Chapter 534 +25 BONUS

I heard about Jaceโ€™s car accident two hours laterโ€”Wayne was the one to break the news. โ€œRea, Jace was in an accident,โ€ he said, his voice tight with worry. โ€œHeโ€™s in surgeryโ€ฆ Can you come to the hospital?โ€

My hand started shaking, and before I knew it, my phone slipped right out of my grip and crashed onto the floor. Wayne mustโ€™ve heard the thud. โ€œRea, are you okay? What happened?โ€

Lena was in the kitchen, cooking, but at the sound, she rushed over, eyes wide with concern. Wayneโ€™s voice came through again. โ€œRea, weโ€™re not asking you to come for, like, a blood transfusion or anything. We just thoughtโ€ฆ maybe youโ€™d want to see him. Becauseโ€ฆโ€

He hesitated. โ€œBecause when they put him in the ambulance, the only name he was calling out was yours.โ€

Lena shot a look at the phone, then back at me, and picked it up without missing a beat. โ€œJace and Keira are over. She doesnโ€™t need to hear this.โ€

Silence from Wayne, and then Lena hung up. She sat down next to me, wrapping an arm around my shoulders. โ€œUnreal,โ€ she muttered. โ€œAfter all theyโ€™ve put you through, they still think youโ€™d just come running for him.โ€

I mumbled, โ€œItโ€™s my fault, thoughโ€ฆ the things I said to himโ€ฆโ€

Lena had no idea what Iโ€™d said to Jace in the heat of our last conversation, so she was a little confused. She didnโ€™t push. She just kept her hand on my shoulder, her voice soft. โ€œHey, donโ€™t overthink it. This isnโ€™t your fault, so donโ€™t go blaming yourself.โ€

I didnโ€™t go to the hospital, but the worry wouldnโ€™t let up. I hated the Johnstons. I hated Jace. But the idea of him actually dying? That scared me. If he was gone, I wouldnโ€™t even have the right to hate him anymore.

Ever since finding out the Johnstons were behind my parentsโ€™ deaths, Iโ€™d felt lost, like my mind was spiraling with too much to process but no clue what to do. I wanted to visit my parentsโ€™ graves, but I hadnโ€™t been able to face it. Because it was my fault they were gone.

โ€œRea, why donโ€™t we visit Cloudscape Monastery?โ€ Lena offered suddenly.

It was a good idea. I hadnโ€™t been up there since Jace and I broke up. โ€œYou can find a little peace, and Iโ€™ll make a wish while Iโ€™m at it,โ€ she said, trying to brighten my mood.

Luckily, she had the day off, and I was beyond grateful to have her with me. When we arrived at the mountain, we realized the recent rains had totally washed out the path.

โ€œGreat. If we want to go up, itโ€™ll take at least two hours hiking,โ€ Lena said, sighing. The Johnstons had once funded the road up to the monastery, but now it was blocked. And still, I felt this weird pull to keep going.

With the summer heat, we were sweating after just a few steps. Hiking all the way up? A whole new level. โ€œRea, I might have to break our best-friend code here. I donโ€™t think I can make it,โ€ Lena admitted, throwing a defeated look at the mountain.

Then she turned toward the monasteryโ€™s peak, clasped her hands in mock prayer, and called out, โ€œTo any higher powers listening. Iโ€™m sending my request from down here. I donโ€™t need wealth, and I donโ€™t need a perfect lifeโ€”I just ask for less sickness and pain in the world, and for every newborn to come into this world safe and sound.โ€

I stared at her, surprised by her wish. She noticed my expression and laughed. โ€œWhatโ€™s that look for?

โ€œThatโ€™s your whole wish?โ€ I asked. โ€œJust that?โ€

โ€œYep, thatโ€™s it. What, you thought Iโ€™d wish for something else?โ€ she replied, grinning.

I took a breath. โ€œI thoughtโ€ฆ maybe youโ€™d wish for something for yourself, or you and Nate.โ€

She laughed, bright and carefree. โ€œHonestly? Iโ€™m pretty good right now. And as for Nate and meโ€ฆ Iโ€™m just letting things happen as theyโ€ฆโ€
