For someone like me, reading medical texts was no joy. But somehow, the events of the past month had shifted something in me, grounding me in ways I didnโt expect.
When Lona walked in, she stopped for a second. Then she came right over and tapped me. "Tags! Welcome back."
She was the only person Iโd told about Haysonโs death and the only one who knew where to scatter his ashes. Leaning into her, I caught the faint smell of disinfectant.
โI want a feast,โ I said.
โSay no more! Iโll make it happen.โ Her voice had that slightly stuffy, emotional edge. Sheโd probably been waiting for me to crawl out of my dark hole. And I was finally doing it.
Hayden was gone. But I was still here, and there was life waiting for me to live.
At the restaurant, I took a bite of my food and asked casually, โHave you seen Jace lately?โ
โSeen him?โ Lena snorted. โTry every day. Heโs been in the hospital this whole timeโever since, you know, the crocodile bite.โ
I frowned. It had been over a monthโsurely he shouldโve recovered by now. โHeโs still being treated?โ
โYeah, thereโs this one wound that wonโt heal. The tissue keeps breaking down, and theyโve had to scrape it out a few times,โ she said, making my appetite waver.
The image of Jace being bitten flashed through my mind. โItโs that bad?โ
Lena gave me a cautious look. โWant to go see him?โ
โOf course. He got bitten because of me,โ I said, taking a sip of juice to steady myself.
Lena sliced off a piece of meat and dropped it onto my plate. โEat more. Youโve lost so much weight this past month.โ
โHave I? Iโve been eating three proper meals a day,โ I said honestly. I wasnโt lyingโI had been eating and sleeping regularly.
โThen it must be the heartbreak,โ she teased, smirking.
They say women are mirrors. Looking at Lenaโs radiant complexion, I couldnโt help but tease back. โYouโre glowing yourself. Nate must be treating you right.โ
She shrugged, trying to downplay it. โItโs alright. Heโs always busy, and Iโve got my own stuff. When heโs free, Iโm in surgery. When Iโm free, heโs halfway across the world doing a lecture.โ Her tone said one thing, but the smile creeping onto her face said something else. This must be what people mean by love. If itโs real, distance doesnโt matter.
โWhat about you?โ she asked, her voice turning serious. โWhat are your plans now that youโre back?โ
She didnโt have to finish. We both knew work had been my whole life.
โOf course, Iโm going back. What else am I going to do?โ
โItโs not like you canโt afford it,โ Lena teased, reminding me of the fortune Iโd inherited. The amusement park, the money Dad left me, and the trust fund. Technically, I could retire now and live comfortably forever.
โBut lounging around isnโt my style,โ I said with a grin. Worse than that โ get to lay off the queues, maybe even spark a little workplace romance.
Lena froze for a second, then burst out laughing. She raised her eyebrows, twinkling. โWorkplace romance!โ
I grabbed my juice to clink glasses, but somethingโor someoneโcaught my eye. A man was walking down the stairs from the second floor. His outfit was casual, nothing flashy, but there was no hiding his aristocratic vibe. The kind of presence that filled a room without trying.
โWhat are you staring at?โ Lena asked, noticing my sudden stillness.
โLena,โ I said quietly, my grin fading. โIf I see someone here todayโa very familiar faceโdo you think itโs just coincidence? Or something planned?โ
Her smile dimmed as she followed my gaze.
โIf itโs him,โ she said, her voice low, โthen itโs definitely planned.โ
And as if on cue, the man turned his head and locked eyes with me.
