Chapter 489
โYeah, no thanksโwouldnโt work with you even if you paid me back,โ I shot back.
By the time Wayne strolled out, I was already leaning against my car, waiting. Heโd saved me from that trainwreck of a meeting, and I wasnโt about to leave without a proper thank you.
โWaiting to say thank you?โ Wayne smirked, all smug.
I grinned. โIf you hadnโt stepped in, Iโd probably be in the hospital right now.โ
โDoubt it,โ he replied with a lazy grin. โThat kick you threw? Brutal. Even if his intestines arenโt in a pretzel, heโs feeling it.โ
I laughed, remembering my infamous โFlying Legsโ days back in school when I had a reputation for taking down jerks with a single kick.
โGuess your skills havenโt dulled,โ Wayne said, amused.
I wasnโt in the mood for a trip down memory lane, though, so I switched it up. โDidnโt expect you to be working with this company, too.โ
โJace actually set it up a while back. Iโm just here for a site check,โ Wayne said, shrugging.
I just chuckled, letting the conversation drift.
โYou seem chipper today. Probably that superfood breakfast I sent over,โ he added with a smirk.
My smile stiffened. If he knew I hadnโt even touched it, heโd be ticked.
โThanks, but you donโt need to do that again,โ I said, firm but light. I wasnโt trying to get into a daily breakfast routine with him.
Wayne caught on fast. โToday was a one-time deal. If it was every day, Iโd have to start charging.โ
โPretty sure I couldnโt afford that rate,โ I joked. โAnyway, Wayne, Iโve got work. Gotta go.โ
โHold up.โ Wayne glanced at his watch. โJaceโs flight lands in two hours. Why not come home with me? We can all have dinner together.โ
โYeah, no thanks.โ Even if everyone else was chill, Iโd still feel awkward.
โNah, Iโm drowning in work. Iโll swing by to see your parents some other time,โ I said.
Wayne gave me a faint smile but didnโt push it. Just then, Demi came jogging over, a little out of breath, holding a phone. โMr. Wayne, Keira.โ
She grinned, holding it out to me. โKeira, itโs the newest model.โ
Great. I shot Wayne a look, and he just shrugged. โYouโre not seriously going to turn down a phone, are you? You need one.โ
Demi reached out. โCโmon, hand over your broken one. Iโll get the SIM switched and set it up.โ
I ignored her, focusing on Wayne. โWayne, Iโve got a backup. Donโt need this.โ
A flash of something crossed his eyes, but he didnโt argue. โPut it away, Demi,โ he said.
Demi shot me a look that screamed, โAre you kidding me?โ
Sensing the distance I was keeping, Wayne made an excuse and left. Demi, though, clung to my arm. โKeira, itโs been forever! I missed youโcome on, hang out with me today.โ
Sheโd already gotten time off, so I figured, why not?
We grabbed dinner, hit up a movie, and even got a full-body spa treatment before stopping for late-night snacks.
By the time I got home, it was nearly midnight. What I didnโt expect? Hayden standing at my door.
Heโd broken up with me, so why show up in the middle of the night? I had zero clue. But from the look on his face, he definitely wasnโt here for a reunion.
The moment I saw him, my blood started to boil.
โWaiting out here so lateโฆ Did you leave something behind?โ I said, dripping with sarcasm.
Hayden didnโt answer right away, just stared at me with this intense look that was way too serious. After a beat, he stepped forward, closing the distance in one stride, his voice low and dead serious.
โAre you pregnant?โ
