Chapter 635

It hit me thenโ€”Iโ€™d completely overlooked the Hart family. As the newly named heir, Haydenโ€™s absence should have sent alarms blaring. They should have been looking for him, not sitting back. But instead of a real investigation, they were just sending people to Yuna, fishing for details through her. Something didnโ€™t add up.

Trying to ignore the slump in Yunaโ€™s shoulders, I asked, โ€œYuna, who from the Hart family came to see you?โ€

โ€œA guy about Haydenโ€™s age. His name wasโ€ฆ Kylian.โ€

Kylian Hart. His face popped into my mind like a bad memory.

โ€œHow many times did he come? Was he always alone?โ€ I pushed.

โ€œYeah,โ€ Yuna said with a small nod.

She wasnโ€™t in the mood to keep talking, and I didnโ€™t want to push her further. Instead, I shifted gears. โ€œWhenever youโ€™re ready to start college, let me know. Iโ€™ll take you.โ€

Yuna looked up, her gaze steady. โ€œI want both you and Hayden to take me.โ€

Her simple request landed with weight. I forced a smile, swallowing hard. โ€œSure. Iโ€™ll let him know. Hopefullyโ€ฆ heโ€™ll be back soon.โ€

As I left Yunaโ€™s, the knot in my chest tightened. The Hart familyโ€™s actions didnโ€™t add up. If Hayden was missing, shouldnโ€™t they have been out searchingโ€”or at least reached out to me? But instead, they went to Yuna, fishing for answers through her. Why?

Maybe they assumed Hayden and I had split for good, so avoiding me made sense. But Yara? If they didnโ€™t want to deal with me, she seemed like the obvious choice.

When I tracked her down, she met me with her usual bluntness. โ€œYouโ€™re looking pretty good, all things considered.โ€

โ€œWhat was I supposed to do?โ€ I shot back, my voice flat. โ€œThrow myself into his grave?โ€

She chuckled. โ€œHonestly, I thought you might.โ€

I brushed off her teasing and cut to the chase. โ€œDid the Hart family come to you?โ€

Her smirk faded, and she hesitated. โ€œYeah, they did. Wanted to know where Hayden was.โ€

โ€œAnd you told them?โ€

She shrugged. โ€œOf course. No point in hiding it. You know how much he meant to them.โ€

โ€œBut they didnโ€™t believe you,โ€ I said, remembering what Kylian had told Yuna. Yara didnโ€™t even flinch. โ€œMakes sense. Hayden vanished without a traceโ€”no body, no ashes. If it were me, I wouldnโ€™t believe it either.โ€

Her tone was casual, but her words only tightened the unease in my chest. โ€œDonโ€™t you think it was rushed?โ€ I asked, holding her gaze.

โ€œRushed?โ€

โ€œHaving Hayden cremated without telling anyoneโ€ฆ Donโ€™t you think that was a little much? Maybe even crossing a line?โ€

Yara let out a sharp laugh, tinged with defensiveness. โ€œAre you seriously here to call me out for that?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m just saying something feelsโ€ฆ off,โ€ I said softly. Back then, Iโ€™d been too buried in grief to notice the cracks. But now, with the fog lifting, those cracks were glaring.

โ€œI told you everything,โ€ she said evenly, though her eyes hardened. โ€œIf youโ€™re still hung up on it, thatโ€™s your problem. And donโ€™t forgetโ€”youโ€™re the one who took his ashes and buried them.โ€

That hit like a wall slamming shut. But still, the words slipped out before I could stop them. โ€œI never sawโ€ฆโ€

The words hung in the air, unfinished. โ€˜I never saw Haydenโ€™s body being cremated with my own eyes.โ€™ But I couldnโ€™t say it.

โ€œAre you saying you think Hayden isnโ€™t dead?โ€
