Chapter 497
If Lena left too, Iโd seriously have no one to talk to. I get that lifeโs just a big cycle of people coming and goingโfriends, family, relationships. But I wasnโt ready for Lena to be one of the ones who drifted away.
โItโs not like that,โ she said, catching my worried look. โI just want some more time off. They suspend me whenever they feel like it, bring me back whenever they want. Do they think Iโm that easy?โ She rolled her eyes, making me laugh.
โOh, Dr. Lane, are you finally planning to put them in their place?โ
โAbsolutely. If I donโt push back now, theyโll drop me the second anything else happens.โ Lena was always so solidโat work, in love, everywhere.
โNot worried they wonโt take you back?โ I teased.
She poured me a glass of water, smirking. โPlease. If one place doesnโt want me, thereโs a line that will.โ She leaned in close, her face inches from mine. โThink Iโm low on options?โ
Now that was confidence. With Lenaโs skills, hospitals would be lining up for her if this one didnโt work out. Sheโd already turned down a bunch of offers, just because she wasnโt the type to jump ship. But if they actually pushed her out, sheโd be aiming higher, no question.
โEnough about me,โ Lena said, switching back to me. โWhatโs your plan?โ
She meant Hayden, obviously. I took a sip of water, copying her words: โIf heโs not the one, Iโll just move on. Itโs not like Iโm low on options.โ
Lena grinned and gave me a thumbs-up. โThere she is. Men, jobsโtheyโre just the extras. Weโre the ones who shine, with or without them.โ
Her words loosened something tight in my chest. She helped me sign the discharge papers, and we headed home together.
That night, Lena and I stayed up way too late, sipping drinks and talking about everything and nothing. Just as I was drifting off, Lena murmured, โPrairies are all the rage right now. Wanna go see where the sky meets the earth?โ
โSure, Iโll put in a leave request,โ I mumbled, half-asleep. Then I remembered how Ron had been extra chill with me because of Hayden, and added, โHopefully heโll approve it. Iโve been kinda AWOL lately.โ
Lena grunted, and I laughed, โIf he doesnโt, Iโll quit. Itโs not like I need that job to survive.โ
She snickered, and I fell into a deep, peaceful sleep, only to be yanked awake the next morning by the doorbell ringing over and over.
Reluctantly, I stumbled to the door, and there was Tanya, staring at me like sheโd just smelled something nasty. Weโd been neighbors for a while now, but sheโd never actually come to my door.
I donโt usually wake up cranky, but being woken up by her? Not the best start. โIf youโve got something to say, say it. Otherwise, leave.โ
She gave me a sugary smile. โNothing in particular. Just thought Iโd stop by for a little chat.โ
Right. She was still fishing for that team-up sheโd hinted at before.
โIf it wasnโt clear last time, let me spell it out: we have zero to discuss. And donโt get any other ideas, Tanyaโweโre not the same, never were, never will be. So letโs just pretend each other doesnโt exist, yeah?โ
I knew I sounded sharp, but she didnโt seem fazed. โArenโt you even a little curious to hear me out?โ
โNot interested,โ I said, shutting the door right in her face.
โKeira!โ she yelled, her voice slicing through the quiet hallway, but I couldnโt have cared less.
Yawning, I went back inside to find Lena on the phone, saying, โSheโs way too nice. If it were me, I wouldnโt even look at you if you were on your deathbed. You nearly wrecked her lifeโyou should be begging for forgivenessโฆโ
I frowned, trying to guess who she was laying into. Then she looked up, saw me, and said, โSheโs here. Iโll let her talk to you.โ
She handed me my phone, not even pretending to be discreet. โItโs Jace,โ she said, way too casually.
