Chapter 638

I let out a screamโ€”not because I was scared, but because, well, why not? A car horn blared, and tires screeched as a car swerved into view. The door slammed open, and out stepped the guy Kylian had sent to tail me. His glare locked onto the wannabe kidnapper holding me. โ€œLet her go.โ€

โ€œWhy should I? Who even are you?โ€ My captorโ€™s voice cracked like a middle schoolerโ€™s. I bit my lip to keep from laughing.

Kylianโ€™s guy wasnโ€™t amused. โ€œIf you value your life, let her go,โ€ he said, dead serious.

The wannabe snorted. โ€œOh, tough guy, huh? Bring it!โ€ He puffed out his chest.

I rolled my eyes. This guy couldnโ€™t even act his way out of a TikTok skit, let alone a hostage situation.

Kylianโ€™s man took a step forward, and my โ€œkidnapperโ€ panicked. โ€œOne more step and Iโ€™llโ€”Iโ€™ll slit her throat!โ€

Slow applause echoed from behind us. Lena sauntered into view, clapping. โ€œWow. Five stars. Really thrilling stuff.โ€

The kidnapper dropped the act entirely. โ€œUhโ€ฆ Miss, did I scare you?โ€ he asked, grinning sheepishly.

Scare me? I almost doubled over laughing. Kylianโ€™s guy, still in hero mode, suddenly looked like heโ€™d been hit with a brick of realization.

Lena patted his shoulder. โ€œYouโ€™re quick on your feet, handsome. Kinda hot, honestly.โ€

โ€œUhโ€ฆ apologies. I didnโ€™t realizeโ€”this was my mistake.โ€

And just like that, he bolted.

โ€œThanks, cutie!โ€ I called after him with a cheeky wave.

Once he was gone, Lena turned to the โ€œkidnapper,โ€ dismissing him with a grin and a quick โ€œNice work.โ€

Yep, the whole thing had been a setupโ€”something Iโ€™d coordinated with Lena to test why Kylian had me followed.

Sliding into the passenger seat of my car, she gave me a look. โ€œSo, your little test worked. Spill. Whatโ€™s your theory?โ€

I glanced down at the ring on my finger. โ€œWhy is Kylian protecting me? Weโ€™ve got no history, no deals, nothing. It doesnโ€™t add up.โ€

โ€œYou think itโ€™s about Hayden?โ€

Trust Lena to cut right to the chase. Thatโ€™s exactly what I suspected. But how could Hayden have set this up when he wasnโ€™t alive anymore? Unlessโ€ฆ heโ€™d planned for this before he died.

โ€œYou donโ€™t think Hayden isโ€ฆ actually dead, do you?โ€

Her question hit a nerve. The thought had been haunting me for a while now.

I looked at her. โ€œWhat do you think? Could he still be alive?โ€

I laid it all outโ€”Yaraโ€™s odd behavior, the little details that didnโ€™t sit right, and the nagging feeling that there was more to the story than Iโ€™d been told.

Lena sighed. โ€œRea, youโ€™ve never been able to fully let him go, have you?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not about holding on,โ€ I snapped. โ€œItโ€™s about the facts. His cremation was rushedโ€”too rushed. And he was a registered organ donor. If he really died, why wasnโ€™t his body used for donation first? It doesnโ€™t make sense.โ€

That detail had hit me earlier today, on the way to the hospital, and I couldnโ€™t shake it.

โ€œYouโ€™ve got a point,โ€ Lena admitted. โ€œBut, Rea, you saw him get hurt. You saw his ashes.โ€

She sighed. โ€œMaybe you just canโ€™t face the truth. I mean, itโ€™s Hayden. I get it.โ€

I shook my head hard. โ€œIโ€™m not delusional. Iโ€”โ€

Okay, okay, Lena held up a hand to stop me. โ€œHear me out. Iโ€™ve got an idea. Youโ€™re not gonna like it, but itโ€™ll settle this once and for all.โ€

The bell on my bracelet jingled softly as I toyed with it. โ€œWhatโ€™s your plan?โ€

โ€œPromise you wonโ€™t get mad. And donโ€™t yell at me.โ€

I narrowed my eyes. โ€œJust spit it out, Lena.โ€

She pressed her lips and said, โ€œDig up Haydenโ€™s ashes and run a DNA test. Itโ€™s the only way to know for sure.โ€
