Chapter 634

This lifetime, neither of us would ever reach Hayden again. The thought twisted something deep in my heart, the way it always did when I thought of him.

The worst part? I couldnโ€™t tell her. Not yet. Not until I was sure her heartโ€”both physically and emotionallyโ€”could take it. Iโ€™d need to talk to Lena, get Nate to give her a thorough check-up. Because eventually, the truth would have to come out. Hayden was gone, and while I could shield her from that heartbreak for now, I knew I couldnโ€™t keep it buried forever.

โ€œWhat do you want to tell Hayden?โ€ I asked, forcing my voice to stay light. โ€œJust a quick thank-you?โ€

โ€œExactly!โ€ Yunaโ€™s face lit up as she hugged the admission letter close, her joy practically glowing.

I cleared my throat. โ€œNo need for that. Just thank me insteadโ€”Iโ€™m the one who got you the letter.โ€

Yuna blinked, surprised, and then her face broke into a playful grin. She gave me a goofy thumbs-up. โ€œYouโ€™re the best sis-in-law ever, Keira. Thanks!โ€

I accepted her gratitude with a calm smile. โ€œYouโ€™re welcome.โ€

But Yuna wasnโ€™t about to let it go. โ€œStill, you should call Hayden anyway.โ€

This stubborn girl. I bit back a sigh and scrambled for another excuse. โ€œYou just want to share the good news with him, huh? Donโ€™t botherโ€”I already told him.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not that,โ€ Yuna said, shaking her head, her tone softer now. โ€œI miss him. There are things I want to say to him.โ€

Her words hit me like a brick. I hesitated, searching for somethingโ€”anythingโ€”to say, but came up blank.

Yuna wasnโ€™t dumb. She frowned, her expression sharpening as she studied me like she was piecing something together. โ€œWhy donโ€™t you want to call him? Did something happen to Hayden?โ€

My heart lurched. I shook my head too quickly. โ€œNo, of course not.โ€

โ€œBut I havenโ€™t been able to reach him since Houston,โ€ she said, grabbing my arm in near-panic. She even dropped the admission letter sheโ€™d been holding so carefully. โ€œHaydenโ€™s in trouble, isnโ€™t he?โ€

Her fear was palpable, and for a moment, I froze. Just one wrong wordโ€”or even a nodโ€”and I was sure it would shatter her.

I scrambled for a way out, latching onto the only thing I could think of: his old profession. โ€œNo, Yuna, stop overthinking. Heโ€™sโ€ฆ heโ€™s been called in for another mission. Itโ€™s classified. He canโ€™t contact anyone outside.โ€

She frowned, unconvinced. โ€œBut Hayden retired, didnโ€™t he? Why would he be sent on another mission? Youโ€™re hiding something from me, arenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not,โ€ I said quickly, my voice steady but my eyes darting to the side.

โ€œThen call him!โ€ she shot back, practically cornering me.

I realized there was no point in arguing further, so I handed her my phone. โ€œLook, if you donโ€™t believe me, call him yourself. But Iโ€™m telling you, you wonโ€™t get throughโ€”heโ€™s on a mission, and his lineโ€™s cut off.โ€

Yuna just stared at the phone like it might bite her. She didnโ€™t try to dial, though. Guess some part of her knew I wasnโ€™t lyingโ€”at least about not being able to reach him. Instead, she mumbled under her breath, sounding more lost than anything. โ€œHe promised meโ€ฆ he said he wouldnโ€™t do anything dangerous again.โ€

โ€œThis is different,โ€ I said, trying to sound casual but also firm. โ€œTheyโ€™re dealing with a seriously bad guy. You saw what happened in Houstonโ€”he almost dragged you and Wade into it.โ€

Her eyes snapped back to mine. โ€œYouโ€™re really not lying to me?โ€ Yuna asked.

โ€œOf course not. Stop overthinking,โ€ I said, keeping my voice steady even though I couldnโ€™t quite meet her eyes.

For a second, her shoulders sagged, and her grip on my arm loosened. Her eyes flickered with worry and doubt, but I could see her tryingโ€”really tryingโ€”to believe me. Still, she wasnโ€™t fully buying it.

โ€œDonโ€™t stress, okay?โ€ I said gently. โ€œThe second Hayden reaches out, Iโ€™ll make sure he calls you.โ€

But she wasnโ€™t letting it go. Her gaze sharpened, a new determination settling in. โ€œIf Hayden doesnโ€™t contact me within a month, somethingโ€™s wrong. I know it.โ€

โ€œWhy would you even think that?โ€ I asked, honestly confused.

She picked up the crumpled admission letter, brushing it off with steady hands. Her voice was calm but unshakable. โ€œThe longest Haydenโ€™s ever gone without contacting me is seventy-one days. Itโ€™s already been forty-two.โ€

Yunaโ€™s bond with Hayden was undeniable. She wasnโ€™t the type to be fooledโ€”not when she was so closely tied to him.
