Chapter 488

โ€œOw! Seriously, it hurts!โ€ The guy on the ground, Wayne, was whining, his hand still trapped under Wayneโ€™s foot. Totally calm, Wayne pressed down harder, his gaze fixed on me. โ€œYou okay?โ€

I shrugged, glancing at the shattered remains of my phone. โ€œIโ€™m fine. But my phone? Total goner.โ€

Wayne glanced down at the mess.

โ€œMr. Johnstonโ€ฆ Mr. Johnstonโ€ฆโ€ Sandor, whoโ€™d been lurking nearby, practically tripped over himself running over. He half-reached toward Wayne but stopped, clearly not daring to actually touch him.

โ€œDad, help me!โ€ The guy on the floor groaned, grabbing at Sandor with his free hand.

One wordโ€”โ€œDadโ€โ€”explained everything. No wonder this jerk acted untouchable; his dad clearly had his back.

โ€œMr. Johnston, please, could you just go easy on my son?โ€ Sandor begged, practically wringing his hands.

Wayne didnโ€™t even look at him. The guy on the floor let out another yell, and Sandor was practically spinning in panic. โ€œMr. Johnston! Please!โ€

Wayne, unfazed, just turned to his assistant, Demi. โ€œGet a phone sent over.โ€

Demi nodded and looked at me. โ€œIโ€™ll get the newest modelโ€”โ€

I cut in. โ€œWayne, no need. My phone got busted by their employee, so they can pay for it.โ€

Sandor nodded so fast he looked like a bobblehead. โ€œYes, Iโ€™ll pay for it, of course.โ€

He shot a look at one of his guys, and a brand-new phone was brought over in seconds. But I didnโ€™t take it. No way was I trusting a phone from these peopleโ€”who knew what kind of spyware theyโ€™d sneak in?

I waved over my injured subordinate. โ€œSo, how are we handling his injuries?โ€

Sandor was back to nodding like his life depended on it. โ€œIโ€™m so sorry, truly. Weโ€™ll cover it, whatever the cost.โ€

I turned to my subordinate. โ€œWhat kind of compensation do you want?โ€

But he just looked too rattled to speak. So I answered for him, crossing my arms. โ€œYouโ€™ll compensate him, no question. But thatโ€™s not enough. The one who hit him? He should get the same treatment.โ€

Sandorโ€™s eyes went wide. โ€œWait, Ms. Kayโ€”โ€

โ€œOh, what? You hurt someone, you make it right. Like how you pay for taking a life. Assaultโ€™s the same thing, donโ€™t you think, Mr. Laird?โ€ I gave him a cold look.

โ€œMs. Kayโ€ฆโ€ Sandorโ€™s voice was hesitant, clearly not thrilled.

Wayne jumped in. โ€œIf youโ€™re so reluctant, Mr. Laird, why not handle it yourself? After all, itโ€™s your son. Parents should teach their kids to own up.โ€ His words hit exactly where they needed to.

Sandor went pale. He knew who he was dealing withโ€”he wouldnโ€™t be trembling otherwise. And with Wayne still pressing his foot on his sonโ€™s hand, he realized he had no choice. Any longer and his kidโ€™s fingers might be toast.

Resigned, Sandor grabbed his son by the collar and yanked him up. Only then did Wayne lift his foot.

What came next was a harsh series of slaps, fists, and kicks. By the end, his son lay bruised and silent on the floor.

Sandor straightened up, looking between us, his face tense. โ€œMr. Johnston, Ms. Kayโ€ฆ does this settle things?โ€

Wayne spoke up first. โ€œSince youโ€™re willing to put principles above family, Iโ€™ll let this slide. Weโ€™ll continue the partnership, but this is your one and only chance.โ€

Classic Wayneโ€”delivering a punch but tossing a bone right after.

โ€œAnd Iโ€™ll make sure your superiors know this dealโ€™s moving forward because of you,โ€ he added, throwing in another bone.

Sandorโ€™s face lit up, a wide smile stretching across his face. โ€œThank you, Mr. Johnston! Youโ€™re a true king!โ€ One knew how to play hardball, the other knew how to suck up.

For me, there was no point in sticking around. Sure, Wayne had backed up my employee, but Sandor and his son wouldnโ€™t dare cross him again. Didnโ€™t mean they wouldnโ€™t find a way to mess with any of my people later.

And honestly, anyone with that kind of character? Not someone I wanted to keep doing business with.

As I turned to leave, Sandor scrambled after me, shouting, โ€œMs. Kay! We can keep working together! Iโ€™ll even knock an extra three percent off the deal!โ€
