Chapter 634
This lifetime, neither of us would ever reach Hayden again. The thought twisted something deep in my heart, the way it always did when I thought of him.
The worst part? I couldnโt tell her. Not yet. Not until I was sure her heartโboth physically and emotionallyโcould take it. Iโd need to talk to Lena, get Nate to give her a thorough check-up. Because eventually, the truth would have to come out. Hayden was gone, and while I could shield her from that heartbreak for now, I knew I couldnโt keep it buried forever.
โWhat do you want to tell Hayden?โ I asked, forcing my voice to stay light. โJust a quick thank-you?โ
โExactly!โ Yunaโs face lit up as she hugged the admission letter close, her joy practically glowing.
I cleared my throat. โNo need for that. Just thank me insteadโIโm the one who got you the letter.โ
Yuna blinked, surprised, and then her face broke into a playful grin. She gave me a goofy thumbs-up. โYouโre the best sis-in-law ever, Keira. Thanks!โ
I accepted her gratitude with a calm smile. โYouโre welcome.โ
But Yuna wasnโt about to let it go. โStill, you should call Hayden anyway.โ
This stubborn girl. I bit back a sigh and scrambled for another excuse. โYou just want to share the good news with him, huh? Donโt botherโI already told him.โ
โItโs not that,โ Yuna said, shaking her head, her tone softer now. โI miss him. There are things I want to say to him.โ
Her words hit me like a brick. I hesitated, searching for somethingโanythingโto say, but came up blank.
Yuna wasnโt dumb. She frowned, her expression sharpening as she studied me like she was piecing something together. โWhy donโt you want to call him? Did something happen to Hayden?โ
Chapter 634
My heart lurched. I shook my head too quickly. โNo, of course not.โ
โBut I havenโt been able to reach him since Houston,โ she said, grabbing my arm in near-panic. She even dropped the admission letter sheโd been holding so carefully. โHaydenโs in trouble, isnโt he?โ
Her fear was palpable, and for a moment, I froze. Just one wrong wordโor even a nodโand I was sure it would shatter her.
I scrambled for a way out, latching onto the only thing I could think of: his old profession. โNo, Yuna, stop overthinking. Heโsโฆ heโs been called in for another mission. Itโs classified. He canโt contact anyone outside.โ
She frowned, unconvinced. โBut Hayden retired, didnโt he? Why would he be sent on another mission? Youโre hiding something from me, arenโt you?โ
โIโm not,โ I said quickly, my voice steady but my eyes darting to the side.
โThen call him!โ she shot back, practically cornering me.
I realized there was no point in arguing further, so I handed her my phone. โLook, if you donโt believe me, call him yourself. But Iโm telling you, you wonโt get throughโheโs on a mission, and his lineโs cut off.โ
Yuna just stared at the phone like it might bite her. She didnโt try to dial, though. Guess some part of her knew I wasnโt lyingโat least about not being able to reach him. Instead, she mumbled under her breath, sounding more lost than anything. โHe promised meโฆ he said he wouldnโt do anything dangerous again.โ
โThis is different,โ I said, trying to sound casual but also firm. โTheyโre dealing with a seriously bad guy. You saw what happened in Houstonโhe almost dragged you and Wade into it.โ
Her eyes snapped back to mine. โYouโre really not lying to me?โ Yuna asked.
โOf course not. Stop overthinking,โ I said, keeping my voice steady even though I couldnโt quite meet her eyes.
For a second, her shoulders sagged, and her grip on my arm loosened. Her eyes flickered with worry and doubt, but I could see her tryingโreally tryingโto believe me. Still, she wasnโt fully buying it.
โDonโt stress, okay?โ I said gently. โThe second Hayden reaches out, Iโll make sure he calls you.โ
But she wasnโt letting it go. Her gaze sharpened, a new determination settling in. โIf Hayden doesnโt contact me within a month, somethingโs wrong. I know it.โ
โWhy would you even think that?โ I asked, honestly confused.
She picked up the crumpled admission letter, brushing it off with steady hands. Her voice was calm but unshakable. โThe longest Haydenโs ever gone without contacting me is seventy-one days. Itโs already been forty-two.โ
Yunaโs bond with Hayden was undeniable. She wasnโt the type to be fooledโnot when she was so closely tied to him.
