Chapter 524

Thorsten leaned in, his gaze fixed on my face as he chuckled softly. I had no idea what he found so amusing, but I held his stare, demanding an answer. I wasnโ€™t about to back down now.

Finally, after his laughter faded, he said, โ€œAlright, Iโ€™ll let you die with the truth. Your father got in the way of someone elseโ€™s money.โ€

My mind flashed to the contract my father had been negotiating. โ€œHe blocked someone elseโ€™s profitโ€”not yours. So why did you go after my parents?โ€ I pressed, still not understanding.

Thorsten smirked. โ€œHave you forgotten what I do? How I made my fortune?โ€

The answer hit me. Heโ€™d done it for moneyโ€”someone had hired him. โ€œWho was it?โ€ I demanded, my voice tight with desperation.

Thorsten didnโ€™t answer directly. Instead, he leaned back, watching me. โ€œWho do you think it was?โ€

The pieces fell into place, each one hitting like a blow. My parentsโ€™ death was tied to that contract, which eventually landed in Matthewโ€™s hands. Soโ€ฆ it was him.

Iโ€™d suspected it before, but Thorsten had brushed off my suspicions, even saying Matthew had set up a special account with the contractโ€™s profits just for me. Now, with Thorstenโ€™s words, doubt crashed over me.

โ€œAre you losing your memory?โ€ I managed, my voice shaky. โ€œYou were the one who told meโ€”โ€

But I trailed off as he just kept smirking, that familiar, twisted smile reminding me of one thing: he was a hired gun, a professional liar paid to make problems disappear. Who knew how many stories heโ€™d spun over the years?

I didnโ€™t want to believe it, but his words planted seeds of doubt everywhere. โ€œSoโ€ฆ am I here now because someone paid you, too?โ€ I asked, searching his face for any hint of truth.

Thorsten chuckled, โ€œSee? Youโ€™re smarter than mostโ€ฆโ€

His twisted praise struck like a bolt of ice. I shook my head. โ€œNo, I donโ€™t believe you. Youโ€™re lying.โ€

He shrugged, unbothered. โ€œIโ€™m about to send you to meet your parents. What would be the point in lying now?โ€ He extended his hand, and a bodyguard stepped forward, slipping a cigar into his grip.

Thorsten took a slow drag, blowing a ring of smoke into the stale air. โ€œSince youโ€™re someone I donโ€™t particularly dislike, Iโ€™ll let you go with the truth.โ€

He paused, watching me, then continued. โ€œWhen your parents first came to Seavora, they were struggling. They worked so hard to make ends meet, they barely had time for you, which is why you got sick so often.

By chance, the Johnston familyโ€™s younger sonโ€”the one who almost became your husbandโ€”was in the hospital for an injury and ended up sharing a room with you.

Jace, being your age and a little chatterbox, kept you company, and through that, your parents met his.โ€

His smile was chilling. โ€œOnce Matthew found out you shared Jaceโ€™s blood type, he had an ideaโ€”to have you and Jace engaged, so youโ€™d always be nearby in case he ever needed blood.โ€

I felt the blood drain from my face. So it all came down to my blood.

โ€œAfter that, Matthew saw potential in your dad. He noticed he was sharp, able to seal deals Matthew couldnโ€™t. Your father was talented, and Matthew saw an opportunity. He invited him to go into business together.

But your dad turned him downโ€”he wanted to make it on his own.

Then one day, your father approached me about securing a contract. Weโ€™d just come to an agreement when someone hired me to take out two people.

I didnโ€™t know it was your parents until that contract ended up in Matthewโ€™s hands. Thatโ€™s when I realized who Iโ€™d killed.โ€

Thorsten took another drag on his cigar, looking almost bored. โ€œLater, Matthew explained the situationโ€”about the poor orphan youโ€™d become.

I felt a bit of guilt, so I agreed to his partnership, and he even created that special account to save all the profits from that contract for you.โ€

I felt frozen. โ€œSo, when did you finally confirm Matthew was the one who hired you?โ€

He sneered. โ€œYou think Iโ€™m stupid? Once we started working together, I put the pieces together and looked into it. Found out it was him who hired me. Thatโ€™s when I made my moveโ€”I blackmailed him. For the next ten years, he worked with me to clean up my business.โ€

I stared at him, struggling to process it all. โ€œHe must have some leverage over you, too, doesnโ€™t he? Otherwise, why go after me now?โ€

Thorstenโ€™s smile faded, his eyes narrowing. Iโ€™d struck a nerve.
