Chapter 489

โ€œYeah, no thanksโ€”wouldnโ€™t work with you even if you paid me back,โ€ I shot back.

By the time Wayne strolled out, I was already leaning against my car, waiting. Heโ€™d saved me from that trainwreck of a meeting, and I wasnโ€™t about to leave without a proper thank you.

โ€œWaiting to say thank you?โ€ Wayne smirked, all smug.

I grinned. โ€œIf you hadnโ€™t stepped in, Iโ€™d probably be in the hospital right now.โ€

โ€œDoubt it,โ€ he replied with a lazy grin. โ€œThat kick you threw? Brutal. Even if his intestines arenโ€™t in a pretzel, heโ€™s feeling it.โ€

I laughed, remembering my infamous โ€œFlying Legsโ€ days back in school when I had a reputation for taking down jerks with a single kick.

โ€œGuess your skills havenโ€™t dulled,โ€ Wayne said, amused.

I wasnโ€™t in the mood for a trip down memory lane, though, so I switched it up. โ€œDidnโ€™t expect you to be working with this company, too.โ€

โ€œJace actually set it up a while back. Iโ€™m just here for a site check,โ€ Wayne said, shrugging.

I just chuckled, letting the conversation drift.

โ€œYou seem chipper today. Probably that superfood breakfast I sent over,โ€ he added with a smirk.

My smile stiffened. If he knew I hadnโ€™t even touched it, heโ€™d be ticked.

โ€œThanks, but you donโ€™t need to do that again,โ€ I said, firm but light. I wasnโ€™t trying to get into a daily breakfast routine with him.

Wayne caught on fast. โ€œToday was a one-time deal. If it was every day, Iโ€™d have to start charging.โ€

โ€œPretty sure I couldnโ€™t afford that rate,โ€ I joked. โ€œAnyway, Wayne, Iโ€™ve got work. Gotta go.โ€

โ€œHold up.โ€ Wayne glanced at his watch. โ€œJaceโ€™s flight lands in two hours. Why not come home with me? We can all have dinner together.โ€

โ€œYeah, no thanks.โ€ Even if everyone else was chill, Iโ€™d still feel awkward.

โ€œNah, Iโ€™m drowning in work. Iโ€™ll swing by to see your parents some other time,โ€ I said.

Wayne gave me a faint smile but didnโ€™t push it. Just then, Demi came jogging over, a little out of breath, holding a phone. โ€œMr. Wayne, Keira.โ€

She grinned, holding it out to me. โ€œKeira, itโ€™s the newest model.โ€

Great. I shot Wayne a look, and he just shrugged. โ€œYouโ€™re not seriously going to turn down a phone, are you? You need one.โ€

Demi reached out. โ€œCโ€™mon, hand over your broken one. Iโ€™ll get the SIM switched and set it up.โ€

I ignored her, focusing on Wayne. โ€œWayne, Iโ€™ve got a backup. Donโ€™t need this.โ€

A flash of something crossed his eyes, but he didnโ€™t argue. โ€œPut it away, Demi,โ€ he said.

Demi shot me a look that screamed, โ€˜Are you kidding me?โ€™

Sensing the distance I was keeping, Wayne made an excuse and left. Demi, though, clung to my arm. โ€œKeira, itโ€™s been forever! I missed youโ€”come on, hang out with me today.โ€

Sheโ€™d already gotten time off, so I figured, why not?

We grabbed dinner, hit up a movie, and even got a full-body spa treatment before stopping for late-night snacks.

By the time I got home, it was nearly midnight. What I didnโ€™t expect? Hayden standing at my door.

Heโ€™d broken up with me, so why show up in the middle of the night? I had zero clue. But from the look on his face, he definitely wasnโ€™t here for a reunion.

The moment I saw him, my blood started to boil.

โ€œWaiting out here so lateโ€ฆ Did you leave something behind?โ€ I said, dripping with sarcasm.

Hayden didnโ€™t answer right away, just stared at me with this intense look that was way too serious. After a beat, he stepped forward, closing the distance in one stride, his voice low and dead serious.

โ€œAre you pregnant?โ€
