went quiet for a second. โ€œI owe that to Hayden. When Iโ€™m back, dinnerโ€™s on me, for both of you.โ€

Jace clearly hadnโ€™t mentioned my breakup with Hayden, and I wasnโ€™t about to bring it up. Steve already felt bad enough, and knowing that part of the reason I broke things off was because of everything surrounding him would just make it worse.

โ€œDeal. But Iโ€™m picking the spot. Weโ€™re doing Seavoraโ€”only the best,โ€ I said, keeping it light. The more casual I was, the less guilty heโ€™d feel.

Steve nodded, studying me through the screen. โ€œHow are you really? Any lingering pain?โ€

โ€œNo, none. Iโ€™m eating, drinking, working full days,โ€ I replied. But I caught his eyes flick to the sideโ€”he was looking at Jace.

With a little exasperation, Steve added, โ€œYouโ€™re rushing back to work too soon. Why donโ€™t you take more time off? If youโ€™re worried about money, Iโ€™ll cover it.โ€

I raised a brow. โ€œMoney? Seriously?โ€

Steve chuckled, then gave me a playful scolding. โ€œYouโ€™re not short on cash, so why overwork yourself?โ€

Knowing Jace could hear, I smiled. โ€œBecause thereโ€™s someone at work I want to see.โ€

Steveโ€™s gaze darted to the side again, then he nodded, catching on. โ€œAh, the power of love. Looks like Haydenโ€™s got you wrapped around his finger.โ€

โ€œMore like heโ€™s just seriously committed to me,โ€ I said, making sure Jace got the message loud and clear. No matter what Hayden and I were dealing with, I didnโ€™t want anyone thinking they had a shot or could twist the situation.

โ€œGot it, got it. Even through a screen, youโ€™re still making me gag with all this sweetness,โ€ Steve said, grinning.

Despite everything, he seemed in good spirits, not too weighed down by recent events.

โ€œAre you still planning to compete?โ€ I asked, steering the conversation to something more serious. For Steve, his career was everything.

He hesitated for a second. โ€œYes.โ€

That one word was firm, but I could hear a bit of doubt. I knew how much thought heโ€™d put into that decision. After everything heโ€™d been through, there were still people out there trying to stop him. If theyโ€™d gone that far before, whoโ€™s to say they wouldnโ€™t try again?

โ€œIโ€™ll be there for your next match,โ€ I promised, my voice steady.
