Listen to this chapter:

For someone like me, reading medical texts was no joy. But somehow, the events of the past month had shifted something in me, grounding me in ways I didnโ€™t expect.

When Lona walked in, she stopped for a second. Then she came right over and tapped me. "Tags! Welcome back."

She was the only person Iโ€™d told about Haysonโ€™s death and the only one who knew where to scatter his ashes. Leaning into her, I caught the faint smell of disinfectant.

โ€œI want a feast,โ€ I said.

โ€œSay no more! Iโ€™ll make it happen.โ€ Her voice had that slightly stuffy, emotional edge. Sheโ€™d probably been waiting for me to crawl out of my dark hole. And I was finally doing it.

Hayden was gone. But I was still here, and there was life waiting for me to live.

At the restaurant, I took a bite of my food and asked casually, โ€œHave you seen Jace lately?โ€

โ€œSeen him?โ€ Lena snorted. โ€œTry every day. Heโ€™s been in the hospital this whole timeโ€”ever since, you know, the crocodile bite.โ€

I frowned. It had been over a monthโ€”surely he shouldโ€™ve recovered by now. โ€œHeโ€™s still being treated?โ€

โ€œYeah, thereโ€™s this one wound that wonโ€™t heal. The tissue keeps breaking down, and theyโ€™ve had to scrape it out a few times,โ€ she said, making my appetite waver.

The image of Jace being bitten flashed through my mind. โ€œItโ€™s that bad?โ€

Lena gave me a cautious look. โ€œWant to go see him?โ€

โ€œOf course. He got bitten because of me,โ€ I said, taking a sip of juice to steady myself.

Lena sliced off a piece of meat and dropped it onto my plate. โ€œEat more. Youโ€™ve lost so much weight this past month.โ€

โ€œHave I? Iโ€™ve been eating three proper meals a day,โ€ I said honestly. I wasnโ€™t lyingโ€”I had been eating and sleeping regularly.

โ€œThen it must be the heartbreak,โ€ she teased, smirking.

They say women are mirrors. Looking at Lenaโ€™s radiant complexion, I couldnโ€™t help but tease back. โ€œYouโ€™re glowing yourself. Nate must be treating you right.โ€

She shrugged, trying to downplay it. โ€œItโ€™s alright. Heโ€™s always busy, and Iโ€™ve got my own stuff. When heโ€™s free, Iโ€™m in surgery. When Iโ€™m free, heโ€™s halfway across the world doing a lecture.โ€ Her tone said one thing, but the smile creeping onto her face said something else. This must be what people mean by love. If itโ€™s real, distance doesnโ€™t matter.

โ€œWhat about you?โ€ she asked, her voice turning serious. โ€œWhat are your plans now that youโ€™re back?โ€

She didnโ€™t have to finish. We both knew work had been my whole life.

โ€œOf course, Iโ€™m going back. What else am I going to do?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not like you canโ€™t afford it,โ€ Lena teased, reminding me of the fortune Iโ€™d inherited. The amusement park, the money Dad left me, and the trust fund. Technically, I could retire now and live comfortably forever.

โ€œBut lounging around isnโ€™t my style,โ€ I said with a grin. Worse than that โ€“ get to lay off the queues, maybe even spark a little workplace romance.

Lena froze for a second, then burst out laughing. She raised her eyebrows, twinkling. โ€œWorkplace romance!โ€

I grabbed my juice to clink glasses, but somethingโ€”or someoneโ€”caught my eye. A man was walking down the stairs from the second floor. His outfit was casual, nothing flashy, but there was no hiding his aristocratic vibe. The kind of presence that filled a room without trying.

โ€œWhat are you staring at?โ€ Lena asked, noticing my sudden stillness.

โ€œLena,โ€ I said quietly, my grin fading. โ€œIf I see someone here todayโ€”a very familiar faceโ€”do you think itโ€™s just coincidence? Or something planned?โ€

Her smile dimmed as she followed my gaze.

โ€œIf itโ€™s him,โ€ she said, her voice low, โ€œthen itโ€™s definitely planned.โ€

And as if on cue, the man turned his head and locked eyes with me.
