Chapter 498
I held the phone, hesitating for a few seconds, wondering what Jace wanted. Lena raised an eyebrow, silently urging me to answer.
โRea,โ came Jaceโs voice.
โWhatโs up?โ My tone stayed cold, guarded. Even though things were over with Hayden, there was zero chance Iโd go back to Jace. Every time he reached out, my walls shot up on instinct.
โIโm back,โ he said, like heโd just returned from some epic quest.
โYeah, I know,โ Wayne had already told me.
Jace paused. โCan we meet? If you donโt want to meet alone, we can do it at my parentsโ house. They really miss you.โ
I pictured Matthew and Lindey, the way theyโd always been there for meโthe airport pick-ups, the family dinners. Of course, theyโd be worried.
โI have some things I need to tell you,โ Jace added when I stayed quiet. โItโs about Steveโฆ and it involves Hayden, too.โ
My breath hitched. Hayden and I were done; anything related to him shouldnโt even matter anymore. But that thought didnโt last. Against my better judgment, I heard myself say, โFine. Iโll come by later.โ
โGreat. Momโs been talking about making dumplings for you,โ Jace said, sounding way too hopeful.
After I hung up, Lena shot me a smirk. โYour ex seems pretty persistent.โ
I ignored her teasing. โHe says itโs important, and it involves Hayden.โ
โOh, pleaseโthatโs bait, and you know it. Werenโt you just saying you and Hayden were done?โ Lena gave me that raised-brow look, knowing exactly what she was doing. She knew I wasnโt over him that easily.
โIโm going because of Matthew and Lindey, not because of Hayden,โ I insisted, digging in. โLindey promised me gnocchi.โ
Lena let out a snort, clearly unconvinced. โForget gnocchi; the Johnston family should be giving you a third of their estate for saving Jaceโs life,โ she said with a sigh.
Her comment brought up old suspicions, but Matthew and Lindey had explained everything, and theyโd been so open about it. Obsessing over it would only drive me crazy.
โSeriously, what are the odds of you and Jace both having that rare blood type? Itโs like winning the million-dollar lottery,โ Lena said, watching me with that look.
โI asked Matthew and Lindey,โ I admitted. โThey said theyโd known about it for years. My parents knew, too. Itโs part of why they wanted Jace and me engaged.โ
Lena gave a nod. โWell, if you ever need a transfusion and Jace hesitates for even a second, Iโll personally knock some sense into him.โ Then she sighed. โGuess our prairie tripโs off, huh?โ
โYou were actually serious about that?โ Iโd thought she was kidding.
โAbsolutely. I was ready to pack up and go,โ she said, patting her pocket. โWeโve got the money; we can go anywhere, anytime.โ
On that, Lena and I totally agreed. Money equaled freedom. It was our best insurance.
โFine, but youโll have to wait for me,โ I said, already dreaming of a breakโmy last one had been after breaking things off with Jace.
Lena mustโve thought of that too, because she chuckled, teasing, โMaybe this time youโll find someone more reliable than Hayden.โ
I laughed. โIn that case, letโs not call it a trip. Letโs call itโฆ a โsearch for romance.โโ
โIf the first one doesnโt work out, on to the next,โ Lena grinned, patting my shoulder.
I just smiled. The whole โnext one will be betterโ thing sounded great in theory. But finding Mr. Right? Not as easy as it sounded.
After Jace, the only reason Iโd even managed to open up to Hayden was because Jace had hurt me so deeply. But with Hayden, it was differentโthis time, I was the one who messed it up, the reason heโd walked away. This was the one relationship I hadnโt wanted to end. Even if there was nothing left to hold onto, I wasnโt ready to just move on.
