Chapter 533

Jace looked wreckedโ€”pale, hair a mess, rough stubble shadowing his jaw. Iโ€™d never seen him this messed up, like heโ€™d had a night just as brutal as mine. He mustโ€™ve found out about Matthew. Why else would he keep blowing up my phone?

Weirdly, I didnโ€™t feel the anger Iโ€™d expected. Instead, I feltโ€ฆnothing. Like something in me had finally burnt out. Maybe I was numb.

The doorway wasnโ€™t the place for this. I said, โ€œCome in.โ€

Jace walked in and dropped onto the couch across from me. โ€œMy mom told me everythingโ€ฆ Rea, Iโ€™m so sorryโ€ฆโ€

I didnโ€™t answer. I knew he hadnโ€™t just come here to apologize.

โ€œLook, I know sorryโ€™s not enough. But I came here to askโ€ฆ no, to begโ€ฆโ€ His voice cracked as he looked at me, his face full of something raw. โ€œPlease, justโ€ฆ can you spare my dad? Just for whatever time he has left?โ€

Beg? Hearing that word from Jace was rare. For all his recklessness, heโ€™d always been fiercely loyal to his family.

I just stared, watching his jaw tighten. โ€œI know itโ€™s a lot to ask. After everything my dadโ€™s doneโ€ฆ your family owes a debt he could never repay. But please, let him go. Let me pay back that debt instead.โ€

โ€œJace, do you even get what kind of debt this is? Itโ€™s a life debt,โ€ I said, my calm slipping.

Life debt. The words hit me, reminding me of all the times Iโ€™d given my blood to him. Like maybe he already owed me.

Jace dropped his gaze. โ€œI know. Thatโ€™s why, if youโ€™re willing to spare him, Iโ€™ll do whatever you ask.โ€ But that was the problemโ€”I didnโ€™t know what I wanted from him or his family. And that made it worse. โ€œWhat could you possibly do to make up for my parentsโ€™ lives?โ€ I said, my voice sharp.

Jace looked at me, defeated. โ€œRea, I knowโ€ฆ no matter what we do, your parents arenโ€™t coming back.โ€

โ€œExactly. I lost my parentsโ€”real, living people. All I have now is a cold gravestone to call Mom and Dad.โ€ My voice wavered.

I fought to keep it together. โ€œJace, do you know who I hate most right now?โ€

He waited, but I didnโ€™t make him guess. โ€œMyself,โ€ I whispered, slapping my own arm. โ€œI hate that I have the same blood type as you. I hate that I ever met you.โ€

His face fell, all the color draining out like heโ€™d taken a hit.

โ€œJace, all of thisโ€”this mess, this painโ€”it started with you. Youโ€™re the one I should hate the most.โ€ I spat the words, every memory of us hitting me at once.

Once, those memories had been my happiness, my reason to get up each day. Now, they were just bitter irony.

โ€œYeah, Iโ€™m the one to hate,โ€ Jace said, nodding. His calm acceptance only fueled my anger. โ€œAnd whatโ€™s that even worth? Can you turn back time?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ he replied, his voice barely a whisper. โ€œRea, would it make you hate me less if Iโ€ฆ if I died?โ€

Died? Was he serious? I was so wound up, I couldnโ€™t stop myself. โ€œFine, go die, then!โ€

He held my gaze, a strange darkness in his eyes. โ€œIf that would ease your hatred and make you spare my dadโ€ฆ then I will.โ€

He stood, his face softening as he looked at me. โ€œRea, if I had one thing in life that made me truly happy, it was you. My biggest regret is letting you go. If thereโ€™s a next life, Iโ€™d want to meet you, love you quietly, grow old together.โ€

The words hung in the silence as he turned and walked to the door.
