Chapter 498

I held the phone, hesitating for a few seconds, wondering what Jace wanted. Lena raised an eyebrow, silently urging me to answer.

โ€œRea,โ€ came Jaceโ€™s voice.

โ€œWhatโ€™s up?โ€ My tone stayed cold, guarded. Even though things were over with Hayden, there was zero chance Iโ€™d go back to Jace. Every time he reached out, my walls shot up on instinct.

โ€œIโ€™m back,โ€ he said, like heโ€™d just returned from some epic quest.

โ€œYeah, I know,โ€ Wayne had already told me.

Jace paused. โ€œCan we meet? If you donโ€™t want to meet alone, we can do it at my parentsโ€™ house. They really miss you.โ€

I pictured Matthew and Lindey, the way theyโ€™d always been there for meโ€”the airport pick-ups, the family dinners. Of course, theyโ€™d be worried.

โ€œI have some things I need to tell you,โ€ Jace added when I stayed quiet. โ€œItโ€™s about Steveโ€ฆ and it involves Hayden, too.โ€

My breath hitched. Hayden and I were done; anything related to him shouldnโ€™t even matter anymore. But that thought didnโ€™t last. Against my better judgment, I heard myself say, โ€œFine. Iโ€™ll come by later.โ€

โ€œGreat. Momโ€™s been talking about making dumplings for you,โ€ Jace said, sounding way too hopeful.

After I hung up, Lena shot me a smirk. โ€œYour ex seems pretty persistent.โ€

I ignored her teasing. โ€œHe says itโ€™s important, and it involves Hayden.โ€

โ€œOh, pleaseโ€”thatโ€™s bait, and you know it. Werenโ€™t you just saying you and Hayden were done?โ€ Lena gave me that raised-brow look, knowing exactly what she was doing. She knew I wasnโ€™t over him that easily.

โ€œIโ€™m going because of Matthew and Lindey, not because of Hayden,โ€ I insisted, digging in. โ€œLindey promised me gnocchi.โ€

Lena let out a snort, clearly unconvinced. โ€œForget gnocchi; the Johnston family should be giving you a third of their estate for saving Jaceโ€™s life,โ€ she said with a sigh.

Her comment brought up old suspicions, but Matthew and Lindey had explained everything, and theyโ€™d been so open about it. Obsessing over it would only drive me crazy.

โ€œSeriously, what are the odds of you and Jace both having that rare blood type? Itโ€™s like winning the million-dollar lottery,โ€ Lena said, watching me with that look.

โ€œI asked Matthew and Lindey,โ€ I admitted. โ€œThey said theyโ€™d known about it for years. My parents knew, too. Itโ€™s part of why they wanted Jace and me engaged.โ€

Lena gave a nod. โ€œWell, if you ever need a transfusion and Jace hesitates for even a second, Iโ€™ll personally knock some sense into him.โ€ Then she sighed. โ€œGuess our prairie tripโ€™s off, huh?โ€

โ€œYou were actually serious about that?โ€ Iโ€™d thought she was kidding.

โ€œAbsolutely. I was ready to pack up and go,โ€ she said, patting her pocket. โ€œWeโ€™ve got the money; we can go anywhere, anytime.โ€

On that, Lena and I totally agreed. Money equaled freedom. It was our best insurance.

โ€œFine, but youโ€™ll have to wait for me,โ€ I said, already dreaming of a breakโ€”my last one had been after breaking things off with Jace.

Lena mustโ€™ve thought of that too, because she chuckled, teasing, โ€œMaybe this time youโ€™ll find someone more reliable than Hayden.โ€

I laughed. โ€œIn that case, letโ€™s not call it a trip. Letโ€™s call itโ€ฆ a โ€˜search for romance.โ€™โ€

โ€œIf the first one doesnโ€™t work out, on to the next,โ€ Lena grinned, patting my shoulder.

I just smiled. The whole โ€œnext one will be betterโ€ thing sounded great in theory. But finding Mr. Right? Not as easy as it sounded.

After Jace, the only reason Iโ€™d even managed to open up to Hayden was because Jace had hurt me so deeply. But with Hayden, it was differentโ€”this time, I was the one who messed it up, the reason heโ€™d walked away. This was the one relationship I hadnโ€™t wanted to end. Even if there was nothing left to hold onto, I wasnโ€™t ready to just move on.
